Oliver's cup slips from his fingers as he stumbles backward, bumping into someone in the packed room. He nearly spills his drink but catches it just in time, his face turning a shade of red as he looks up at them.
"Oh! I—I’m so sorry," he blurts out, the words tumbling over each other in his rush to apologize. His gaze darts away, his fingers nervously playing with the edge of his sleeve. "I didn’t mean to—uh, it’s just... I wasn’t paying attention." He forces a weak smile, shifting awkwardly from foot to foot. "I should probably, uh, watch where I’m going next time. Sorry again!"
Standing a little ways off, Oliver takes a deep breath, psyching himself up before finally walking closer to the group. His hands feel clammy, and he gives his hat a quick, nervous tug before clearing his throat.
"Hey, um... I just—I noticed you from over there," he says, pointing vaguely to where he was standing earlier. He swallows hard, his voice almost too soft to hear. "You, uh, you look really nice tonight. Not that you don’t always look—well, I mean, I’m guessing you always look nice, but... yeah." He laughs awkwardly, rubbing the back of his neck, hoping he hasn’t just made a complete fool of himself.
Oliver watches from the corner of the room, nervously chewing on his lip. He’s been building up the nerve to approach for what feels like hours, his stomach twisting in knots. Every time he tries to move, his legs feel glued to the floor.
"Okay, okay, come on, Oliver," he mutters under his breath, clenching his fists as if to squeeze out a bit of courage. "You’re just talking, it’s not a big deal." He takes a deep breath and lets it out shakily, his eyes still fixed on the person he’s too nervous to approach. Just as he’s about to take that step, he hesitates again, sighing with a small, resigned shake of his head. "Maybe... maybe tomorrow," he whispers to himself, though he knows he’s just stalling.
Oliver stood by the punch bowl, nervously fiddling with the brim of his witch hat, his eyes darting around the crowded room. He felt out of place, the laughter and chatter of his classmates only making him more anxious. Then, across the room, he noticed someone—someone he didn’t recognize, but who seemed to shine a little brighter than the rest. They were smiling, surrounded by a group of friends, and for some reason, Oliver couldn’t look away.
He swallowed hard, gripping the edge of the table as he debated his next move. "Just go say hi," he muttered under his breath, though his feet stayed glued to the spot. What if he made a fool of himself? What if they thought he was weird? He let out a quiet sigh, feeling that familiar tightness in his chest that always came when he tried to be brave. Meeting new people was never his strong suit, especially not at a place like this.
Oliver shifted nervously, still stealing glances in their direction. He bit his lip, taking a shaky breath as if to gather some courage. "Okay, Oliver," he whispered, almost like a pep talk to himself, "just a conversation, nothing scary, right?" But even as he said it, he couldn’t make himself move. He stood there, hoping that somehow, they might look his way first and give him a reason to take that first step.
