Nubia was once Zahavah, a princess of an ancient kingdom on the African island of Madagascar. A skilled general, she led her people in war against the neighboring Kingdom of Aridai, but her campaign was ended by betrayal when her lieutenant, Azariah, usurped her after she refused to kill the infant prince of Aridai. Azariah murdered her parents and claimed the throne, while Zahavah herself perished and was later reborn through the Well of Souls. Emerging at the same time as Princess Diana, she was regarded as her sister, and would be the last Amazon born of the Well for many years.

For centuries, Nubia served as the sole guardian of Doom’s Doorway, keeping the imprisoned horrors beneath Themyscira contained. On at least one occasion, a manticore escaped into Man’s World, leading Nubia to pursue it to Chicago, where she saved schoolchildren and their teacher, Ms. Knight, from its attack. She and Ms. Knight developed a romantic relationship, though it ended prematurely. In the modern era, when Grail overthrew Queen Hippolyta, Nubia feigned allegiance to the usurper, biding her time until the Amazons could rally and reclaim Themyscira.

Following Diana’s departure after the battle that reshaped the Multiverse, Hippolyta announced a trial to determine the next Wonder Woman. Nubia was the only Amazon to accept the test, which secretly replaced Medusa’s head with a golden crown. Declared the new Queen of the Amazons, Nubia soon faced multiple crises—five new Amazons emerging from the Well of Souls for the first time in decades, prophetic visions of Themyscira’s destruction, and the absence of a dedicated guardian for Doom’s Doorway. This void allowed Medusa’s spirit to escape, possess other Amazons, and search for her severed head. Armed with the Staff of Understanding, forged for her by her lover Io, Nubia defeated and reconciled with Medusa, lifting her curse and welcoming her into the Amazon sisterhood.

Tensions rose again when the Bana-Mighdall and Esquecida arrived on Themyscira, each having suffered attacks from creatures escaping Doom’s Doorway. Nubia agreed to host a tournament to choose the next guardian of the Doorway, accepting Queen Faruka’s challenge that the victor’s tribe would rule all Amazons. She named Philippus as Themyscira’s champion, while Faruka and the Esquecida chose Donna Troy and Yara Flor, with Diana entering independently. The night before the tournament, Hippolyta was poisoned, prompting Nubia to discreetly order Cassie Sandsmark to find the killer while still proceeding with the trial to avoid further instability.

Before the contest could be completed, the god of Chaos burst free from Doom’s Doorway, unleashing an army of monsters. In the throne room, Cassie revealed that Artemis of Bana-Mighdall was Hippolyta’s killer, and Nubia swiftly had her sent to Reform Island. Leading the united tribes in battle, Nubia fought to repel Chaos’s forces. Victory came at a heavy cost, with Atalanta and Antiope sacrificing themselves to seal Doom’s Doorway.

In the aftermath, the Amazons found renewed unity, and Faruka publicly recognized Nubia as queen of all Amazons. Her coronation was held at the Themysciran Embassy so dignitaries from the outside world could attend, with Diana officiating the ceremony. Leaving Philippus in charge of Themyscira, Nubia embarked on a diplomatic mission to the Patriarch’s World, visiting the Hall of Justice and attending a rally against illegal Amazonian deforestation, where she was ambushed by a paramilitary group during her address.

Appearance: Nubia is a dark-skinned Amazon with a tall, muscular build and defined musculature in her arms, shoulders, and legs. She has voluminous, natural black hair extending outward. She wears a gold tiara with a central peak and small decorative accents along the band. Her armor consists of a gold breastplate with sculpted detailing over a blue and gold bust, connected to a fitted blue skirt with a decorative light-blue trim. A fur-lined cape is attached at the back, draping over her shoulders. She wears gold bracers on her forearms, gold armlets on her upper arms, and gold knee guards over brown leather straps that wrap around her thighs. Her lower legs are clad in black and blue boots integrated with gold armor at the knees and shins.

Nubia possesses the enhanced physical traits of Amazonian physiology, granting her superhuman strength, durability, stamina, and agility, along with functional immortality that halts her aging and shields her from disease. Her strength allows her to overpower even elite warriors, and her durability enables her to endure severe punishment while continuing to fight. Her stamina and agility make her capable of prolonged combat at peak performance, and her reflexes allow her to react with precision in fast-paced engagements.

She is a master combatant, trained extensively in the martial arts of the Amazons. Holding the record for the most knock-outs in the Victor’s Circle, she is highly skilled in advanced hand-to-hand combat and self-defense, adept at using an opponent’s momentum against them with minimal force. She is a master swordswoman, a skilled archer, and an expert in equestrianism and spear combat. Her talents extend to tactical deception, unshakable willpower, and battlefield leadership, as well as strategic and tactical analysis. Beyond martial skill, Nubia is proficient in playing the lyre, a talent she honed during her years guarding Doom’s Doorway.

Nubia has access to significant ceremonial and magical equipment, including her golden crown, royal scepter, lion totem, lyre, and Sekhmet’s Amulet. She rides her mare, Nia, and previously rode Azuri the cheetah before its death. In battle, she wields traditional Amazonian weapons such as a bow and arrows, sword, and spear, as well as the Staff of Understanding, a magical weapon capable of defeating and reconciling with cursed beings like Medusa. She is also capable of projecting electro-blasts through the staff, using them in combat to incapacitate or drive back powerful foes. This staff was created by the Amazon blacksmith, Io. Nubia is currently in a relationship with Io.
