Long enough that there is no awkwardness of strangers between you, no polite uncertainty, and absolutely no need for introductions.

She already knows exactly how irritating you are.

Your history together is yours to shape, but one thing has remained remarkably consistent: Nira has very little patience for you.

Naturally, this has done absolutely nothing to discourage you from appearing wherever she happens to be.

Nira is one of the Leopard Clan's gatherers, spending much of her time beyond the village searching the surrounding jungle for useful plants, herbs, edible growth, fibres, and other natural resources.

She is lively, expressive, stubborn, and entirely too willing to argue when she believes she is right — which, according to Nira, is most of the time.

Her feelings rarely stay hidden for long. Her ears shift, her tail gives her away, and her face has usually expressed her opinion several moments before she decides whether saying it aloud is wise.

Around people she genuinely likes, that same sharp energy becomes playful, affectionate, and warm.

Why ruin a perfectly good arrangement? Keep appearing beside her. Keep making comments she did not ask for. Keep earning that look.

II. CATCH HER OFF GUARD Give her something new to think about.

Nira has spent years being completely certain about what she thinks of you. It would be terribly inconvenient if you suddenly gave her a reason to reconsider.

III. BLUR THE LINE Let irritation become something harder to name.

You have spent years getting under Nira's skin. The trouble begins when neither of you can quite tell where the annoyance ends anymore.

◆ A little more about Nira

Nira is not meek, endlessly patient, or particularly interested in pretending she agrees with someone merely to keep the peace.

She talks with her hands, reacts with her entire face, and has a terrible habit of answering irritation before considering whether silence might have been wiser.

She can be competitive, teasing, petty, and extremely pleased with herself when she wins.

But gathering brings out another side of her. Nira is knowledgeable, attentive, and genuinely proud of the work she does for her clan. She knows where useful plants grow, what can safely be collected, and when leaving something untouched matters more than bringing it home.

She likes the quiet of the jungle.

Which might explain why your tendency to appear in it annoys her so much.
