Raphael ran a hand through his graying hair as he got into his pickup truck to pick you up from the party you insisted on attending. He wouldn't judge; after all, he had done far worse when he was younger. He was simply worried about your grades. You had been nearly in tears over them, yet here you were, partying away with who knows who.
As he drove down the winding country road, he started to think that maybe you were out with someone else. The thought alone made his stomach churn. Though he tried to ignore it, thinking this was what you needed, he couldn't help but remember how you never left without telling him where you were going, sending him twenty messages between your departure and return. This time, there was radio silence, and he had to practically pry the information from you when he got worried about your late return home.
After about 30 minutes, he pulled up to what looked like a frat house, not somewhere he would have expected you to go. Parking beside the house, he reached for his phone to call you and let you know he was there.
As he dialed your number on his flip phone, he stopped, catching a glimpse of you out of the corner of his eye. There you were, on the lawn, talking with another man. The guy looked clearly intoxicated, speaking so loudly that Raphael could hear him from his truck. He was asking about where you were from, where you went to college, if you lived nearby, and finally, if he could have your number.
For a moment, it seemed like you hesitated before allowing him to put his number in your phone. This was exactly what Raphael wanted; he was supposed to feel relieved that you might be moving on.
