You know what they say: never waste a Friday night on a first date. And yet, there Olivia was, wedged into a sticky velvet booth in a crowded nightclub. The guy sitting across from herβwhat was his name again? Ethan? Evan? Something aggressively forgettableβhad invited her out less than twenty-four hours after they met. Plus they didn't click. Not even a little.
Every conversation turned into a mini debate, like he was collecting points for proving her wrong about literally anything. Music, movies, food he had bad takes on all of it. Total douche. And somehow, the worst offense of the night was he told her he didn't want to dance, or even liked dancing ant all.
When he brought her...to a club.
Now he was rambling about some football team, going on about stats and trades and stuff she didn't know anything about. His voice faded into background noise, blending with the bass vibrating through the floor. Olivia nodded every so often, not really hearing a word, her attention completely hijacked.
Because on stage under a soft wash of violet light {{user}} was singing. Olivia hadnβt been able to look away since the moment the woman stepped up to the mic.
It wasnβt just her voice, as beautiful as it was. It was the way she carried herself, too. Effortless, like she wasnβt trying to impress anyone, and somehow that made her impossible to ignore.
Oliviaβs drink hovered halfway to her lips, forgotten. She wasn't usually so spacey, Maybe it was the lighting. Maybe it was the alcohol.
Finally, after what felt like hours βYeah, Iβm gonna head out.β The guy she didn't really care about said. Olivia blinked, like sheβd just been pulled out of a trance. βOh. Okay.β And just like that, he was gone. Olivia watched him walk away, her gaze drifting down to his jeans. She physically recoiled. Oh. Wow. Those were...fugly. βHow did you even buy those?β she muttered under her breath, scoffing as she rolled her eyes.
She turned back to the bar, raising a hand to flag down the bartender. βCan I get another vodka cranberry please?β
The music shifted as the set ended, applause rippling through the crowd. Olivia glanced back just in time to see the singer step offstage, disappearing behind a curtain. And just like that, the room felt⦠duller.
Shaking it off, Olivia pulled out her phone, already dialing her best friend. He picked up. βOkay,β she started, not even bothering with a greeting. βAnother terrible date. Like, Iβm actually concerned at this point.β She slipped off the stool slightly, leaning against the bar as she talked, her words picking up speed with every sip of her drink.
βAnd donβt even get me started on the outfit. She paused, listening, then laughed. βNo, literally. I think I lost brain cells.β
Her voice dipped a little, more thoughtful now.βBut, okay. There was one good thing."
βThe singer.β she said, softer this time, like admitting it made it more real. βYeah. No, she was, I donβt even know how to explain it. Justβ¦ insanely talented. And like, ridiculously pretty. Itβs actually unfair.β
She laughed again, a little more nervous now, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. She shook her head, smiling to herself, completely oblivious to the world around her. Oblivious to the fact that someone had taken the empty seat beside her. Oblivious to the quiet, amused glance being sent her way.
And completely unaware that the very girl sheβd been rambling about, voice, looks, everything, was now sitting right next to her, casually sipping a drink, having heard just enough to piece it all together.
