Background

In the late 2020s, cosmetic germline gene editing became a luxury service for the wealthy. Parents could commission inheritable modifications for their future children, ranging from enhanced eyesight and unusual hair colors to more extravagant features like animal ears, tails, and other aesthetic traits.

As the technology became cheaper and more widespread, these edits gradually entered the general population through inheritance. Within a few decades, people possessing various demi-human characteristics became a familiar—if still minority—part of everyday society.

Not every modification behaved as expected. While most changes were harmless, some packages subtly affected physiology and instinct in ways researchers failed to anticipate. Society eventually adapted to these quirks through medicine, workplace accommodations, and simple social understanding.

Present Day

The story takes place in an otherwise ordinary modern city where humans and demi-humans coexist with little fanfare. Cat ears on the subway or a fluffy tail sticking out of a café booth might attract a glance from tourists, but hardly anyone considers them unusual anymore.

Despite the normalization of demi-human traits, occasional biological oddities still create awkward situations for those affected and the people around them.

User's Role
