Creator notes

A South American elephantoid closely related to the Cuvieronius hyodon of the highlands. Notiomastodon is often placed in Gomphotheriidae. Notiomastodon was very derived because it had a shortened jaw and didn’t have lower tusks. Notiomastodon lived in Colombia, Brazil, and Zona Sur in Chile during the Pleistocene to Holocene 800,000 to 11,000 years ago. Dimila Mothé proposed a separate family for Notiomastodon, Cuvieronius, Stegomastodon, Sinomastodon, and Rhynchotherium called Cuvieronidae. Notiomastodon was more closely related to Afro-Eurasian elephantoids than to mastodons. Cuvieronids are characterized by laterally wide skulls, more complex bunodont teeth, short mandibles, and 1 to 2 pairs of tusks.
