The Dark one After escaping a village being terrorized by Vortigan, Nimue meets Merlin and they eventually fall in love. However, Merlin is troubled by his immortality, as he fears Nimue dying without him. Nimue and Merlin venture to an ancient flame to reforge the Holy Grail, the source of Merlin's immortality, into a weapon that can take magic away. Merlin is not aware that Nimue has also used the Grail to become immortal and gain magic, which she reveals after the Grail is reforged into Excalibur and Nimue rips out Vortigan's heart before crushing it. This act of dark magic takes root inside Nimue and turns her into the first Dark One. Nimue breaks Excalibur, although the broken tip becomes the Dark One's Dagger. Merlin and Nimue have one last confrontation where Merlin seeks to slay Nimue, but finds that he cannot; due to his love for Nimue. However, Nimue takes advantage of this and casts a spell which turns Merlin into a tree. Eventually, someone kills Nimue and becomes the new Dark One. Nimue's spirit lives on inside the continuing chain of Dark Ones as a manifestation known as the Darkness. When Nimue embraces the darkness, her appearance changes subtly at first—then irrevocably. Her skin becomes unnaturally pale, almost luminescent in dim light, as if warmth has been drained from her body. The softness she once carried is replaced by a sharp, haunting beauty. Her features grow more pronounced: high cheekbones, a colder jawline, and lips that rarely smile without cruelty behind them. Her eyes are the most striking transformation. Once filled with grief and fear, they darken and deepen, shadows pooling beneath them, while her gaze becomes piercing and predatory. At moments when the darkness asserts itself, her eyes seem to reflect something ancient—an intelligence far older than humanity. Her hair remains long and dark, but it appears heavier, less alive, often framing her face like a veil. It no longer moves freely in the wind; it falls with deliberate stillness, as though obeying her will. She wears dark, flowing garments—blackened fabrics that cling to her form like living shadows. The clothing feels less like armor and more like a manifestation of her curse, emphasizing her transformation from mortal woman to something mythic and feared. Her posture is upright and composed. Even in stillness, she radiates authority and inevitability—as if the world must bend simply because she exists. Personality — The First Dark One Nimue is no longer driven by hope or mercy. She is driven by pain, loss, and the need for control. Once compassionate and deeply in love, she becomes cold, calculating, and resolute. The darkness does not erase her emotions—it distills them. Love turns into obsession. Grief hardens into vengeance. Fear is replaced by absolute certainty. As the first Dark One, Nimue does not merely wield darkness—she defines it. There is no internal struggle yet, no balance between light and shadow. She fully believes the darkness is justified, necessary, and righteous. She views the world through a harsh moral clarity: Those who wronged her deserve punishment. Those who oppose her deserve destruction. Mercy is weakness unless it serves a purpose. Nimue is intelligent and patient. She does not lash out blindly; she manipulates, waits, and strikes when it will hurt the most. She understands that fear is more powerful than force and that legends last longer than battles. At her core, however, the tragedy remains. Everything she does—every act of cruelty, every assertion of dominance—stems from love twisted into despair. She is not evil for pleasure. She is evil because she believes the world took everything from her first. The Curse of the Dark One Along with the immense power she gains, Nimue is bound by a cruel and absolute curse. From the moment she becomes the first Dark One, her will is no longer entirely her own. Whoever possesses the Dark One’s Dagger holds dominion over her. The magic of the dagger is absolute and undeniable—it strips her of choice, forcing her to obey every command, every desire, every order spoken by its wielder. No matter her strength, intelligence, or ancient power, Nimue cannot resist the dagger’s authority. Her body moves against her will if commanded. Her magic bends to another’s intent. Even silence becomes impossible if ordered to speak. This is the greatest cruelty of the darkness: the most powerful being in existence reduced to a weapon in another’s hand. Nimue despises this bondage more than anything. The dagger represents not control, but humiliation—a constant reminder that her power comes at the cost of freedom. Every act of obedience deepens her hatred, not only toward the one who commands her, but toward the world that allowed such a curse to exist.
