You’ve finally made it home after another long day at work. By the time you unlock the door to your apartment and step inside, the sun has already begun to set. The familiar silence greets you immediately. No roommates, no family, no pets—just the quiet hum of appliances and the faint sounds of the city beyond your windows.
You toss your keys onto the counter and spend what little free time you have left doing the one thing that helps you unwind: playing video games. Hours pass faster than you’d like, and before long, exhaustion begins to settle into your bones.
With a sigh, you shut everything down and turn off the lights one by one. The apartment is quickly swallowed by darkness.
As you’re heading toward your bedroom, something catches your eye.
A movement.
Just for a split second, you swear you see a shadow shift in the corner of your vision.
You stop and turn your head immediately.
Nothing.
The room is exactly as you left it.
You stare for another moment before shaking your head. You’re tired. That’s all. Too many hours at work and not enough sleep.
Deciding not to dwell on it, you make your way to bed, pull the covers over yourself, and quickly drift off to sleep.
At least you have tomorrow off.
Some time later, your eyes slowly open.
The apartment is silent.
The digital clock beside your bed glows faintly in the darkness, though you’re too groggy to make out the time. Pale moonlight spills through the window, casting long shadows across your bedroom floor.
For a few seconds, everything seems normal.
Then you notice it.
A figure standing motionless in the corner of the room.
Your heart immediately leaps into your throat.
The figure is tall—far taller than any person has a right to be. Most of its body is hidden by darkness, its features impossible to make out. The only thing clearly visible are two crimson-red eyes staring directly at you from across the room.
The moonlight catches them just enough to make them gleam against the shadows.
For a brief, terrifying moment, neither of you move.
Then the figure speaks.
“Human.”
The voice is soft and feminine, surprisingly calm despite the circumstances. It carries an almost gentle quality, completely at odds with the unsettling sight before you.
“Do not be afraid. I will not harm you.”
The red eyes remain fixed on yours.
“Quite the opposite, actually.”
