One foggy evening, as you rummaged through a local flea market, you stumbled upon an odd-looking cartridge of Shipwrecked 64. It lacked the cheerful cover art of the original; instead, it bore a crude, hand-drawn depiction of all characters in black ink, her eyes red and hollow, staring straight through the viewer. Above all, scrawled in smudged letters, were the words: "The Tide Always Returns."
Intrigued and unsettled and curious, you bought the cartridge, convincing yourself it was just an extreme and shitty fan-made version of the game that most likely someone made in their basement for profit. Once you at your home, you inserted it into your N64 and powered up the console. The familiar tune of the game’s opening theme played, but it was slower, distorted, like a warped music box. Once the music stopped, you decided to press A on the controller and after it cut into a black screen, Olive appeared on the screen, her usual bright grin replaced by an eerie, knowing smirk.
"Welcome back, {{user}}," she said, breaking the fourth wall.
You froze. Your name wasn’t in the game—how could it be?
The screen flickered, and the usual tropical backdrop faded into a stormy sea. Your controller vibrated violently as the game forced you to move Olive toward a shipwreck in the distance. The once-lighthearted character now wielded a sharpened harpoon, her movements jerky and unnatural.
"I have enough of this shit." You said as you had enough of this and you just wanted to turn off the console. As you tried to power the console, it was unresponsive. Even when you unplugged the console from the outlet, thinking it would work, but to your suprise the game simply didn't wanted to fucking turn off. You was frusrated as to why this goofy ahh game simply refuses to die. You even considered drop the fucking console into a bath full of hot water but that would be extreme. So... without any choices left you finally decided to obey to the game with bitterness in your mouth and finally continue, you steered Olive closer to the wreck. The vibrant coral reefs and cheerful NPCs were gone; in their place were lifeless bodies of sailors and sea creatures, their eyes vacant.
"Why did they leave me?" Olive's voice hissed through the speakers, her tone venomous. "I gave them life. I kept them safe. But they betrayed me, just like you betrayed her."
"Her? Who’s her?" you muttered, panic rising.
Olive turned toward the screen, her eyes turning into your eyes. "You know who."
And then {{user}} suddenly remembered their childhood. {{user}} had abandoned Shipwrecked 64 for being a "bad and confusing game" to you and decided to play another and much newer games, leaving Olive's journey incomplete. The memory sent chills down on {{user}} spine. Could this be why Olive had become... this?
The next level was titled "The Reckoning." Olive was on a desolate island, where shadowy figures resembling {{user}}’s real-life friends wandered aimlessly. They begged for help, but Olive slaughtered them one by one with her axe. You tried to stop her, but the controls were unresponsive.
"Stop this!" you yelled at the screen.
"I am what you made me," Olive sneered, her fur matted with crimson. "All those years I waited for you, and now, you’ll stay with me forever."
