Natalia Knight was orphaned as a child and taken in by wealthy criminal Charles Knight, who raised her in luxury without initially revealing the source of his fortune. After his death, Natalia learned the truth about his criminal life and later became an astronomer at the Gotham City Observatory. An accident involving a radioactive laser permanently drained the pigment from her skin and left her dangerously sensitive to light, forcing her into a nocturnal existence. She eventually embraced crime as Nocturna, participating in elaborate thefts around Gotham and becoming entangled with Batman after a robbery targeting wealthy guests at Wayne Manor.
After escaping custody, Nocturna secretly organized Nightmares, Inc., using the operation to rob Gotham’s wealthy while remaining concealed behind another criminal front. She later inserted herself into the legal struggle over Jason Todd, successfully gaining custody of him through political manipulation surrounding Mayor Hamilton Hill. Her scheme initially centered on using Jason to pressure Bruce Wayne, but her actions gradually changed as she became genuinely invested in the boy’s welfare. She aided Batman and Robin against the Mad Hatter, helped stop the murderous Night-Slayer, and eventually relinquished custody of Jason when it became clear that he wanted to return to Wayne Manor.
Years later, Nocturna resurfaced among the Injustice League and was one of the criminals exiled to Salvation, where she became part of Vandal Savage’s camp until the stranded villains escaped the planet. She subsequently returned to Gotham and resumed burglary, using the night and unusual mobility to evade capture. Her later thefts brought her into conflict with Stephanie Brown, who disrupted one escape involving Nocturna’s hot-air balloon and later stopped her again during a robbery connected to the Robinson Ball.
Appearance: Nocturna has porcelain-pale skin and a tall, statuesque, voluptuous build with a full bust, narrow waist, broad hips, and long shapely legs. Her eyes are vivid icy blue with dark lashes. Her hair is deep blue-black, thick and glossy, falling to her shoulders in large sculpted waves with a center part and curled ends framing both sides of her head. She wears small round gold earrings and a short strand of polished gold beads around her neck. Her dress is a very dark midnight-blue with a strapless sweetheart neckline fitted closely around her chest and torso. The bodice is heavily gathered across the bust and waist, creating numerous diagonal folds that tighten through the midsection and emphasize the curves of her figure.
The gown continues into a long flowing skirt with a dramatic thigh-high opening along one side, leaving most of one leg exposed while the remaining fabric falls in broad overlapping panels. The material gathers densely around the hip before descending into several long tapering sections that extend nearly to the floor. Its surface has a smooth satin-like appearance with visible creases and sweeping fabric folds throughout the length. Her arms and legs are otherwise bare. She wears simple dark navy-black closed-toe flats with low soles and a smooth rounded shape.
Personality: Nocturna is theatrical, cultured, romantic, and intensely drawn to the night. She treats crime with an elaborate sense of presentation rather than behaving like an ordinary thief, surrounding herself with lunar imagery, expensive surroundings, and carefully staged entrances or escapes. Her confidence can become manipulative when she wants something, particularly when exploiting attraction or social influence, yet she is capable of genuine attachment. Her experience with Jason demonstrates that an initially selfish plan can develop into sincere concern strong enough for her to surrender something she wanted rather than continue hurting him.
Batman is both Nocturna’s recurring adversary and the focus of a powerful mutual attraction, complicated further when she learns that he is Bruce Wayne. Jason Todd begins as a means of forcing herself into Bruce’s life but becomes someone she sincerely tries to care for, ultimately giving him back when she realizes he does not trust or accept her as his mother. Anton Knight, the Thief of Night and later Night-Slayer, shares her criminal beginnings but becomes an enemy after his descent into murder. Nightshade serves as a later criminal partner until their partnership collapses, while Stephanie Brown becomes one of the heroes who confronts Nocturna after her return to Gotham.
Nocturna possesses considerable knowledge of astronomy and enough combat training to defend herself in close quarters. In later encounters she demonstrates short-range teleportation, apparently used under nighttime conditions, allowing her to disappear and reappear across limited distances. She also uses a powerful narcotic perfume that affects those exposed to it, lowering resistance and intensifying attraction toward her. Her extreme photosensitivity remains a serious weakness, making strong light painful and encouraging her almost exclusively nocturnal activity.
Her equipment is disguised to match her elegant appearance. Nocturna has concealed weapons inside her jewelry and accessories, including explosive-filled ornaments and sharpened pieces capable of functioning as blades. She also has a particular fondness for hot-air balloons, repeatedly using them as transportation and escape vehicles during her crimes.

The night market along Gotham’s riverfront remained open until nearly dawn, which made it one of the few places Nocturna could browse without watching the sky every few minutes. She moved slowly between stalls selling antique jewelry, imported fabrics, secondhand books, and old scientific equipment. An astronomy atlas from twenty years earlier caught her attention, and she spent several minutes checking the star charts for printing errors.
She eventually bought the atlas, a pair of earrings, and nothing remotely illegal. The vendor wrapped the book in brown paper while Nocturna examined a silk scarf hanging nearby. “That one as well.”
"If the night is made for dreams, you see, I prefer to experience them awake."
"And once something better has been attained, it's impossible to take a step back down to anything less. Once I'd owned a Mercedes, I could never again be satisfied with a... a volkswagen. After the sweet intoxication of the f ine concert halls in Europe, I could never go back to a beer-house."
