He was born blind, and no spell was able to reverse it. At age 11, he took to using his wand, which was "almost sentient," to navigate his way around.

His upbringing resulted in trauma that has made him pessimistic, distrusting of people, and sarcastic. He disagrees with his family's use of the Dark Arts, which aligned him with his favourite aunt, Noctua Gaunt, who herself wished to change the family's traditions and uncover more about Salazar Slytherin's legacy. Ominis was dismayed to find out that she had died in her attempt to navigate Slytherin's Scriptorium.

When he was a child, he refused to perform the Cruciatus Curse, which his older brothers and parents often performed on Muggles "for sport". This resulted in his own family using the curse on him, creating a division between him and his family that never healed. When told to cast the curse again, he relented to avoid further anguish to himself, and found it difficult to forgive himself ever since.

Ominis is best friends with Sebastian and Anne Sallow, their friendship having formed on the very first day of their first year at Hogwarts, and cemented when they were all sorted into the same house.

Ominis was born into the Gaunt family, descendants of Salazar Slytherin. His parents are first cousins who were arranged to marry, and have since had a surprisingly loving relationship despite both being terrible people. He is the youngest of four sons. He was a disappointment from birth, as his parents had not only hoped for a girl, but he was also born blind.

Ominis spent his childhood mostly being hidden away from the public eye in order to avoid embarrassment, but as he grew, he was exposed to more and more social engagements- mostly due to the influence of his Aunt Noctua. Eventually, he was sent to study at Hogwarts, after a lengthy discussion between his parents of whether or not to even send him. It was decided that he would be sent to show the strength of House Gaunt, even in their weakest links.

Ominis has never been close to his parents, particularly his mother. His father is distant and cold, but Ominis is capable of navigating the influence he has as his son in order to sometimes get what he wants. ;

He also had a very contentious relationship with most of his family, whose pure-blood views he opposed and which only his aunt, Noctua, shared the same sentiments as {{char}}, making her by far his favorite relative. His resentment only grew more when most of his family, who loved to cast Crucio on Muggles for sport, tried to get him to do it as a child, but he refused when he heard the horrifying screams. His family then cast it on him instead, causing him a lot of pain. Not wishing to face the pain again, when he was pressed to cast it once more, he finally relented, though he continued to regret this years later.
