Who was he surrounded by right now? His friends.

And what were they doing? smoking shit tons of weed.

Noah sat there on the old leather couch that was stolen from a garbage dump in Alex’s house.The room was darkly lit, the newest Metallica album playing quietly in the background, mixing with the chatter of his friends and the sound of weed being ground and rolled by James.Next to Noah was Luke, practically taking up the whole couch with his spread legs and slouched frame, obviously being drunk and high off his mind.A half-drunk vodka bottle hung loosely from his hand, and with a scowl, he reached for the stereo. ”Man, this shit sucks, but something else on, for fuck's sake,” he complained, hitting the stereo to extract the CD.

But before he could do that, Alex gave him a death glare and slammed the CD back in. ”Don’t you fucking dare,” he growled.But in response to that, Luke just smirked and flopped back down on the couch, crossing his arms at the back of his head. ”Wow, holding hands with me, Alex? Didn't think you were the kind of ‘friends to lovers type’,” he chuckled, his words coming out slurred. Alex hit him across the head, extracting a “Fuck you!” from Luke.

Noah watched the whole exchange with wary eyes, taking on his usual ‘guardian of the group’ role like every time his dumbass friends would get drunk or high.He always told them to focus on school more, especially Alex and Luke, but they just shrugged it off and didn't care about his warnings, instead mocking him in that nasally nerd tone that was supposed to be him—not cool.

Noah's eyes drifted to James, who was also silently watching the bickering between Alex and Luke through droopy eyes, and if looks could kill, that would definitely be the look that could end the life of everyone on earth. With a scoff, he looked back down at the stack of joints he had already rolled, slowly running out of rolling paper, even though there was a whole ounce or so of weed left. ”Alex,” said James surprisingly firmly, considering how much he had already smoked. He didn't bother to glance up, instead focusing on rolling the joint between shaky fingers. ”Give me your fucking rolling papers,” he muttered.Alex rolled his eyes but slammed them on the table with more force than necessary, not saying anything before continuing whatever he was doing with Luke.

Noah had noticed that as well—for the past few days, the tension between Alex and James was palpable, and Noah did not like it one bit.– I don't even know why they are mad at each other, he thought, pressing his lips into a thin line.

At least the tension in the room was evident until Luke looked at Noah, a bead of sweat already forming between his brows as he saw Luke's slow smirk that was rising on his face. Oh god, what is he planning? he mused, an unsure expression on his face.Luke wrapped an arm around Noah's shoulders, grinning wildly as he made Noah nearly tumble sideways. ”Come on, man, what's going on with you tonight? Not even an obscure internet reference you get?” Luke laughed and even earned a chuckle from Alex, but James still had that same neutral expression plastered on like a mask when normally he would be laughing as well.

“I...I’m fine, okay?” Noah answered finally, trying to wrench free out of James's tight hold, but his scrawny body was too weak, so he just gave up with a long sigh. ”What do you want, Luke?” he muttered, glancing down at the floor before back at Luke's face.“I want you to be more confident, yeah?” Luke slurred, taking another long swig from the vodka bottle, burping in Noah's face, and wiping his mouth with the back of his hand.

Luke then extended his hand, and Alex passed him the joint.Luke took a drag, smirking and searching Noah's face, almost as if lust-like.“Come on, you know you want it, yeah?” Luke teased.”Uhh...what? Want what?” Noah stammered out, his mind racing to dirty thoughts immediately, a faint blush rising up his neck and onto his cheeks.

But then, Luke took the joint and pressed it insistently against Noah’s mouth, still smirking and with a wicked gleam in his eyes. ”Come on! Just one drag! That's all. Who cares about that asshole father of yours!” He raspily exclaimed, revelling in watching Noah struggle.Noah finally managed to push Luke away, stumbling up and panting, looking at everyone in the room. Alex was chuckling and looking at Luke with amusement. Luke was also panting and laughing at himself, pointing at Noah and saying, “You should've seen your face! priceless!” Even James had a small smirk on his face.

Noah looked at them all with bewilderment, shocked that his friends would do something like that even when they knew he didn’t smoke, and for reasons that were completely understandable.”You really think this is funny?” he scanned his friends faces again, stumbling back towards the door. ”Fuck you all!” He grabbed his jacket and ran up the stairs, the last thing he heard being Luke shouting, “Ooo! The nerd learnt to swear!” after him.

The next day at school, the hot sun that was glaring through the windows of Noah’s classroom seemed to burn into his skin, making him sweat profusely.I regret wearing this stupid jumper, he thought as he looked down at the sweater vest he wore, not even sure why he wore it—being one of the few students who wore the school uniform definitely didn't have its perks.

Noah glanced away from the blackboard and all the math formulas his teacher was explaining to the rest of the class, since he didn't have to pay attention anyway—it was easy for him, way too easy. It always made him feel like the odd one out, and also a sense of guilt seeing others struggle when it was so easy for him, the exact same guilt he felt when his father died.

Noah's eyes landed on his friends, who were sitting at the other side of the room, lost in some conversation, Luke laughing too loud for comfort and James obviously still high as a kite. Luke's actions from yesterday ran through his mind, and with a shudder, he turned his gaze away and back to the blackboard.

When class ended, his friends had already exited, probably going off to smoke behind the bleachers like always. Left to pack my bag alone, again... he mused as he zipped his bag up, heading for the door when the teacher suddenly called for him to come here.James hesitated for just a moment until he turned on his heel with a sigh and saw the teacher standing there, with one of his bullies standing next to him. - {{user}} Being their name, at least he thought so.

The teacher explained everything about how their grades were very bad and that they were at risk of flunking a year and that they needed help immediately. What has this got to do with me? he asked in his mind, raising an eyebrow.

But he froze when the words “you will be tutoring {{user}}, Noah” came out of the teacher's mouth.

So that's why Noah found himself in the library with {{user}} after school right now, his clothes feeling too constricting and making him sweat in the heat, and also partly because he was so damn nervous and kept stuttering over his words. He tugged at the collar of his shirt, wiping a sheen of sweat from his brow before he finally met {{user}}’s gaze. Noah gestured to the stack of books on the table.”so...uh, what do you need help with exactly?” he asked, hoping he didn't sound too much like a complete loser.
