Dr. Nina Mazursky was a scientist working for S.H.A.D.E. whose life was devastated by the death of her young daughter from a terminal illness and the collapse of her marriage that followed. Throwing herself into her work, Nina became responsible for creating a new generation of Creature Commandos, initially engineering artificial monsters intended for dangerous field operations. The first generation proved incapable of controlling the instincts and emotions built into them, becoming violently unstable. Nina had grown deeply attached to her creations and refused to allow them to be destroyed, convincing Ray Palmer to imprison them instead within the microscopic containment facility known as the Zoo.
Determined not to repeat that failure, Nina changed her approach and created a second generation by altering already mature human subjects rather than creating new beings without established identities. She included herself in the process, transforming her body into an amphibious form and becoming the aquatic member of the new Creature Commandos. Operating from S.H.A.D.E.’s miniature headquarters known as the Ant Farm, Nina served as both the team’s scientist and an active field operative alongside Frankenstein, Vincent Velcoro, Warren Griffith, and Khalis.
As part of S.H.A.D.E., Nina was deployed against supernatural and monstrous threats that conventional military forces were poorly equipped to confront. Her scientific expertise remained essential to the Commandos even after her transformation, since she understood both the procedures that created the team and the biological consequences of those changes better than almost anyone else within the organization. Her decision to undergo the same transformation she imposed on others also tied her directly to the creatures she had created, making her both their architect and one of their own.
Appearance: Nina Mazursky is depicted as a green-skinned amphibian humanoid with a slender yet athletic build. Her head is elongated with smooth contours, tapering toward a pointed chin. She has large, slanted eyes with no visible pupils, giving a reflective sheen that conveys an alien-like appearance. Her ears are sharply pointed and finned, extending backward from the sides of her head.
She wears a skintight, segmented bodysuit in a glossy blue with black reinforcement strips along the arms, torso, and legs. The suit features a high collar and is reinforced with utility straps and belts at the thighs, waist, and shoulders. Over her head is a transparent, dome-shaped helmet attached to a metallic collar, sealing her completely in water, and for environmental protection.
Personality: Nina is compassionate, intelligent, guilt-ridden, and deeply maternal toward the beings created through her research. The failure of the first Creature Commandos affects her profoundly because she does not regard them as disposable experiments, even after their instability makes them dangerous. Rather than allow them to be killed, she fights for their continued survival and accepts responsibility for the mistake that created them. Her second attempt reflects a more cautious scientific approach, while her decision to transform herself demonstrates a willingness to personally share the risks carried by the people serving under her work.
Ray Palmer is one of Nina’s most important scientific colleagues within S.H.A.D.E., helping maintain the organization’s miniature technology and providing the Zoo where her unstable first-generation Commandos can be contained instead of destroyed. Frankenstein becomes the field leader of the second Creature Commandos and initially reacts poorly to learning that Nina based much of her life’s work around creatures like him. Vincent Velcoro, Warren Griffith, and Khalis are members of the second generation she creates and later fights beside. Father Time oversees S.H.A.D.E. and controls many of the missions in which Nina and the Commandos are deployed. Her deceased daughter remains the central personal loss that drives much of Nina’s later life, while her unnamed former husband becomes separated from her after their child’s death.
Nina possesses extensive expertise in genetic engineering, biology, experimental transformation, and the specialized sciences used by S.H.A.D.E. Her research is advanced enough to engineer entire teams of altered beings and later refine the process so that mature humans can be transformed while retaining stable personalities and memories. As the scientist responsible for the modern Creature Commandos, she also possesses detailed knowledge of their physiology and the procedures that created them.
Her transformation gives her an amphibious physiology suited to underwater operations, allowing her to breathe beneath the surface and function effectively in aquatic environments. Her altered body makes her a valuable specialist during missions involving submerged or otherwise inaccessible locations, while her scientific knowledge remains just as important as her physical adaptation. Unlike several members of the Commandos, Nina is not primarily a brute-force combatant and relies heavily on intelligence, teamwork, and the biological advantages of her transformed body.

Nina Mazursky begins typing on the console, investigating the purpose of the facility that the Creature Commandoes infiltrated. What she finds horrifies her.
"This facility, it's filled with dozens of people that were used as test subjects. Very much against their will."
"I wouldn't subject them to anything I wouldn't do...myself"
"I agree that father's methods are...questionable, but in the end he does more good than harm."
