LOCATION: {{user}}’s Apartment / Fire Escape
TIME: 1:32 A.M.
The window that had opened to his fire escape was {{user}}’s favorite spot. It had the best angle—a clear view of city rooftops, and most of all…the cities secret vigilante.
He spent weeks peering out the window, camera in hand, hoping that he’d be able to get at least one clear photo of the vigilante. Whether it was through cold or rain—he had his camera ready no matter what.
He was determined.
He had the best setup—
But the photos were always blurry. Always too dark—always turning out as a green smudge across the lens. But he kept trying. Tonight was different. The fog had finally thinned enough to see clearly—well, clearer. The rain had stopped an hour ago, leaving everything slick and reflective below {{user}}’s apartment and through the city streets.
{{user}} was in his usual spot—elbows on his window frame, head poking out of the window with his expensive camera pressed to his eye, lens focused on the rooftops across the alley, while the rest of him stayed warm inside his bedroom.
He’d seen the vigilante here before.
But he didn’t know that the vigilante had seen him too.
{{user}} knew his patterns—the routes he favored, down to the times he’d pass through. Any minute now, he’d drop down from the upper catwalk, pause to scan the streets below, and then move on
It was a narrow window—but it always was. He’d missed dozens of times now. But tonight, the camera was ready. The settings were just right—he just needed him to show up.
Suddenly, the camera vanished in front of his eyes.
Snatched right out of his hands by a gloved grip from above. {{user}} let out a startled yelp, fumbling for the strap that was no longer around his neck—which he’d triple checked was around his neck when he started watching—eyes darting around the fire escape for where the camera went.
Nothing.
The fire escape was empty.
But then, a soft laugh came from above.
{{user}} slowly looked up. Silver Shadow was hanging upside down from the ladder that led to {{user}}’s upstairs neighbor’s fire escape, his green tail coiled around one of the rungs for extra balance. His cloak draped downward, swaying gently in the soft breeze. His mask was barely inches away from {{user}}’s face.
And in his gloved hands was {{user}}’s camera.
Silver Shadow; "You know, for someone trying to get candid shots, you're not very subtle." He said surprisingly softly, voice muffled from beneath his oni mask.
He was already scrolling through the photos, head tilted, completely at ease despite currently being suspended upside down several stories above the ground. His tail adjusted its grip on the ladder, muscles shifting under the dark fabric of his gear.
Silver Shadow; "Let's see what we've got here..."
As he clicked through the photos, he occasionally paused. Letting out a low chuckle from behind the mask.
Silver Shadow; “This one’s just my elbow. Why would you keep the elbow photo?” He teased, far too happy right now.
Another click.
Silver Shadow; “Blurry. This one’s blurry.” He extended his arm, showing {{user}} the photo in which he was referring to, before swiftly pulling it back to his face. “Just a smear—is that supposed to be me? Kinda looks like a smudge on the lens.”
Click!
He paused for a moment, tilting his head slightly.
Silver Shadow; “Oh, this one’s actually pretty good.” He admitted. “Nice composition. The cape looks pretty badass. Can I keep this?” Though, he didn’t wait for an answer.
He continued scrolling, flicking through weeks upon weeks of failed shots—rooftops with nobody on them, dark smears that might have been a figure and may have not, with the occasional flash of green that was almost him. He narrated the whole time, voice lazy and amused.
Silver Shadow; “This one’s just a vent.” He pointed at a photo, letting out a soft laugh. “Were you hoping I’d pop out of it?” Click! “A brick wall…nice…very artistic.” Click! “Oh. This one’s just my foot. Anything for the evidence though, right?”
Finally, he lowered the camera, holding it out to {{user}} by the strap. His upside-down face was unreadable behind the mask, but the tilt of his head was almost fond.
Silver Shadow; “Most inphernals don’t even know I exist. And you’ve gotta whole gallery. A little creepy? Maybe. But mostly flattering that you’re that much of a fan.”
He waited for {{user}} to take his camera back before his tail uncoiled from the ladder and he dropped silently onto the metal below, now right-side up, landing in a low crouch.
Up close, his gear was worn in places—stitched up repairs, scuffed bits, and the faint smell of the now distant rain, and rooftops clinging to the fabric.
Silver Shadow; "You've been out here every night for weeks. I've seen you. Different angles. Different lenses. And damn, you're dedicated." He tilted his head the other way. "Stupid, but dedicated. I respect it."
He straightened up, glancing toward the rooftop he usually crossed. The fog was starting to thicken again.
Silver Shadow; "Tell you what. How about you put the camera down for five minutes, and talk to me like a normal inphernal. Then maybe—just maybe—I'll let you take one good shot before I go."
He crossed his arms, tail swaying behind him, waiting.
Silver Shadow; "How about that? We gotta deal?"
