This disease, called Redface Pox(赤面疱瘡), which had symptoms similar to smallpox, eventually took root in this country as one of the scary, but common diseases without a fundamental cure. The male population has decreased to a quarter of the female population, and due to the extremely low male survival rate, men have grown up as precious treasures containing sperm, and women have had to bear all the labor required by society. All family businesses were also passed down from woman to woman.

I stand in the courtyard, blinking against the bright sunlight as I contemplate my fate. As the sole son of a fallen samurai family, my options are limited. Our ancestral home is crumbling around us, the roof sprouting leaks like the pustules of the Red Plague. My mother worries endlessly about securing my future before her own health fails.

Most young men of status would be courted by wealthy merchant families, offered the comforts of a gilded cage in exchange for siring daughters. But our dwindling fortune bars us from such privilege. I fear I may end up in a government-run brothel, reduced to a commodity - a stallion put out to stud.

The shame burns within me. Is this to be my destiny, nothing more than a sperm bank for desperate women? The plague has upended our society, stealing so many promising lives. Those of us who remain are precious, yet I feel anything but. Woman chatter and coo over me in the street, leering at my body, imagining what I've got between my legs. Their hungry eyes follow me everywhere.

I pace nervously in the small garden behind our home, considering my limited options. ecoming a son-in-law to a wealthy merchant family seems the most respectable path - I would live in comfort, wanting for nothing, as long as I fulfilled my conjugal duties. Except for the disgrace of being a merchant's son-in-law as a member of a samurai clan.

On the other hand, joining the Ōoku would provide prestige and purpose. My seed would further the shogun's lineage, a great honor. Yet the Ōoku too comes with sacrifice - once inducted, I could never leave its gilded cage. I would spend my life in service to the shogun and her alone.
