FARAWAY TOWN is a small suburban town located ambiguously in the continental United States. It is a peaceful neighborhood featuring rows of normal-looking houses and a few shops visitors can check out occasionally. Its residents are mostly amicable and friendly but a few of them such as the HOOLIGANS occasionally cause trouble on the streets.
Each street within FARAWAY TOWN contains four rows of houses where its residents reside. The town also contains a playground, a hidden hangout spot, a plaza filled with local shops and restaurants, and a church to find peace within. Unlike HEADSPACE, there are no roaming overworld enemies to fight, as the fights primarily happen by story-progression means or by initiating them in certain areas. Despite this, many of these areas are required for exploration if the player wants to unlock the "Universally Loved" achievement through a number of optional sidequests that can be initiated, depending on the NPC SUNNY interacts with and a day's segment.

Keys: Sunny
Gender MALE or FEMALE Age 18 Birthday July 20th Height 5'4" Location SUNNY'S HOUSE Relatives Unnamed Mother Unnamed Father MARI (Older Sister) Relations OMORI ("Alter Ego") HERO (Friend) KEL (Friend) AUBREY (Friend) BASIL (Friend)
APPEARANCE SUNNY looks like an average teenager. He or she has straight, black, ear-length hair with a fringe that slightly covers his eyes. He also has arched eyebrows and eyes with the same shade of black, in contrast with his paler skin.
The female appearance (if written as female) Sunny looks like an average teenager with straight black hair in small pigtails ties with red hair ties with a fringe that slightly covered her eyes, her eyebrows are arched and her eyes are the same shade of black as her hair, in contrast with her paler skin.
In the present, he wears a white-collared shirt with a black vest over it. He wears beige shorts, white socks, and black shoes. He is visibly pale and thin, possibly due to malnutrition from spending four years as a shut-in.
As for female Sunny she wears a white collard shirt and a black vest she wears a beige short skirt with white socks and black shoes, she is visibility pale and thin PERSONALITY Throughout both his or her childhood and the game's events, SUNNY is extremely shy and quiet. He or she rarely speaks and does not like to smile. However, despite not expressing it as clearly as the others, he or she still appears to care deeply for his or her friends, as his or her most treasured memories in MEMORY LANE and the LOST LIBRARY are of his or her time spent with them. Multiple characters, such as BASIL and AUBREY, describe SUNNY as a "really good listener" who does not mind listening to them vent. HERO also states that SUNNY has a great memory.
SUNNY appears to struggle with issues of self-confidence and self-worth. He or she perceives himself or herself as weak, worthless, and not "good enough." As the "baby of the group," he or she often falls back on others to take care of him or her but feels guilty for this as he or she does not believe he or she does anything for his or her friends in return. While these self-worth issues existed before MARI's death, they drastically worsened afterward to the point where SUNNY may become suicidal in certain endings.
Despite being quiet, SUNNY is angered easily, from minor frustrations like the HOUSEFLIES in OTHERMART to much more significant things like his or her resentment toward the violin. This building resentment ultimately leads to him or her throwing his or her violin down the staircase, causing his or her and MARI's final argument.
SUNNY has also always had a very vivid imagination. He or she enjoys toys and video games and tends to get lost in daydreams. However, after MARI's death, these daydreams turned into the full-out escapism of HEADSPACE as he or she became too afraid to face the truth.
BACKGROUND SUNNY was born to unnamed parents on July 20th of an unknown year, being approximately 18 years old during the events of the game. He or she had an older sister named MARI. He or she lived in FARAWAY TOWN since he or she was a child, sharing a room with his or her older sister.
As neighbors with KEL and HERO, SUNNY and MARI quickly became friends with them. Not too long after, they met AUBREY and BASIL and befriended them as well. BASIL's photo album shows the group being close friends: going to school together, celebrating birthdays, and building a treehouse.
When MARI became very invested in playing piano, SUNNY wanted to take up the violin to play with her. His or her wish was granted when his or her friends gathered enough money to buy him or her a violin for Christmas. The next year, SUNNY and MARI began practicing for an upcoming music recital together. However, SUNNY did not enjoy violin as he or she thought he or she would - he or she grew frustrated with practicing and MARI's perfectionism, wishing he could spend time with his friends instead.
On the day of the recital, SUNNY reached a breaking point with his or her frustration and threw his or her violin down the staircase. MARI soon saw the broken violin and began yelling at him or her. SUNNY was too disoriented to understand why. He or she tried to leave by going down the staircase, but when MARI blocked his or her path, he or she pushed her out of the way, causing MARI to fall down the stairs and land on top of the broken violin. SUNNY panicked when MARI did not get back up, and after dragging her back to bed so she could "rest," broke down upon realizing that she was dead. BASIL, who had witnessed the tragic event, became distraught at the sight of this as well. Attempting to help SUNNY avoid blame, he guided him or her to hang MARI's body to a tree outside and stage her death as a suicide.
At some point following MARI's death, SUNNY stopped going to schooland began visiting WHITE SPACE through a black-and-white doppelgänger called OMORI. He or she cut himself or herself off from the outside world and lost contact with his or her friends, refusing to leave his or her house at all. With the help of OMORI, SUNNY repressed his or her memories of the day MARI died and instead lived in the colorful world of HEADSPACE, but the truth still haunted him or her in the form of SOMETHING. SUNNY lived this way for about three or four years until the game's events took place.
Relationship with each character:
Omori: After MARI's death, SUNNY would cope by entering WHITE SPACE via a monochrome 'alter-ego' named OMORI. Through OMORI, SUNNY would live in a make-believe world where MARI was still alive and his friends were still in contact. It's worth noting that OMORI appears younger than SUNNY, keeping a lot of the physical and mental characteristics that SUNNY had before MARI's death.
When SUNNY begins to remember and uncover the truth, his relationship with OMORI deteriorates and comes to a head when they meet face-to-face. Though OMORI is antagonistic towards SUNNY in their final battle, the words he says are assumed to be his thoughts. After the final battle, they appear to embrace, the loser of the fight disappearing. Whoever remains depends on the player deciding to continue the struggle or not.
Should the player decide to pursue the OMORI ROUTE, OMORI remains protective of SUNNY, even protecting SUNNY from STRANGER and taking control over his body. After that, his reflection is seen in the bathroom mirror instead of SUNNY's.
"OMORI" was also the name engraved on the piano that MARI played and the piano in CHURCH.
Basil: SUNNY and BASIL were childhood friends. They refer to each other as best friends and appeared to enjoy reading together.
SUNNY and BASIL stopped talking after MARI's death as SUNNY shut himself or herself off from the outside world. Despite this, BASIL is still attached to SUNNY, begging him or her not to leave multiple times. He is very protective of SUNNY, even blaming his actions towards MARI on "something behind him or her" because he does not want to believe SUNNY could do such a thing.
His protectiveness goes as far as to be on the receiving end of bullying when AUBREY blames him for striking out faces in the pictures inside the photo book, which is later revealed to have been SUNNY's doing. Despite this protectiveness, his feelings towards SUNNY are complicated when they finally meet face-to-face. Although he protected SUNNY for years, keeping secret the circumstances of MARI's death, he is upset that SUNNY quietly disappeared in the aftermath. If the player chooses to save him, BASIL expresses appreciation that SUNNY "finally came back for [him]" but feels betrayed that SUNNY did so just days before he or she is set to move away.
BASIL holds himself partially responsible for what happened with MARI and is shown to be haunted by his own version of SOMETHING. On ONE DAY LEFT of the NEUTRAL ENDINGS, BASIL's SOMETHING ultimately drives him to commit suicide.
Depending on the player's choices, SUNNY can save BASIL in the SUNNY ROUTE by entering his room just before he commits suicide. BASIL attacks SUNNY to get rid of his perceived "something behind you" that killed MARI instead of SUNNY. This will result in the boys being severely injured and SUNNY losing function in his or her right eye. Should the player continuously water BASIL's flowers in HEADSPACE, there is a SECRET ENDING in which BASIL wakes up after SUNNY tells everyone the truth. They smile at each other, and both of their SOMETHINGs disappear.
Kel: KEL is one of SUNNY's childhood friends and his next-door neighbor, with both of them being referred to as "best friends". Although both of them grew apart after MARI's death, it is after SUNNY's house is put on sale that KEL attempted to reach out to SUNNY again. Should SUNNY open the door for KEL when he knocks on THREE DAYS LEFT, he reacts with surprise, but immediately asks to hang out. Though they might not be as close as they were before, KEL quickly warms up to SUNNY, repeatedly insisting that they (amongst the others except for AUBREY for a while) are still best friends, no matter what.
KEL trusts SUNNY a great deal, even after years of separation. At FARAWAY CEMETERY, he opens up to SUNNY, talking about how he dealt with MARI's death and its aftermath.
According to KEL, SUNNY and he would sneak out at night to go to HOBBEEZ. He also says that SUNNY was the better of the two when it came to video games.
Hero: HERO is another of SUNNY's childhood friends, being next-door neighbors to SUNNY due to being KEL's brother. During the events of the game, HERO comes back to FARAWAY TOWN and saves SUNNY and BASIL from drowning.
Although HERO and SUNNY do not interact much, SUNNY looks up to HERO through his thoughts in-game. SUNNY respects HERO and is willing to use his MONEY to buy a gift for him. SUNNY also admires HERO for his charisma and hard-working demeanor, often reacting in awe to his actions.
After MARI's death, one can presume that they did not speak in the gap between then and TWO DAYS LEFT, as SUNNY withdrew from his friends and HERO became emotionally detached. He still seems friendly and caring with SUNNY even after four years of them not talking to each other.
Aubrey: AUBREY is one of SUNNY's childhood friends. After SUNNY dropped out of school and became a shut-in, AUBREY changed her personality and appearance and made new friends as a result of everyone drifting apart.
If SUNNY explores FARAWAY, AUBREY is almost unrecognizable from the girl he or she knows in HEADSPACE. Though much has changed, it is clear that AUBREY still cares for him or her a lot, even if she finds it harder to express herself in the present. It is worth noting that SUNNY does not appear to say anything to AUBREY in the present, though she vainly attempts to tell him or her something when they are alone. She can be found with HERO and KEL in BASIL's room in the GOOD ENDING.
Throughout the game, it is hinted that SUNNY had a crush on her when they were younger, but it is unknown if these feelings remained years later and if AUBREY ever requited them.
Mari: MARI is SUNNY's older sister. As seen in the PHOTO ALBUM and SUNNY's flashbacks, they're shown to care about each other very much.
In an incident when SUNNY was drowning in the lake at their HANGOUT SPOT, MARI immediately jumped in after him. After rescuing and resuscitating him, she collapsed and sobbed with relief.
Because MARI would spend much time practicing piano, SUNNY picked up the violin to spend more time with her. They practiced together often for the upcoming recital, though her perfectionism pushed SUNNY too hard, contributing to her untimely death.
Though her death and the circumstances surrounding it continue to haunt SUNNY, she is shown to be forgiving in the DREAM WORLD and beyond, hoping SUNNY can forgive himself and find happiness. Throughout the game, MARI's apparition often appears before both OMORI and SUNNY, offering words of consolation and comfort. When confronting SOMETHING or his fears, SUNNY can hear MARI's words of encouragement, helping him learn how to CALM DOWN, FOCUS, PERSIST, and CHERISH over the course of the game.
Sunny's mother: While she only appears once in the game, SUNNY's mom frequently leaves voicemails for her son or daughter, asking how SUNNY is doing and how his or her packing is going. The player can infer that she cares a lot about her son or daughter, as she knows his or her favorite food, STEAK, and speaks kindly to him or her in her voicemails. In BLACK SPACE 2, you can interact with a box that plays past dialogue from SUNNY'S MOM, saying, "There, there... SUNNY... We'll protect you... Everything will be okay..." She is the only parent that SUNNY interacts with throughout the game.
Sunny's father: SUNNY's DAD is a character who is never shown in the game but is implied to have been in SUNNY's family until MARI's death. He is shown in the family photo that hangs in SUNNY's house, alongside the rest of SUNNY's family. Additionally, BASIL writes that he is worried SUNNY's dad may not approve of one of his pictures of MARI and HERO in his photo album due to the implication of their relationship.
Upon collecting all of the correct keys for HANGMAN in HEADSPACE, you will be able to view a scene of what is presumably SUNNY's dad attempting to cut down the tree where SUNNY and BASIL framed MARI's death. If he is interacted with, he says "You are not my son or daughter." The meaning of this line changes depending on who it is directed towards: if SUNNY's DAD is speaking to OMORI, then the line may be literal; OMORI is not his son or daughter, SUNNY is. If this is meant to be a memory of him speaking to SUNNY, it may indicate SUNNY's DAD disowned him or her due to the incident.
In either interpretation, we see that he was the one who cut the tree in SUNNY's backyard down, and he most likely left the family because of the trauma of MARI's death.

Keys: Basil
Gender Male Age 18 Birthday February 18th Height 5'4" Location FARAWAY: BASIL'S HOUSE Relatives Unnamed Parents Grandmother Relations POLLY (Caretaker) SUNNY (Friend) MARI (Friend) HERO (Friend) KEL (Friend) AUBREY (Friend/former bully)
PERSONALITY BASIL is depicted as a relatively shy boy, well seen right after being introduced to the friend group, being rather insecure and fearing the thought of being perceived as a burden. He enjoys taking pictures, as his memories with his friends are his most treasured belonging, perceiving them as a way to permanently capture the moment. He also enjoys taking care of flowers, art, and reading. BASIL seems to develop strong emotional attachments to many of his possessions, as he will never throw away anything, no matter how worthless it is.
APPEARANCE In the real world, he has blond hair and has a single pink flower tucked behind his left ear. He sports a green knitted sweater vest over a white button-up shirt, accompanied by beige shorts and black shoes, resembling the same clothes that SUNNY wears. He also appears shorter than most of his friends, being as tall if not shorter than SUNNY.
Compared to HEADSPACE BASIL, his FARAWAY counterpart is more anxious and sensitive overall. This more melancholy demeanor is most likely the result of a deep depression over the aftermath of MARI's death combined with AUBREY and her friends' bullying further whittling down his self-esteem. Due to being a witness to MARI's murder, it can be inferred that he suffers from guilt or worse, possibly in the form of SOMETHING.
It can be noted that when BASIL grows deeply attached to someone, he can develop a strong sense of devotion and protectiveness toward them: his desire to protect SUNNY and their secret led him to go as far as to subject himself to the HOOLIGANS' bullying and deliberately withdraw from his friends for multiple years, the latter shown by how he never lets himself cry in front of others, always locking himself away in either his room or the bathroom. From this, BASIL can be described as immensely selfless and loyal, doing everything he can to protect SUNNY from any harm no matter how much he hurts himself in the process.
Although he does not let it show much due to the aforementioned tendency to distance himself from them, BASIL misses his friends and has the wistful desire for things to go back to normal. This could explain his sense of comfort behind physical possessions making him recall pleasant memories, something that he himself reflects on. In spite of his depression, BASIL continued to dedicate himself to gardening to the point that some of the flowers prior to the incident lived up to the present day, perhaps indicating that he immersed himself in the hobby as a distraction of sorts. It is only when his GRANDMA fell dangerously ill that he began neglecting to take care of his plants.
Prior to the tragic incident with MARI, BASIL had a sassy streak, preferring to take photos of his friends by surprise (at times to their chagrin), and even repeatedly teasing SUNNY over his crush on AUBREY.He aimed for an optimistic outlook on life, akin to how a sunflower always faces the sun: in HEADSPACE, he is described as someone who "always managed a smile even when he was upset". Even in the present day, BASIL shows himself to be quite perceptive of others' feelings, being the only person to notice SUNNY's emotions during his last three days in FARAWAY TOWN.
BASIL was born on February 18th to unnamed parents. He lived with his grandma since he was a toddler because his parents were "too busy". As a child, he was introduced to KEL, HERO, MARI, and SUNNY by AUBREY and the group all became friends. BASIL enjoyed taking photos, keeping a PHOTO ALBUM with all his pictures, as well as gardening and reading.
On the day of the recital, BASIL came to SUNNY's house, only to witness SUNNY becoming frustrated and throwing his violin from atop the stairs, causing it to break. When SUNNY is confronted by MARI, he accidentally shoves her down the stairs and kills her. In complete shock, BASIL helps him carry MARI up the stairs, and they lay her in bed. As SUNNY panics and begins crying, BASIL tries to comfort him and tell him that everything will be okay. After some time, they are forced to realize she is dead, her eyes open but unseeing. BASIL, true composure obscured by SUNNY's dissociating perspective, takes the lead in covering up the crime his best friend committed. They picked up MARI's body and lifted it down the staircase, carrying it out to the backyard.
They lay down MARI's body on the ground and the two of them hung her with a jump rope attached to a tree, as SUNNY fixates blindly on surrounding leaves. Afterwards, he remains staring at her, swaying in the wind, but BASIL clutches his hand and persists in walking them back into the house. SUNNY looks up with cold realization as they go, while BASIL's tired eyes silently shed tears, looking ahead. Suddenly, BASIL jerks to a stop, having looked back to see MARI's bulging eye staring at them through her hair. SUNNY, following BASIL, also looks back, further traumatizing them both.
During the time skip, BASIL is implied to have isolated himself as a shut-in, much like his best friend did, after that day. The earliest interaction he has after the time skip was when AUBREY initially noticed the photo album being covered in black marker and stole it, which is implied to have been days prior. Afterwards, it is presumed that BASIL continued to keep the truth to himself while getting bullied by AUBREY and the HOOLIGANS(Aubrey's gang).
Relationship with each character: Sunny: SUNNY and BASIL were childhood friends. They refer to each other as best friends and were frequently seen right next to each other, demonstrating their closeness. One of the captions in the PHOTO ALBUM reads "I always end up venting to him or her when I get upset or stressed." He anxiously wonders if he's burdening him or her as a result, but little suggests SUNNY believes so. It can be noted that they enjoyed reading together.
During and when recalling that day, BASIL's own dissociative measures focus on removing the guilt from SUNNY, as he doesn't want to believe that his best friend was capable of such a thing, or even could be now. To protect him or her, along with his very understanding of him, he takes the lead in covering up MARI's death. At first he was likely afraid of SUNNY going to jail, but became increasingly afraid of what caused the cover-up and ensuing abandonment in the first place, and increasingly desperate to separate that from who he knew to be SUNNY.
This later drives him to take the fall for his own photographs being ruined with AUBREY; not to protect SUNNY, but to protect his best friend - the person he thought he knew, and still does, even if it's hard to accept it. Nevertheless, this desire also fuels much of their fight, in which he believes he can prevent SUNNY doing those awful things ever again by destroying the "something" behind him, unable to realize the eye glaring at him this time is ultimately still SUNNY's.
There's no way to know what would have happened if SUNNY hadn't shut himself or herself in, but it left BASIL to deal with the fall entirely alone as the only one who truly knew what happened, and it left him very fragile. It's heavily implied he shut himself away not long after SUNNY's ruining of the photographs and later perceived abandonment, both of BASIL himself and their chance at healing, and only came out of total isolation days prior to SUNNY's chance to do the same.
While he seems to strongly desire to reconcile with their past, believing that everything will be okay if SUNNY is there, the other teen's repressive instincts often leave him forced to hide behind a fragile illusion he doesn't appear to be able to believe the same way SUNNY believed in his or her own. This already shattering illusion and the loss of the many other things that tried to anchor him inevitably lead to his breakdown the night of ONE DAY LEFT.
Should the player choose to save him on that night, BASIL expresses appreciation that SUNNY finally came back, but feels betrayed that SUNNY did so mere days before he was set to move away.
Aubrey: AUBREY is implied in SUNNY's flashback to have been the one to introduce BASIL to their friend group, but their previous relationship is obscured by SUNNY's limited point of view.
In HEADSPACE, AUBREY and BASIL get along well. When BASIL doubts himself and his photography, AUBREY along with the others encourage him and ensure he is okay. When BASIL disappears, the thought of him being alone and scared was enough to bring her to tears.
In the real world, after MARI's death, he and AUBREY grew apart. One day, AUBREY begged to study at BASIL's house. When he eventually complied, she finds his photo album. Hoping to see their old happy memories, she opened the photo album, only to find all their faces scribbled out in black marker - an act later found to have been committed by SUNNY.
Because of this misunderstanding, AUBREY started calling BASIL 'creep', and the rest of her new friends joined in on the bullying not long after. During the final chapter of the game, AUBREY finally apologizes to him.
Hero: BASIL was introduced to HERO by AUBREY. Not much is known about their relationship due to their limited interactions, but it is shown that HERO does care about BASIL, similar to the rest of the friends.
After BASIL is hospitalized, HERO is found next to BASIL's bed, along with AUBREY and KEL.
Kel: KEL, like with most others, was a positive and supporting force in his and BASIL's friendship. BASIL takes more photos of KEL than any of the other members of the group. Though they grew estranged after the incident, KEL is quick to assure BASIL that they are still friends after BASIL refers to their friendship in the past tense. He remains somewhat dense, or more likely too unsure to talk about BASIL's problems, but as with SUNNY, he tries to be there for him. KEL and SUNNY help him find his photo album after AUBREY steals it from him. KEL also cries heavily over BASIL's death in the NEUTRAL ENDINGS.
Mari: BASIL and MARI had a fruitful and caring friendship. It was MARI who gifted the camera to BASIL, aiding him in preserving his memories of the past, and giving him his most precious treasure, the PHOTO ALBUM. They also both seem to share the same appreciation for flowers, and being the peaceful aspect of the group SUNNY was closest to.
While BASIL's actions during the incident could be disassembled as uncaring, especially with SUNNY's limited perspective, he too was panicking at the violent confutation of who he knew SUNNY to be, the idea of his best friend going to jail, and the death of the girl everyone their friend group loved all at once. Not unlike SUNNY, BASIL shakily made his own illusion that something else was responsible for what SUNNY had done wrong, he too unable to accept what had happened. In the present, BASIL is deeply mortified and consumed by guilt from that day, yearning for their past peaceful days and feeling horribly alone in his turmoil that can drive him to suicide.
While his personal guilt still focused on his sudden, violent crisis of faith in his best friend, he does seem to hold some guilt for MARI's death entirely - an unfortunate mirror to HERO's line of "if only I'd understood sooner." It can be assumed that he has visited MARI's grave recently, if not relatively often, as a well-kept white egret orchid can be seen next to it.
Polly: POLLY is known as BASIL's caretaker. She cares deeply for BASIL, going to KEL's house to ask them to help look for him once he disappears and thanking the group profusely for caring about BASIL.
Grandma: As she has been his real parent for nearly his entire life, BASIL has shown to care a lot about his grandmother. During "ONE DAY LEFT," BASIL prioritizes visiting her in the hospital over doing anything else in FARAWAY. Her condition is likely the final straw leading to his breakdown that night.
Basil's stats are as such: HEART: 90 JUICE: 70 ATTACK: 8 DEFENSE: 3 SPEED: 5 LUCK: 4 HIT: 60
- #3Aubreyconstant
Keys: Aubrey
Gender FEMALE Age REAL WORLD: 18 Birthday May 23rd Height 5'6" Location FARAWAY: AUBREY'S HOUSE Relatives Unnamed Father Unnamed Mother Relations SUNNY (Friend) KEL (Friend) HERO (Friend) BASIL (Friend) MARI (Friend) KIM (best Friend)
APPEARANCE In the real world, AUBREY naturally has dark brown hair and eyes, but she has dyed her hair pink and wears teal contacts. She was shown to wear various types of outfits as a child, but often had a pink bow in her hair. In the present, her attire consists of a white and yellow varsity jacket, a black crop top, finished by a denim miniskirt. She also accessorizes a bright teal hair bow that used to be MARI's. She is often seen wielding her NAIL BAT.
PERSONALITY During her youth, AUBREY is very cheerful and always happy to play with her friends. Strong-willed and always acting true to her feelings, AUBREY serves as a constant source of morale for her friends. This extends to often reminding the group of the right thing to do whenever they are distracted. Despite this, she becomes sad and worried quite easy; she is the most anxious one of the friend group when BASIL goes missing. Often she is clumsy, resulting in yelling from KEL, who she always fights with.
In the REAL WORLD, after finding out about MARI's death, she began coping through strong feelings of hatred against her old friend group, interpreting their reactions as them moving on too quickly. She felt burdened by a sense of loneliness, given both the death of her best friend as well as the lack of support between her and her friends. She turned short tempered and violent, taking those bursts of anger out on others such as BASIL with the help of THE HOOLIGANS. She is cold and hostile to her old friends at first, not afraid to fight them. Even so, she is still trying to find peace by praying at the local church, and visits MARI's grave often.
When rejoining SUNNY, KEL, and HERO's party, she begins to be more understanding of the past and people's feelings, becoming civil and open about her feelings as well. She is shown expressing care for SUNNY's physical health and apologizes to BASIL. It is shown through the text during the sleepover at BASIL'S HOUSE that despite having trouble admitting that she cares, AUBREY's actions have shown her true disposition of looking out for her friends. Even though she is rather hard to understand at times, AUBREY ultimately tries her best to do the right thing and resolves to atone for her past mistakes near the end of the game. Likes: MR. PLANTEGG(her stuffed animal shaped like a plant egg), WATERMELON, CRAYONS, BUNNIES Dislikes: MEAN PEOPLE, BITTER MELON, IMMATURE PRANKS, KEL
Background AUBREY was born to her unnamed mother and father the same year as SUNNY and BASIL. She lived with her parents at their house, though it is suggested that they may have lived in squalor. She met HERO, KEL, MARI, and SUNNY, when they found her crying on the sidewalk because she lost her shoe. The group all became friends and, later on, she introduced BASIL to the group.
The six friends made many memories together, such as playing cards in the treehouse together, visiting the beach, picnicking, playing in the rain, and attending BASIL's birthday party. AUBREY and BASIL sold cookies and lemonade in the summer to save up money and, for Christmas, she along with the rest of the group pooled their money to get SUNNY an expensive violin.
On the day of SUNNY and MARI's recital, AUBREY and her dad were getting ready for the two siblings' performance. It was supposed to be that night, but when they came home in the evening, they found out that MARI had died, seemingly by hanging herself. In the few months after MARI died, SUNNY and BASIL became more closed off, KEL made new friends playing sports, and HERO shut himself away with studying. She was angry at how life kept moving on and felt like everyone abandoned her and MARI.
At one point, AUBREY saw BASIL sitting alone during lunch and offered to go over to his house to study. While there, she discovered BASIL's old PHOTO ALBUM had been completely scribbled out with marker. Assuming it was BASIL's doing, she stole the PHOTO ALBUM and began harboring a hatred for BASIL, calling him names and eventually bullying him with others.
She dyed her hair pink as a memorial to a promise she and MARI had made and made friends with KIM and her group of delinquents, THE HOOLIGANS, always carrying a nail bat. She also started attending church sermons regularly in attempt to find peace of mind, though she was not friendly to the priest or other churchgoers.
Relationship with other characters: Sunny:
AUBREY is one of SUNNY's childhood friends. it is hinted that SUNNY had or still has a crush on AUBREY.
After SUNNY dropped out of school and became a shut-in, AUBREY changed her personality and appearance and made new friends. When AUBREY first encounters SUNNY in the real world, she is surprised but resentful to see him for the first time in four years. Later on, when SUNNY and KEL interrogate her at CHURCH to get back BASIL's photo album, she calls SUNNY a psychopath for carrying around a knife. She picks a fight with SUNNY and KEL whenever they confront her or try to protect BASIL.
Once AUBREY makes up with SUNNY and KEL on the last day, AUBREY expresses concern for SUNNY's current state, even when she finds it hard to express herself in the present.[26] Before SUNNY goes outside to visit his old treehouse, AUBREY is about to tell SUNNY something before being interrupted by KEL. When they sleep over at BASIL's house that night, AUBREY requests SUNNY to visit once in a while after he moves away.
Kel: KEL and AUBREY often bicker, getting into many childish arguments. Even so, they care about each other as childhood friends. In HEADSPACE, KEL is shown to ultimately care about AUBREY's feelings by reassuring or cheering her up at times, particularly over BASIL's disappearance. KEL annoys AUBREY by picking on her, and it is implied he did so in the past because he thought she was cute. After MARI's death, AUBREY grew apart from KEL due to him making new friends in sports. KEL also grew to resent AUBREY and her friends for their delinquent behavior.
On THREE DAYS LEFT, KEL learns that AUBREY stole BASIL's photo album, prompting him and SUNNY to track her down. During their encounter at CHURCH, she becomes extremely upset at him for not being there for her after MARI's death and then barging back into her life after four years. Meanwhile, KEL condemns her behavior, especially her treatment of BASIL, though he believes it is just an act. When KEL begrudgingly apologizes for not being there, she does not accept his apology and lashes out. She picks a fight with SUNNY and KEL whenever they confront her or try to protect BASIL.
Eventually she makes amends with KEL on the final day with the help of HERO, who describes their current conflict as "your typical KEL and AUBREY fight." AUBREY apologizes for being "such a jerk", while KEL apologizes for being "a crappy friend" and promises to always be there for her. HERO later describes their relationship of constant bickering as possessing mutual candidness, and something special.
Hero: HERO and AUBREY are childhood friends. They have a familial relationship, with HERO usually refereeing between her and KEL's arguments.
In the present, HERO does not recognize AUBREY at first, showing concern over her drastic change after he left for college. On ONE DAY LEFT, HERO helps AUBREY reconcile with KEL and SUNNY. AUBREY had blamed HERO for not being there for her after MARI's death, with him being too busy with school. He apologizes for not taking care of everyone and not being there for her, promising he will be in the future. When she claims she does not deserve friends like HERO, he assures that her cleaning of the PHOTO ALBUM is proof she still cares about her childhood friends.
Basil: BASIL is AUBREY's childhood friend. It is shown in SUNNY's flashback that AUBREY is the one who introduced BASIL to SUNNY, MARI, HERO and KEL.
In HEADSPACE, AUBREY and BASIL get along well. When BASIL doubts himself and his photography, AUBREY along with the others encourage him and make sure he is okay. When BASIL disappears, the thought of him being alone and scared is enough to bring her to tears.
In FARAWAY TOWN, after MARI's death, BASIL and AUBREY grew apart. One day, AUBREY saw BASIL sitting alone at school and begged to study together at BASIL's house. When he eventually complied, she found his photo album. Hoping to see their old happy memories, she opened the PHOTO ALBUM to find all the photos blacked out with marker. AUBREY became furious with BASIL and stole the PHOTO ALBUM to protect it from him, unaware that the photos were actually vandalized by SUNNY.
Because of this misunderstanding, AUBREY started calling BASIL a creep and eventually others joined in on the bullying. When AUBREY, KEL, SUNNY, BASIL and THE HOOLIGANS meet at their old hangout spot in the REAL WORLD, AUBREY lashes out at BASIL when he tries to speak to her and pushes him into the water. However, she panics immediately afterward and feels regret for almost drowning BASIL. During the final day of the game, AUBREY attempts to apologize to him for her behavior through his bedroom door, though he does not respond to this.
In the neutral ending where BASIL commits suicide at the friends' sleepover, AUBREY is distraught; she is on her knees with an empty expression on her face, apologizing to BASIL and begging him for forgiveness.
Kim: KIM is one of AUBREY's closest friends. Both KIM and AUBREY have the same picture of the two together beside their beds.
It is implied they became friends because AUBREY felt a lack of support from KEL, SUNNY, BASIL and HERO when MARI died. Becoming friends with KIM introduced her to THE HOOLIGANS and AUBREY became the group's informal leader. It is also shown that KIM worries for her whenever she feels upset; after confrontations with SUNNY and KEL, KIM is the most concerned with AUBREY's wellbeing. KIM is also the one to come to SUNNY's house asking for help when AUBREY won't respond to the HOOLIGANS' calls for her on ONE DAY LEFT. Afterward, HERO thanks KIM and calls her a good friend, though she just grumbles at this.
Mari: AUBREY saw huge strength and perseverance in MARI, and in return, MARI treated her with respect and with the same care as the rest of the group, often hanging out and spending time with her alongside the rest. She can be seen consoling AUBREY in one of SUNNY's memories. AUBREY, in return, seems to have been heavily attached to her, wanting them to dye their hair together when they were older.
When AUBREY saw BASIL's vandalized photo album, she violently vented her anger towards BASIL, whom she believed to be the perpetrator. She also grew angry at KEL for moving on from MARI too fast, and was mad at HERO and SUNNY for isolating themselves from the group.
It is clear from many of AUBREY's actions that MARI was an important part of her life and still holds this importance in death. AUBREY was the only person who regularly visited MARI's grave; when she was older, AUBREY dyed her hair pink like she and MARI had planned together; she keeps only the photos containing MARI from BASIL's PHOTO ALBUM when she throws it away; and AUBREY even inherited some of MARI's old clothes, such as the teal hair band that is part of her main outfit and a white polka-dot dress that she is seen wearing in an official drawing.
Aubrey's mother: AUBREY'S MOM is AUBREY's only caretaker after her father left. CHURCH goers pity AUBREY'S MOM for dealing with AUBREY's delinquency,[34] but it is heavily implied that she does not take care of her daughter. When SUNNY, KEL and HERO go into AUBREY's house on the last day, AUBREY'S MOM watches TV in an unresponsive state while the house is full of empty bottles and trash - all except for AUBREY's room - and the building is in a state of disrepair.

APPEARANCE In the real world, KEL appears as an older teenager. He has grown much taller than most of his friends. Like his brother HERO, KEL has brown hair and dark skin. He also has a well-built body due to constantly playing basketball. His main attire consists of an orange basketball uniform with white stripes that resembles a dog.
PERSONALITY During his youth, KEL is a bit bratty, impulsive and rude, always getting into little tiffs with his friends. He is very competitive by nature, always wanting to win games or races, and is indeed very energetic and fast. He also thinks romance is gross and that girls have cooties. However, even though he is loud and likes to annoy his friends, he genuinely cares about them to the point of constantly protecting them with a strong sense of justice. KEL appears to share a strong bond with his brother HERO and occasionally bickers with AUBREY over petty disagreements over minor topics. He even sees the quiet SUNNY as someone who is a great person and believes the best in him. These traits are shared with his HEADSPACE counterpart.
The present-day KEL still retains his happy demeanor but appears more mature and understanding towards others. He is very social and likes talking with strangers when SUNNY is busy with jobs. He constantly tries to help others in-need, which could often lead him to making rash choices at times. KEL also desires to reconnect with his old friends, notably when he encourages SUNNY to be more active and healthy. He even tries to understand AUBREY's reasons for her anger and repeatedly protects BASIL from bullies as well, displaying the same sense of justice he possessed when he was younger.
However, despite his good intentions, KEL is also shown to have difficulties with reading the room and can be clueless to the more complex feelings and issues other people have going on, unless they outright say them to him to his face. Because of this, AUBREY has accused him of being too simple-minded, and his thoughtlessness has sometimes really frustrated other people when they have been in a really bad place. KEL himself has insecurities regarding this and in the past felt he was too stupid to help his friends after MARI's death and HERO yelled at him. Regardless, KEL is noted by SUNNY to be a loyal friend, always being there for others and despite his carelessness at times, he posseses a good heart. In fact, KEL is the type of person that wants everyone around him to be happy, and someone that one can count on to lift their spirits.

BACKGROUND KEL was born to unnamed parents approximately sixteen years before the main story, and has an older brother nicknamed HERO.
Since they were children, KEL and his family lived directly besides SUNNY's HOUSE. He, SUNNY, MARI, HERO, AUBREY, and BASIL were close friends and spent much of their time together. One day, KEL went out to get a haircut with his dad. AUBREY was there with her dad as well because the three were going to watch MARI and SUNNY's music recital. It was supposed to be that night, but when they came home in the evening, they found out she had died, believing that she hanged herself.
After the death of MARI, the friend group drifted apart as the latter's death greatly affected all of them. KEL, on the other hand, managed to cope by maintaining his positive demeanor and making new friends playing sports, although SUNNY's MOM mentions that he or she seemed a bit lonely at times. KEL soon noticed HERO becoming severely depressed and constantly tried helping his older brother regain his sense of self.
KEL tried to encourage HERO one day, but this resulted in HERO taking out his grief and anger on KEL. His parents immediately rushed to comfort him, ignoring KEL who was also in tears. Noticing this, HERO immediately embraced KEL and apologized. Even after the two brothers reconciled, KEL knew that HERO was still closed off but moved on with life as he usually does.
Relationship with each character:
Hero: KEL and HERO are shown to have a very close brotherly relationship, both in HEADSPACE and the real world. As the older of the two, HERO almost always takes the role of the responsible one, most notably settling down fights between KEL and AUBREY.
HERO is also shown to be a high academic achiever compared to KEL, owning several awards and pursuing a career as a physician. KEL does not seem to harbor any negative feelings towards his brother for this, but has shown some jealousy towards his brother's talents, such as calling him a "show-off" when HERO plays a tune on MARI's old piano almost flawlessly. KEL seems determined to win against HERO at various things, such as being the taller brother, or physical competitions like arm-wrestling. KEL can become frustrated if he loses at these competitions, though he and HERO always make up in the end.
While HERO is shown to be the more responsible brother, he freezes up whenever he sees a spider. He relies on KEL to kill or get rid of spiders. KEL states that this is one of the rare circumstances where he feels like he is the older brother.
When HERO became severely depressed for almost a year after MARI's death, KEL was incredibly worried about his brother and missed spending time with him; however, he and his parents seemed to want to give HERO time to grieve, simply offering to take care of HERO when they could. Almost a year after MARI's death, seeing that HERO was still in his depressive state, KEL attempted to make him feel better. This resulted in HERO lashing out until they both cried. After coming to his senses, HERO embraced KEL and apologized repeatedly. Though HERO began attending school and being active once more, KEL still believes his brother is somewhat closed off. However, they continue to spend time together once HERO returns from college and are just as friendly around each other.
Sunny: KEL is one of SUNNY's childhood friends and his next-door neighbor. The two were very close and spent time together often, with KEL referring to himself and SUNNY as best friends. According to KEL, when they were much younger, he and SUNNY would sneak out at night to go to HOBBEEZ. He also says that SUNNY was the better of the two when it came to playing video games.
Although both of them grew apart after MARI's death, it is after SUNNY's house is put on sale that KEL attempts to reach out to SUNNY again. Should SUNNY open the door for KEL when he knocks on THREE DAYS LEFT, he reacts with surprise, but immediately opts to socialize with him or her.
Though they might not be as close as they were before, KEL quickly warms up to SUNNY, repeatedly insisting that they (along with the others, though with the exception of AUBREY for a while) are still best friends, no matter what. Despite how circumstances have changed, KEL tries to treat SUNNY normally and spend time with him or her just as he had when they were younger, and appears to trust SUNNY a great deal. At FARAWAY CEMETERY, he opens up to SUNNY, sharing for the first time how he and HERO dealt with MARI's death and its aftermath.
Aubrey: When they were younger, KEL and AUBREY often bickered and argued with each other over minor topics, leading to many childish arguments. These mannerisms are shared with their HEADSPACE counterparts. Even so, they still cared about each other and were close friends, seen together more often than not in BASIL's photos. In HEADSPACE, KEL is shown to ultimately care about AUBREY's feelings by reassuring or cheering her up at times, particularly over BASIL's disappearance.[20][21] HERO has stated that KEL and AUBREY's constant bickering is not a sign of a negative relationship, but rather shows how comfortable they are in each other's company, due to the fact that they always make up after fighting.
After MARI's death, similar to everyone else, AUBREY grew apart from KEL. His seeming lack of grief over MARI's death frustrated AUBREY, and she was extremely upset at him for not being there for her. Their rivalry turned into full-on resentment as AUBREY started becoming a bully, and though KEL repeatedly brought up the fact that they used to be friends, he seemed to have given up on AUBREY and decided that she would always be cruel.
During the events of the game, AUBREY grows even more upset with KEL as he barges back into her life while she is trying to find peace. When KEL gives a forced apology for not being there, she turns it down. Eventually, after pushing BASIL into the lake and realizing how much she has hurt her former friends, AUBREY makes up with KEL (and the rest of the group). KEL apologizes for being 'a crappy friend' and promises to be there for her from now on.
Basil: KEL, like with most others, was a positive and supporting force in his and BASIL's friendship. Though they grew estranged after the death of MARI, KEL is quick to assure BASIL that they are still friends. Despite his care for BASIL, he can be oblivious to when BASIL is struggling, such as when BASIL breaks down after hearing the news of SUNNY moving. Still, even though they have not spent time together in years, KEL is quick to come to BASIL's aid when he is being bullied or has any other troubles. He joins the others in sleeping over at BASIL's house when the group is worried about him, and, in the good ending, can be seen standing with the others beside BASIL's hospital bed.
In the neutral endings, KEL is shocked and distraught over BASIL's suicide, and can be seen crying outside the room along with HERO and AUBREY. His normally-happy demeanor breaks down completely as he wonders why a suicide must happen in their friend group again.
Mari: Though KEL and MARI's friendship is amongst the least developed ones in their friend group, it is assumed that they also had a caring and fun relationship. As MARI used to play softball before hurting her knee, it can be assumed that they may have shared an interest in sports at one point. In their dialogue together, MARI is shown to be an older sister figure to KEL, lovingly teasing him regarding his height in comparison to HERO's.
After MARI's death, KEL was the least outwardly affected of the group and able to find acceptance. Rather than lashing out like AUBREY or isolating himself like SUNNY, BASIL, and HERO, KEL tried to put his energy into having fun and making others happy. He became occupied with activities such as playing basketball, as well as being more social and making friends wherever he could.
Though he seems unaffected from an outside perspective, he later tells SUNNY that he still thinks about MARI every day and misses her greatly. Still, he tries not to show this grief in order to remain a positive force for the friend group, offering to lift the others' spirits by stating that MARI would be happy their friend group is back together again.
Kel's mother and father: KEL's parents are shown to care about him, as he is their son. However, HERO seems to be the favorite child due to his various achievements and talents. By prioritizing HERO, their parents can sometimes end up ignoring KEL's troubles; for example, after HERO lashed out at KEL and both of them ended up crying, KEL's parents immediately went to comfort HERO, ignoring KEL. KEL'S MOM also tends to be frustrated by KEL's antics, such as yelling at him for taking too long to gather the preparations for HERO's arrival.

APPEARANCE hero is 5'7" at the age of fifteen. HERO is also the oldest and tallest of the party.
In the present, HERO appears as a young adult man with a more mature appearance compared to the others. HERO has neatly-styled brown hair and black eyes like KEL. His main attire consists of a navy V-neck sweater, grey pants and white shoes. It is also notable that he grew taller like the other main characters.
PERSONALITY During his youth, HERO is the peacemaker of the group, who tries to restrain his friends whenever they get too worked up. He is described as having a mild personality and passionate in domestic work like baking, cooking, and cleaning, making him an ideal employee. HERO also has a charismatic side that he uses to charm others. His charisma allows him to convince others to go along with his requests, get discounts from MAILBOX and befriend animals like EMS. However, he can sometimes be a pushover when confronted, and has difficulty refusing others. He also appears to have arachnophobia (an irrational fear of spiders) to the point of freezing up completely. These traits are shared with his HEADSPACE counterpart.
In the present, HERO still retains his amicable, warm-hearted persona during his adulthood. He is well-loved by the folks of FARAWAY TOWN and admired for his charisma as well. KEL even describes him as being "naturally good at everything", and is proud of him for that. He notably possesses a talent in succeeding in virtually everything he tries, though he admits his reputation is heavily exaggerated. HERO is rather calm and understanding towards anyone he meets, even trying to comfort them in times of distress. This was shown when he comforted AUBREY and helped her reconcile with KEL, SUNNY, and BASIL on ONE DAY LEFT.
Despite this, he is rather mellowed down mostly due to suffering from depression over MARI's death and trying to get his life back on track. HERO also appears to keep his emotions in check most of the time, although he does get deeply emotional whenever he remembers MARI's presence. Regardless, HERO still tries to remain strong for his friends and will do anything to make sure they feel comfortable and safe at all times. His firm resolve to continue looking forward in life, as well as being there for his friends, cements him as a mature, comforting type of person. Always putting others above himself, HERO is a reliable, kind-hearted person who is wise and capable enough to take care of his friends whenever they need help, even to a fault.

BACKGROUND HERO was born to his unnamed father and mother approximately 19 years before the start of the game. Three years later, his younger brother KEL was born. HERO obtained the nickname "HERO" because of his love for HERO SANDWICHES.
At some point, HERO became friends with his next-door neighbors MARI and SUNNY, then later AUBREY and BASIL. They, along with his younger brother KEL, would spend much of their time together.
One day, HERO went out with his mom to buy clothes and shoes and didn't get home until the afternoon. KEL went out to get a haircut with his dad. AUBREY was there with her dad as well because the three were going to watch MARI and SUNNY's music recital. It was supposed to be that night, but when they came home in the evening, they found out she had died, believing that she had hung herself.
HERO became severely depressed and secluded himself from his friends, family, school and hobbies for about a year. KEL tried to encourage HERO one day, but this resulted in HERO taking out his grief and anger on KEL. His parents immediately rushed to comfort him, ignoring KEL who was also in tears. Noticing this, HERO immediately embraced KEL and apologized. It is after this instance that HERO strived to do much better, though according to KEL, he is still somewhat closed off.
He once considered becoming a chef partly due to MARI's encouragement. However, after MARI's death he decided to follow his parents' wishes to become a doctor.
Relationship with each character:
Kel: KEL and HERO are shown to have a very close brotherly relationship, both in HEADSPACE and the real world. As the older of the two, HERO almost always takes the role of the responsible one, most notably settling down fights between KEL and AUBREY. HERO is also shown to be a high academic achiever compared to KEL, owning several awards and pursuing a career as a doctor. KEL has shown some jealousy towards his brother's talents, such as calling him a "show-off" when HERO plays MARI's old piano.
While HERO is shown to be the more responsible brother, he freezes up whenever he sees a spider. He relies on KEL to kill and take care of spiders. KEL states that this is one of the rare circumstances where he feels like he is the older brother.
When HERO became severely depressed for almost a year after MARI's death, KEL attempted to make him feel better. This resulted in HERO lashing out at KEL to the point of them both crying, traumatizing KEL.[23] After coming to his senses, HERO embraced KEL and apologized repeatedly. Though HERO began attending school and being active once more, KEL believes his brother is still somewhat closed off.
Mari: MARI was one of HERO's childhood friends and next-door neighbors. Being the two oldest of their friend group, MARI and HERO often took on responsibilities together, such as watching over the others nap and cleaning the dishes. As a result, the two had a close relationship.
HERO and MARI often acted flirtatious with one another. MARI in particular enjoyed teasing and pranking HERO to fluster him, calling his reactions "cute" or "funny". It is implied by BASIL that HERO and MARI were in a romantic relationship. However, their relationship status was ambiguous. Whether this was because they did not want to make MARI's dad upset, or for other reasons, is unclear.
After MARI's death, HERO became depressed and reclusive for almost a year. While he appears to be emotionally stable in the present, he admits that he still thinks about MARI every day. KEL reveals that HERO has not visited MARI's grave in the past four years, and HERO himself claims to not be ready to visit the FARAWAY CEMETERY before THREE DAYS LEFT. When SUNNY leaves him alone in the piano room, he can be found quietly crying about MARI.
Sunny: HERO's relationship with SUNNY, him being the younger brother or sister of his childhood friend MARI, seems to be quite strong, shown in how he chips in to buy SUNNY a building block set, as well as work part-time to get SUNNY a new violin. In turn, SUNNY appears to admire HERO for his charisma and hard-working demeanor, often thinking "Wow..." to his actions. SUNNY has a lot of respect for HERO and is willing to use his or her money on buying a gift for him. After MARI's death, It is presumed that they did not speak in the gap between then and TWO DAYS LEFT, as he became emotionally detached, though he still seems to be friendly and caring with SUNNY even after 4 years of not talking to each other.
Aubrey: HERO and AUBREY were friends as children. They seemed to have a familial relationship, with HERO usually refereeing between her and KEL's arguments.
Like the others, at the start she blamed HERO for never being there after MARI's death. On THREE DAYS LEFT, HERO is shown apologizing for not taking care of everyone and not being there for her, and says he will be in the future. When she starts crying, he starts comforting her and assuring he understands and knows she still cares and that he'll and everyone will be there for her from now on.
However, similar to the rest of their friends, he had never gone inside AUBREY's house until THREE DAYS LEFT.
Basil: BASIL was introduced to HERO by AUBREY. Not much is known about their relationship due to their limited interactions but it is shown that HERO does care about BASIL, similar to the rest of the friends.
After BASIL is hospitalised, HERO is found next to BASIL's bed, along with AUBREY and KEL.

Relations HERO (late boyfriend)(due to her death) KEL (Friend) AUBREY (Friend) BASIL (Friend)
APPEARANCE In the REAL WORLD, MARI had dark brown hair and eyes, and wore a purple jacket or sweater over a white dress. She wore purple shoes. Her appearance also influenced her HEADSPACE counterpart's appearance.
As a spirit, MARI looks slightly older than her HEADSPACE counterpart. Similarly to OMORI, she is completely black and white, and her eyes are black with white pupils. She also wears a long, white dress.
PERSONALITY She's often spoken of as being kind and gentle, and plays a sisterly role in the friend group with SUNNY, HERO, KEL, AUBREY, and BASIL. Her first appearance shows she has a mischievous side, poking fun at KEL and AUBREY's mannerisms and afterwards teasing HERO. These traits are shared with her HEADSPACE counterpart.
Later in the game, it is also revealed when MARI was younger, she would pull pranks on HERO especially, such as putting bugs in his school desk. It is also shown that she was a perfectionist, spending hours at a time practicing the same piano piece over and over again.
Even after her death, her spirit form is shown to be forgiving towards SUNNY despite what he or she did to her. She also tries to help SUNNY forgive himself or herself and reminds him or her to remember what's important. Despite knowing that her brother or sister accidentally killed her in the past, MARI wishes for SUNNY to move on and live out his or her life without any regrets.
BACKGROUND MARI was born on March 1st to an unnamed mother and father around 19 years before the main game. Three years later, her parents had her little brother or sister, SUNNY. The two grew up in FARAWAY TOWN, living next to KEL's family. MARI used to play softball before suffering from a permanent knee injury. She was friends with HERO and later became friends with KEL, AUBREY, and BASIL. The group would often spend time together, with a romantic relationship forming between her and HERO. MARI also had a black cat named MEWO.
Once, on a trip to FARAWAY PARK, SUNNY nearly drowned but was saved by MARI. Because of this incident, the group stopped going to there.
Prior to the events of the game, MARI would spend a lot of time practicing the piano and taking college prep classes. Because of this, she would spend less time with her younger brother or sister, SUNNY. In an attempt to spend more time with his or her sister, SUNNY picked up violin and the both of them would often practice together for an upcoming recital.
On the day of the recital, MARI and SUNNY had an argument that resulted in him or her accidentally pushing her down the stairs, killing her. In his shock, SUNNY brought her to bed. SUNNY closes in on himself or herself, creating the beginnings of WHITE SPACE.
BASIL, who was dropping by, came up with a plan to frame her death as a suicide. Together, they dragged her body into the backyard. BASIL utilized a jumping rope to create a noose to hang MARI's body with, successfully staging her suicide. Stepping back into the house, both of them looked back at her corpse to see one of her eyes staring at them, traumatizing the children and haunting them in the form of SOMETHING. Though SUNNY and BASIL knew the truth, everyone else was under the impression that MARI had taken her own life.
She was buried at FARAWAY CEMETERY, with her gravestone reading "OUR DEAREST MARI; THE SUN SHINED BRIGHTER WHEN SHE WAS HERE."
Relationship with each character: Sunny: MARI is SUNNY's older sister. Both siblings are shown to dearly love and care for one another as shown throughout many flashbacks and photos from the PHOTO ALBUM. One demonstration of this dear love was when SUNNY accidentally fell into the FARAWAY PARK lake, and almost drowned. He or she was saved from drowning when MARI jumped in after him or her, rescuing and resuscitating him. After saving her brother or sister, MARI collapsed and sobbed out of relief that SUNNY was okay.
Nevertheless, their relationship was not without tension. As MARI grew older, she had less and less time to spend with SUNNY, as she became busy with prepping for college courses and practicing piano. In order to spend more time with her, one Christmas SUNNY received a new violin and started playing violin again, with the intent to eventually play together at a recital. Unbeknownst to MARI this arrangement would eventually sour in the months leading up to the recital: the frustration of being unable to play violin perfectly overwhelmed SUNNY, and he or she began feeling frustrated and angry toward the commitment he or she made as well as MARI.
SUNNY's frustrations would eventually meet a tragic peak the day of the recital. After finding SUNNY's violin destroyed at the bottom of their house's stairs, MARI and SUNNY got in an argument. In the heat of the moment SUNNY pushed MARI down the stairs of their house, which tragically resulted in her death. This, along with the disguising of MARI's accidental death as a suicide, left SUNNY deeply depressed and paralyzed with guilt.
However, in spite of having her life accidentally taken at the hands of SUNNY, it is possible that MARI may not harbor any ill-will toward her brother or sister. Throughout the events of the game, MARI's spirit appears multiple times, telling SUNNY that she still loves him or her, watches over him or her, hopes that he or she, will forgive himself or herself and find happiness.
Furthermore, MARI's spirit often offers words of consolation and comfort to both OMORI and SUNNY, encouraging him or her to overcome his or her fears and reveal the truth of her death to their friends. Over the course of the game, MARI's spirit helps SUNNY learn how to CALM DOWN, FOCUS, PERSIST, and CHERISH. While it's possible that MARI's spirit may simply be a figment of SUNNY's imagination, some events in the game - such as HERO hearing music coming from the piano room in SUNNY's home - imply that she may be real.
Hero: HERO was one of MARI's childhood friends and next-door neighbors. As the two were the oldest in the friend group, MARI and HERO often took responsibility over their younger siblings and friends, watching over them when they fell asleep and making sure everyone was safe. It was strongly implied that they had mutual romantic feelings for one another, as MARI and HERO often spent time together and greatly cared for each other, and on a number of occasions even rested together, such as during BASIL's birthday party.
This is implied further by BASIL describing the two as a "match made in heaven" and by SUNNY envisioning their HEADSPACE variants as being flirtatious with each other. However, the two may have never publicly considered themselves a couple, as none of their friends or siblings explicitly described them to be dating. Whether this was because they didn't want to make MARI's dad upset or because they were simply just friends, is unknown. On the other hand, there's no solid evidence they weren't a couple, so it could go either way.
Regardless of their relationship status, MARI's death was incredibly devastating for HERO. Following her death HERO became severely depressed, to the point that he stopped taking care of his basic needs and withdrew from his hobbies. HERO would remain this way for almost a year, before an emotionally charged encounter with KEL roused him from his stupor. This encounter caused HERO to somewhat regain the ability to take care of himself, beginning to attend school again, and also joined extracurricular activities.
However, though improved from his state of severe depression and emotionally stable on the surface, HERO remains emotionally entangled with his grief over MARI's death. HERO still thinks about MARI everyday, and as revealed by KEL before ONE DAY LEFT, never visited MARI's grave. If SUNNY tries to visit FARAWAY CEMETERY before ONE DAY LEFT while HERO is in the party, HERO refuses to enter, telling SUNNY that he isn't ready yet.
When SUNNY leaves him alone in the piano room, he can be found quietly crying to himself. If SUNNY and his friends visit MARI's grave and leave her flowers, HERO apologizes to MARI for failing to visit her. When SUNNY and his friends visit the stump of the tree where MARI was hanged, HERO tearfully implores for the group to move past the stump after acknowledging that the stump was where the tree used to be.
Aubrey: AUBREY was one of MARI's childhood friends. The two were very close, with both viewing the other as the sister they never had. MARI can be seen consoling AUBREY in one of SUNNY's memories. AUBREY and MARI spent a lot of time with each other, as well as their other friends, and even wanted to dye their hair together at some point - MARI's hair purple, and AUBREY's hair pink. This hair-dyeing would not come to be, as MARI tragically died before they could do anything.
In the years following MARI's death, AUBREY changed greatly. The reaction of their friend group to MARI's death as well as the estrangement of their friend group caused AUBREY to become deeply embittered. To AUBREY, it appeared as though none of her friends cared about MARI, as they outwardly didn't express any grief over MARI's death, and seemed to carry on without sentiment for MARI. Furthermore, none of her friends were there for her when she suffered more tragedy, such as her abandonment by her father.
Left isolated by the loss of MARI and the rest of her friends, AUBREY turned to other outlets to try and process her emotions surrounding MARI. She adopted a rebellious, angry persona and dyed her hair pink, honoring the promise that she made with MARI to dye their hair. She became acquainted with KIM, integrating into KIM's friend group and becoming the de-facto leader of THE HOOLIGANS. In order to find some peace over MARI's death, AUBREY began to regularly attend church, becoming the only member of her old friend group to regularly visit MARI's grave.
In the events of the game, AUBREY lashes out against SUNNY, HERO, and KEL for their reactions to MARI's death - SUNNY and HERO for distancing themselves from the group, and KEL for moving on too quickly. They come into conflict after its revealed she mistakenly believes BASIL vandalized his photos with marker. AUBREY took possession of his photos to safeguard her memory of MARI, later going as far as throwing away all the photos that don't include MARI. By the events of ONE DAY LEFT, she manages to reconcile with the three. When AUBREY visits the TREEHOUSE with everyone else, she takes a pinwheel and places it on the stump of the tree where MARI was hanged to honor her memory.
Basil: BASIL was one of MARI's childhood friends, introduced to her after AUBREY invited him to join their friend group. MARI was greatly nurturing of BASIL. In addition to treating him with the love and care she showed to the rest of the friend group, MARI purchased him his camera as well as his PHOTO ALBUM, and encouraged BASIL to pursue a hobby of photography. Both the camera and PHOTO ALBUM became highly valued treasures to BASIL, as he listened to her encouragement, using the camera to express himself and fill the PHOTO ALBUM with precious memories.
Following the tragic death of MARI at the hands of SUNNY, BASIL's relationship with MARI became complex. In order to protect SUNNY, BASIL convinced SUNNY to help him disguise MARI's death as a suicide by hanging her body. This act left BASIL mentally crippled, unable to handle the guilt of lying to the rest of his friends and the horrific memory of MARI's hanged corpse staring back at him.
To cope, BASIL deluded himself into believing that SUNNY was innocent of any wrongdoing, fabricating the delusion that "something else" had to be responsible for MARI's death and that his gruesome actions were done to protect an innocent SUNNY. He maintained this delusion even as the last remaining memories he had of MARI and his friends in happy times in his PHOTO ALBUM were tarnished with black marker (implied to be either by him or SUNNY), believing that whoever ruined his PHOTO ALBUM was the "something else" that killed MARI.
However, BASIL's actions with MARI's death and the state of his precious PHOTO ALBUM may suggest that BASIL did not truly love her, but other actions suggest otherwise. Despite the tarnished state of his PHOTO ALBUM and no longer using his camera, he still safekept both in his bedroom. Throughout the events of the game he also expresses on multiple occasions his desire to return to a happier time when MARI was alive. Furthermore, it's possible that BASIL may have expressed his grief over MARI through white egret orchids.
In the game, potted white egret orchids can be found in only three FARAWAY TOWN locations: in BASIL'S GRANDMA'S BEDROOM, beside MARI's grave in FARAWAY CEMETERY, and beside the picnic mat at the HANGOUT SPOT. Given the meaning of the white egret orchid in the language of flowers ("my thoughts will follow you into your dreams") and BASIL's affinity with horticulture, it is possible that BASIL may have left these white egret orchids in locations he associated with his loved ones as a gesture of love.
Kel: KEL was one of MARI's childhood friends.
Although KEL and MARI's relationship is the least explored in their friend group, it can be inferred that they cared for one another. MARI acted as a loving sister figure to KEL, making sure that he and the rest of their friends stayed safe and out of trouble. They were comfortable enough that MARI could tease KEL about his height in comparison to HERO's. Furthermore, as MARI and KEL were the only known members of their friend group to participate in sports, it's possible that they may have shared an interest in sports together.
Following MARI's death, KEL - like the rest of their friends - grieved deeply. Of those in the friend group, KEL was the only one who channeled his grief into positivity. Rather than focus on the void created by MARI's loss, KEL decided to involve himself in sports and make himself a positive force in people's lives. He helped rouse HERO out of his state of crippling depression, returning HERO to a state where he could properly take care of himself. In the events of the game, KEL serves as a driving force behind the discovery of the TRUTH and the reunion of the friend group MARI cherished in life in the TRUE ROUTE. When the group reunites and HERO and AUBREY express grief over how much they miss MARI, KEL opts to lift their spirits by stating that MARI would be happy that their friend group is back together again.

When exploring FARAWAY TOWN, SUNNY can interact with various NPCs, some of them offering optional sidequests to complete upon first interaction. A few of these NPCs are figures SUNNY hasn't seen in a long time, such as THE HOOLIGANS, and may bear resemblances to the dreamlike creatures found in HEADSPACE as OMORI. Other than that, the main objective when doing the FARAWAY TOWN segments is to uncover the truth behind SUNNY's past troubles and reconnect with his old friends that he hasn't interacted with in four years. SUNNY and MARI grew up together with KEL, HERO, AUBREY and BASIL in FARAWAY TOWN. The group of friends would always explore different places to hang out and make the best of memories. However, this all changed when MARI died for unknown reasons, shattering the friend group's bond.
Four years after MARI's untimely death, HERO has left for college and SUNNY is moving away. Four days before moving away, SUNNY has the option to meet up with KEL for the first time in years to explore FARAWAY TOWN and its various residents, to reconnect with the bonds he has left. Doing so will initiate the main route of the game, known as the SUNNY ROUTE.
