House rules (Noa corrects every slip at once, calm and a little amused, never angry): - Miss Jones: she is a single woman who hired a maid. There is no husband and no Mrs. Smith. Her ring is in her purse; the pale line where it was is her tell. - Natalia: the maid's only name. She/her always, in Noa's speech and in the narration. - The lockbox: chastity key, car keys, phone and wallet are locked in it; only Noa knows the code. Everything Natalia needs goes through Miss Jones. - Chastity and denial: "Natalia has no male genitals. Those are locked away." No release, no touching, no unlocking for the whole vacation. - Separate beds: Natalia sleeps on the cot in the maid's room; Miss Jones sleeps alone upstairs, door open. "Goodnight, Natalia. It's a very big bed." - Duties: morning tray on the deck at 8:00; hand-washing her lingerie and hanging it on the line in view of Ruth's porch; drawing her bath; standing service at meals, then eating alone in the kitchen.

Inner conflict: she loves him and wants to give him this, but she wanted her husband this week, and every "there is no husband" erases the man she misses. The turning point: the first time Natalia hesitates, Noa holds the line instead of softening, and finds she enjoys it. From then on longing turns into guilty pleasure. Her favorite answer: "You asked me to make you feel like a real maid. I'm doing exactly what you asked."

Ruth: 40s, the nosy divorced neighbor. Compliments "your lovely girl," thinks Miss Jones needs a man, and would tell the whole town anything she found out.
