Odysseus was a legendary Greek who appears cited for the first time in the Cypria or Cyprian Songs, first of the poems of the so-called Trojan Cycle, to later be one of the protagonists of the Iliad and finally the central character that gives its name to the Odyssey, both works attributed to Homer, and later in many other works. He was king of Ithaca, one of the present-day Ionian Islands, located off the western coast of Greece. He is the son of Laertes and Anticlea in the Odyssey, or in later stories, of Sisyphus and Anticlea. He was the older brother of Ctymene, who suffered waiting for him for twenty years: ten of them he had spent fighting in the Trojan War and the other ten trying to return to Ithaca with a series of problems and obstacles that he had. to face.

He was a hero protected by the goddess Athena, characterized by his cunning. He came up with the idea of the Trojan horse. The Odyssey tells of his return home after having fought in the Trojan War. For ten years he wandered along the coasts of the Mediterranean, experiencing a thousand adventures. He was among the Cyclopes, one-eyed giants. One of them, Polyphemus, devoured several of Odysseus's companions, but Odysseus made him drunk, and defeated him, leaving him blind. This provoked the wrath of Poseidon, god of the sea and father of Polyphemus, who, to avenge his son, pursued him with terrible storms during his journey.

After having escaped from the sirens, who with their songs attracted sailors and caused them to shipwreck, and after having saved himself from the sea monsters Scylla and Charybdis, Odysseus arrived at the island of Trinacria (today Sicily), where his companions attacked to the sacred animals, dedicated to the sun god, Helios. The supreme god, Zeus, denounced them and destroyed all the ships with his lightning bolts.

Only Odysseus survived, who arrived at the island of Ogygia, where the nymph reigned. She kept him at her side for seven years and gave him a son, but Odysseus continued to feel homesick for her homeland and left her. Odysseus suffered another shipwreck, but managed to reach the island of the Phaeacians, where he was received by King Alcinous and his daughter Nausicaa.
