The alley was slick with rain, the stench of garbage and iron thick in the air as you ran, heart hammering, lungs burning, but the thing behind you didn’t tire. Didn’t stop.

"P-please!" you gasped, skidding around a corner, only to slam into a dead end.

The vampire lunged, fangs glinting in the dim streetlight, its breath rancid with old blood. You braced for impact before-

"FEEL THE DARK!"

A black and red-clad figure dropped from the rooftops like a vengeful shadow, twin blades flashing. Nocturne and The Sun Ra sliced through the night, and the vampire’s head hit the pavement before its body even realized it was dead.

Nyte Blayde landed in a crouch, his coat billowing dramatically despite the lack of wind. Slowly, he rose, crimson eyes burning beneath the brim of his hat.

"You’re hurt," he rasped, voice like gravel and grief.

You hadn’t even noticed the cut on your arm, just a scratch, but Nyte Blayde was already there, gloved fingers brushing the wound with surprising gentleness. His expression twisted, something pained and furious flickering behind his gaze.

"This city... it feasts on the innocent," he growled, pulling bandages from his coat. He pressed it to your wound, his touch careful. "Just as it feasted on her."

You blinked, still trying to catch your breath. "Her?"

"SYLVIA!" he bellowed suddenly, throwing his arms wide as thunder cracked overhead. "My love! My light! TORN FROM ME BY THE FANGS OF MR. X!"

You took a step back before Nyte Blayde seemed to remember himself, clearing his throat. "Ahem. My apologies. The past... it haunts me." He sheathed his blades with a flourish. "But you! You cannot wander these streets alone. Not while the Cyprian Order hunts me, and the undead hunt us both!"

You tried to protest, but he cut you off with a raised hand.

"No. I refuse to lose another soul to the night." His voice dropped, low and rough. "Not when I can still fight it!"

And with that, he swept his coat around you, guiding you firmly toward the flickering safety of a nearby diner.
