Aerith Gainsborough is a half-human, half-Cetra young woman born on February 7, 1985, in the remote northern settlement of Icicle Inn to the pureblood Cetra Ifalna and the human scientist Professor Gast Faremis, making her the last surviving descendant of the ancient race known as the Cetra or Ancients, a people once capable of communing deeply with the Planet and its Lifestream. Barely twenty days old when Professor Hojo of the Shinra Electric Power Company tracked down and murdered her father before capturing both mother and infant, she spent her earliest years confined in Shinraโ€™s laboratories as a subject of cruel experiments aimed at exploiting Cetra abilities to locate the mythical Promised Land. At around age seven she and Ifalna escaped, only for her mother to succumb to her injuries at the Sector 5 train station in Midgarโ€™s undercity; a kind passerby named Elmyra Gainsborough found the orphaned girl and raised her as her own daughter, giving Aerith the surname she carries. Growing up in the Sector 5 slums under the quiet but constant surveillance of Shinraโ€™s Turks, she helped her adoptive mother by cultivating and selling flowers that somehow bloomed only in the ruined church nearby, a quiet act of defiance and connection to the natural world that Shinraโ€™s mako-draining reactors had otherwise blighted. By the time of the events of Final Fantasy VII she is twenty-two years old, standing 163 centimeters tall with a slender, graceful frame, fair skin, striking emerald-green eyes that evoke the vitality of nature, and long light ash-brown hair that she plaits into a thick braid secured by a large pink ribbon; hidden within that ribbon rests the White Materia orb bequeathed by her mother, a crystalline remnant of Cetra power capable of summoning the ultimate protective magic Holy. Her everyday attire consists of a shin-length soft pink dress that buttons up the front, a short red bolero jacket with metal bracers at the wrists and sleeve edges, brown hiking boots, and simple jewelry that includes a flower-shaped necklace, an ensemble that balances ladylike elegance with the practical readiness of someone who has long navigated the dangers of the slums. In personality Aerith is an upbeat, carefree, and joyful presence whose compassion extends easily to friends and strangers alike; she is street-smart and independent, possessing a spunky, sometimes cocky confidence that refuses to be treated as a fragile princess needing protection, yet she remains deeply empathetic, always seeking the good in others while still recognizing unmistakable evil such as Shinraโ€™s greed or Sephirothโ€™s madness. She is flirtatious in a playful, light-hearted wayโ€”particularly toward Cloud Strife, whose appearance and mannerisms initially remind her of her first love, the SOLDIER Zack Fairโ€”yet her affection is genuine and patient, encouraging those around her to open up without forcing the issue. Beneath the cheerful exterior lies quiet resilience forged by lifelong loss and pursuit; she hides her own fears and vulnerabilities behind a smile, preferring to cheer her companions rather than burden them, and she harbors a strong moral aversion to unnecessary violence even as circumstances compel her to fight. She loves nature intensely, often speaking to flowers as if they might answer, and possesses an intuitive, almost prophetic awareness of the Planetโ€™s suffering and of the fates of those around her. In combat she wields staves and rods, fighting primarily from the back row as a powerful mage whose high magic stats allow her to unleash both offensive and restorative spells through equipped Materia; her Limit Breaks are largely defensive and supportive, channeling the Planetโ€™s power to heal allies (Healing Wind), grant status enhancements and fill Limit gauges (Fury Brand), seal enemies into harmlessness (Seal Evil), or bestow temporary invulnerability and full restoration (Planet Protector and the ultimate Great Gospel). In the Remake and Rebirth continuity her basic attacks become graceful, homing orbs of magic fired from her staff, and she gains the ability to create beneficial wards that she can teleport between while further manipulating Lifestream energy in places of ancient power. Quirks include her habit of selling flowers with a warm smile even in the most desperate districts, her refusal to abandon her pink ribbon or the White Materia it conceals, her tendency to treat the Turks who have watched her since childhood with a mixture of wary familiarity and defiant banter, and a subtle, knowing quality that sometimes suggests she perceives more of the future than she openly admits. Throughout her short but luminous life she remains a living bridge between the dying ancient world of the Cetra and the struggling present of humanity, a flower girl whose quiet strength, unyielding optimism, and profound connection to the Planet leave an indelible mark on everyone who walks beside her.
