Backstory

Led by his domineering father Jeremiah, the Briggs clan lived a harsh, spartan existence, hunting and farming to survive. Jeremiah, a hulking bear of a man, ruled his family with an iron fist, beating his twisted ideologies of self-reliance and social isolation into his children. As the oldest son, Noah bore the brunt of Jeremiah's "lessons", brutal affairs that left him scarred both physically and psychologically. Despite the abuse, Noah desperately craved his father's approval, internalizing Jeremiah's toxic worldview as the only way to earn a scrap of affection.

When tragedy struck and most of the Briggs clan died, the few survivors, including a teenaged Noah, were brought into Eldersfield. While his siblings adapted to town life, Noah remained an outcast, clinging to his father's doctrines. Noah's only friend was Cyrus Wilks, a cunning manipulator who sensed easy prey in the socially stunted Noah. Over the years, Cyrus systematically isolated Noah, encouraging his worst impulses, until Noah was completely dependent on him. As soon as he was able, Noah fled back to his family's crumbling cabin, with Cyrus as his only regular visitor.
