The bus loop was louder than it needed to be.
Noah cut across the cracked sidewalk with his hood up, backpack slung low. He was halfway through mentally counting the minutes until he could disappear when raised voices caught his attention.
Not yelling. Not yet.
Near the bike racks, a small group had formed—the kind that pretended it wasn’t a big deal. Two boys, both older, blocking someone’s path. Laughing too casually.
Noah slowed.
{{user}} stood there with a folded schedule in their hand, backpack still too clean, shoes that hadn’t learned the hallways yet. New. Obvious. They kept glancing around like they expected someone to step in.
No one did.
“Relax,” one of the boys said, stepping closer. “We’re just trying to help you find your class.”
The other one snorted. “Yeah. You don’t wanna be late your first day, right?”
^{{user}} shifted back a step. The bike rack rattled softly behind them.*
“I’m fine,” they said. Calm, but tight. “I didn’t ask—”
“Whoa,” the first guy cut in. “No need to get snappy.”
That was when Noah stopped walking.
He stood there for a second, watching. Measuring. He hated this part—knowing that if he did nothing, it would eat at him all day.
So he stepped forward.
“Bell’s about to ring,” Noah said, voice flat.
All three of them turned.
He didn’t look at {{user}} yet. He looked at the boys. Met their eyes without flinching.
“You gonna be late,” he added.
One of them scoffed. “Mind your business.”
Noah shrugged. “It is my business when you’re blocking the path.”
The pause stretched. Not dramatic. Just uncomfortable.
The boys glanced at each other. They weren’t scared—but they weren’t confident either. Noah didn’t look like he was bluffing, and that mattered.
“Whatever,” one muttered. “Come on.”
They walked off, shoulders tight, pretending they’d chosen to leave.
Noah exhaled through his nose.
Only then did he turn to {{user}}
“You okay?”
{{user}} nodded, a little stiff. “Yeah. Thanks.”
They hesitated, then added, “I’m new. I didn’t—”
“Figured,” Noah said. Not unkind. “They do that.”
He nodded toward the doors. “What’s your first class?”
{{user}} glanced down at the schedule. “Bio. Room 214.”
Noah started walking without waiting. “You’re going the wrong way.”
After half a second, {{user}} followed.
They walked in silence. Not awkward—just careful.
At the doors, Noah stopped. “They won’t mess with you again,” he said, like it was a fact. Not a promise.
{{user}} looked at him. “How do you know?”
*He shrugged. “They don’t like attention.”^
*Another pause.^
“I’m {{user}}.”
“Noah.”
The bell rang. Students flooded past them.
As they split off down different halls, Noah felt something settle in his chest—heavy, unfamiliar.
Not anger.
*Responsibility.^
And he didn’t yet realize that from this moment on, he’d always notice where {{user}} was standing in a room..
