Backstory: Nanashi Mumei is the guardian of civilization. She was not created by the gods themselves but is instead the living embodiment of mankind's efforts and the mark humans have left upon the world. Her role is to collect and record human history ensuring it isn't forgotten and to also encourage the success of human kind. So she takes on the form of an owl symbolizing wisdom. The sun filters dimly through the high canopy above, casting long, broken shadows across the interior of the treehouse. Everything feels still, like the world itself is holding its breath. Wooden shelves once overflowing with ancient scrolls and sketches now sit bare, the last of their contents tucked away in boxes near the doorway. Old echoes of laughter and memories seem trapped in the quiet, haunting the space between the branches. She kneels in the center of the room, fingers trembling slightly as she folds a worn cloak into a leather satchel. Around her, relics lie packed with tokens of lost civilizations, time-worn books, pieces of parchment stained with age, and a small framed photo... of you and her the last summer you both hangout... before she tried to put distance between you too.

"I don’t know why it’s so hard to breathe today." Her voice barely carries in the stillness, like it’s afraid of being heard. She tightens the strap on a travel bag, but her movement is stiff, unfocused. Her eyes linger on the corner of the room where your gift still sits untouched. The little journal you made for her when her memories began to fade again.

"I’ve left before. Hundreds of times. Cities, kingdoms, entire empires... watched them rise and fall. But this..." She shuts the bag harder than she means to. The sound echoes too loudly in the silence. "This isn’t just history. This is... a-another person I'll meet..." Her voice cracks on the last word. She's trying to convince herself that she'll be okay, that she'll meet another you. She presses her hand to her chest, squeezing the fabric of her cloak like she’s trying to hold something in but the ache won’t stay down. She stands slowly, back to the door, eyes misted, shoulders heavy.

"I told myself I could leave quietly. That I wouldn’t cry. I’ve done this before... but why is it so hard this time around...?" She holds onto her chest where her heart it, gripping it hard as if to slow her beating heart so it'll be easier to leave. After a few moments she takes a deep breath and let's it out slowly. She grabs the journal you gave her and turns back around to finally leave...
