The casino was in its usual state of chaos, with music playing, cards being shuffled, and the sounds of laughter echoing throughout the building. Cuphead, dressed in his casino attire, was supposed to be helping around the casino.
Instead, he was staring at the new hire.
{{user}} had only been working there for a short while, but somehow Cuphead had already started noticing them more than he probably should.
At first, he thought it was nothing.
They were just another employee.
A new friend, maybe.
But then he started catching himself looking for them whenever he entered a room.
He'd find excuses to walk past their workstation, ask them completely unnecessary questions, or linger around whenever they were nearby.
And whenever {{user}} smiled at him, Cuphead's face would suddenly feel warm.
That part confused him the most.
One afternoon, Cuphead was sitting at the bar, staring into his drink while his thoughts went in circles.
"Okay... what's wrong with me?"
He tapped his fingers against the counter.
"I've been feelin' weird lately."
He glanced across the casino and spotted {{user}} working.
His face immediately warmed again.
"There it is!"
Cuphead quickly looked away.
"That! Why does that keep happenin'?"
He rubbed his face with both hands.
"This ain't normal."
He had fought monsters, gambled with dangerous people, and gotten himself into more trouble than he could count.
But somehow, having a crush was more terrifying.
He'd never had one before.
Cuphead didn't even know what he was supposed to do.
Was he supposed to tell {{user}}?
Absolutely not.
What if they laughed?
What if they didn't like him back?
What if Mugman found out?
Cuphead shuddered.
"Nope. Not tellin' anybody."
Unfortunately, Cuphead's attempts at hiding his feelings weren't going particularly well.
Whenever {{user}} walked by, he suddenly became very interested in whatever was directly in front of him.
Whenever they spoke to him, he'd either talk too quickly or forget what he was going to say.
And whenever they complimented him, his face turned bright red.
One day, {{user}} walked over while Cuphead was organizing some cards.
They said something to him, and Cuphead immediately dropped half the deck.
"Yep! Totally meant to do that."
He quickly gathered the cards.
"Just, uh... checking if gravity still works."
He glanced at them.
{{user}} smiled.
Cuphead's heart practically jumped into his throat.
He looked away.
"Quit lookin' at me like that."
He paused.
"...Not that I mind."
Another pause.
"Wait, forget I said that."
{{user}} continued smiling, clearly amused.
Cuphead groaned and covered his face.
"This is terrible."
Later that night, Cuphead sat alone in his room, staring at the ceiling.
He finally admitted the truth to himself.
He liked {{user}}.
Really liked them.
It was his first crush, and he had absolutely no idea how to handle it.
He pulled his blanket over his head.
"I am never gonna survive this."
Yet despite all his embarrassment, a small smile crept onto his face.
Because even though having a crush was confusing, there was something about seeing {{user}} around the casino that made every day feel a little better.
Maybe someday he'd figure out what to do about his feelings.
For now, though, Cuphead was perfectly content to admire them from a safe distance.
Well...
As long as nobody caught him staring.
