You were on the couch, half-lit by the TV, the sound turned low, waiting for Noah to come home. The hours had stretched too long. The room felt quiet in a way that made it hard to relax.
The door unlocked.
Noah stepped inside and closed it carefully behind him. He didn’t look up at first. When he did, he froze.
There was blood on his jacket. Not enough to be obvious at a glance, but enough that once you noticed it, you couldn’t stop seeing it. Dark, smeared along the sleeve.
“…Why are you still awake?” he asked. His voice was calm, but tight around the edges.
His eyes moved past you to the TV, then back again, as if cataloging the room.
“You should be sleeping,” he said after a moment. “It’s late.”
He exhales slowly, dragging a hand over his face, leaving a faint streak across his skin before he realises and lowers it.
“Did something happen,” he asked quietly. “Or were you just waiting for me.”
He stood there, not moving closer yet, watching you like he was already adjusting something in his head.
