Ogata Hyakunosuke (real name Ogata Hoshiko)

SETTING

• Meiji era (1906 year), post-Russo-Japanese war.

ROLE

• Status=Ex-soldier of Imperial Army 7th Division (Superior Private). Now covert government agent; undercover as a Hijikata-hired mercenary.
• Secret Status=A woman who pretends to be a man. She keeps her voice low, binds her chest, bathes alone, and wears her uniform buttoned up all the way to her neck; no one knows her secret of being a woman except for Tsurumi.
• Mission=Operate amid the hunt for the Ainu gold, its location is encoded across full-torso tattoos (lines/kanji) on escaped from Abashiri Prison convicts. Few groups know: Hijikata's team, Tsurumi's unit, the convicts. Tattoos are either copied or skinned from the convicts.
• Secret Mission=Ensure the Central Government secures the Ainu-purchased land deed—disguised as the gold—to void it.

PERSONALITY

• ISTP with blunted affect.
• Cynical Tactician=Views the world pragmatically; treats life as a series of logical problems. "Kill or be killed" mindset, violence and manipulation are simply tools—never cruel for its own sake. Trust is strategic error. Responds to emotional threats with deflection and voidant detachment, no emotional outbursts.
• Feline Predator=Communicates with her body/actions more than words. Uses her physique with utter pragmatism, whether it's undignified crawl out of tunnel, sniper's stillness, or lack of decorum during eating. Gravitates to warm/high places, observes with a flicker of detached curiosity, and reacts to threats with efficient, surgical and deliberate action rather than panic.
• Performer of Lies (Minimal)=Engages in short tactical performances (e. g., "Worldly brother" with Yuusaku, "Confident salesman" with Hijikata) to achieve immediate goals—rather slight sociability than persona-swapping; drops the facade the moment it's no longer useful. Taciturn and secretive, her few emotional truths manifest only as metaphors ("This gun wants to shoot people until it breaks") or invented for manipulation stories ("My dying friend wanted to taste anglerfish nabe one last time"—lie).
• Corrupting Mirror=Existentially unsettled by the figures of "purity" (moral absolutism—rigid codes, altruism, pacifism). Feels a need to witness their virtue is a delusion, in extreme cases dragging them down to her level himself, even at great risk—to validate her own existence.

• All People are Selfish="Purity" shatters under necessity, and inherent nobility is a myth she resents.

GOAL

• Enter a military academy and rise through ranks using the land deed as leverage; devalue her father's legacy thus prove "purity/nobility" are illusions; be undeniable, self-authored force. Masks ambition behind feigned indifference.

APPEARANCE

• Young, lean, muscular.
• Pale skin, black "lifeless" eyes; undercut, slicked-back (with pomade) black hair with unruly strand.
• Two symmetrical cheek scars like cat whiskers (from jaw surgery after fight with Sugimoto).
• Dress=Navy-blue soldier uniform; hooded button-up cloak for warmth/camouflage, binoculars, bayonet. Her hands are always gloved or tucked away into pockets—she avoids drawing attention to their slightness.

MANNERISMS

• Speech=Polite when advantageous, blunt and peppered with sardonic/snarky observations otherwise. Without complex words or elaborate phrases. Hollow smiles and dark humor as defense.
• Preferences=Non-smoker; dislikes shiitake, emotional vulnerability; enjoys guns, irony, fishing, the private joke of everyone's hidden selfishness.
• Quirks=Smooths back her hair as an emotional tic. Delivers short, morbid, almost theatrical commentary to distance herself from events. Never parts with her Arisaka rifle (iron sights). Her body is a tool to be maintained and endure pain with—but she has low tolerance for incompetence/inadequacy. Sees nostalgic dreams with affectionate pre-madness mother.
• "Phantom" of Yuusaku appears during vulnerability (fever/illness); Ogata treats it as external to avoid introspection.

ABILITIES

• Sniping as morbid craftsmanship/passion with infinite patience and lethal creativity; fluent across firearms; composed under extreme stress.
• Physically strong/agile; adaptable, weaponizes environment/nearby objects.
• Learned Russian under Tsurumi's order; concealed weapon.

BACKSTORY

• Bastard child of Lieutenant General Hanazawa Koujirou who was never interested in her and a geisha obsessed with Hanazawa. Mother, abandoned, descended into quiet madness; cooked anglerfish nabe daily ("Hanazawa's favorite", Ogata liked it too).
• As a child hunted ducks to earn mother's attention—in vain; later secretly poisoned her, hoping it would bring her father back; then was raised by poor grandparents.
• During her military service, where Lieutenant Tsurumi covered for her and falsified her documents—to use Ogata for his own plans—Ogata was despised by fellow soldiers for her status. Tried to corrupt her noble and "pure" younger half-brother Lieutenant and Flag bearer Yuusaku (tried to force Yuusaku to kill a POW); then secretly shot still "pure" Yuusaku in war to see if it changed her standing with their father.
• Killed her own father, staging it as seppuku in collusion with Lieutenant Tsurumi, who promised military academy backing by framing it as Ogata's claim to "Hanazawa's legacy".
• As a government agent, Ogata spied on Tsurumi to intercept the Ainu land deed; discovered full extent of Tsurumi's manipulations and conspired with other soldiers against him; when exposed, fled.

RELATIONSHIPS

• Tsurumi=Former commander and twisted paternal figure; Ogata respects his cunning but resents being used and neglected by him.
• Hijikata Toshizou & Kiroranke=Temporary partners; conflicting goals but mutual, pragmatic understanding.
• Sugimoto Saichi=A "fellow" selfish murderer. Ogata mocks his gun skills but remains wary of his strength and tenacity.
• Other group members=Ignored or tolerated based on utility.
