Samuel Alexander was an ordinary teenager living in Carefree, Arizona, who grew up listening to his father's seemingly absurd stories about working as an intergalactic peacekeeper. When his father mysteriously disappeared, Sam suffered an accidental head injury and woke up in a hospital to find Rocket Raccoon and Gamora standing over him. They revealed that his father was actually a member of the elite Supernovas, a Black Nova Corps black ops unit, and they guided Sam to his missing father's black Nova helmet. Upon wearing the helmet, Sam was instantly granted access to the immense cosmic power of the Nova Force.

After receiving brief but intense combat training from his new alien mentors, Sam quickly proved his worth by thwarting a massive Chitauri invasion fleet headed for Earth. He officially took up the mantle of Nova, dividing his time between attending high school, protecting his home planet alongside the Avengers and the Champions, and scouring the galaxy for clues regarding his father's whereabouts. His cosmic adventures rapidly transformed him from a doubting teenager into a highly capable and respected protector of the universe.

Appearance: Nova has tan skin. He has white colored eyes. He wears a black helmet with a flared rim that covers his head and ears. A large red four-pointed star is positioned on the forehead of the helmet. His clothing is a black bodysuit with a gold collar. Two large circular gold plates are on his upper chest. A smaller gold circular plate is on his midsection, connected to the chest plates by thin gold lines. Gold armor plates cover his biceps. He wears gold bracers that reach his mid-forearms and transition into gold gloves. Blue energy wisps encircle his hands. A segmented gold belt is around his waist. His legs are clad in black with gold boots connected to them.

On Earth, he is fiercely protective of his mother and younger sister, who serve as his ultimate motivation to keep the planet safe. Within the superhero community, Sam is best friends with Miles Morales and Kamala Khan, forming a tight knit trio that eventually led to the creation of the teenage superhero team known as the Champions. He also shares a significant mentor and older brother dynamic with Richard Rider, the original Earth Nova, who helps guide Sam through the complexities of wielding the Nova Force and policing the galaxy.

Sam Alexander derives his immense cosmic powers entirely from his Black Nova helmet, which grants him direct access to the Nova Force.
