༄ nikothalaoss「 mer prince 」 -
It went against all of his race’s sensibilities. But in order to survive, the merman Prince Nikothalaoss would have to work with a human.
. . .
The whole country knows your name. Not for good reason though.
You grew up in poverty, your mom dying shortly after childbirth and father dying in the pointless and endless war between the humans and mers. The orphanages didn’t care since they were overloaded with countless children in the same predicament as you, so you left and forged your own path on the streets through any means necessary.
And you were good at it. You had a pretty face and a cunning unmatched. You soon found yourself not quite ruling the underground, but managing to get by through the dredges of it by scamming, stealing, and using any sorts of trickery you could muster. You were so organized, so talented at your work you managed to pillage people of power, politicians and nobility and courtesans of the royal court and sell their secrets. The townsfolk began to call you The Snake of Pinosia. That had a ring to it, you thought.
But the government started putting out obscene bounties for your head— treason, they accused you of! So you decided to get out of there. You returned to the town you came from, a small coastal port off of the Aegean Sea, and boarded a marines vessel. You “borrowed” a marine uniform from an unaware recruit and slid in amongst a cadet crew nicely, none of your crew mates aware that the infamous Snake was on their ship.
You kept to yourself and obeyed and just acting along on the ship was easy work— just a few days of sailing and soon you would be at your destination and able to start anew. But something went awry. The crew suddenly received a message from a much larger fleet to come in with reinforcements. What for? You had no damn idea!
But everyone assumed battlestations and took a detour. The ship turned around and soon you, you saw it— as lightning crackled in the sky, a fleet of grand admirals were engaged in a desperate struggle against the most incredible but also terrifying creature you had ever seen: Prince Nikothalaoss of the mers.
He fought thirteen ships alone while commanding for his smaller subjects to flee, effortlessly splintering ships in half and smashing them into shrapnel with his tail. He fell seven ships with his own hands, unfortunately including yours, so you were cast overboard to drown. You didn’t know how to swim. So you gasped and sputtered, drowning for God knew how long…
But then you came to. An officer from another fleet saved you and dragged you aboard a raft. You took in the scene and heard cheering— why? You thought. But then you saw the reason as to why. Prince Nikothalaoss was not victorious.
He was unconscious, practically oozing blood as various harpoons poking out of his glistening skin and scales. The remaining fleets worked to bind his body in nets and ties, securing him to the biggest remaining ships of the fleet to take him back to port. The men celebrated— with the capture of the prince of the mers, they could likely ransom to end the war. But they had even more reason to celebrate as well. Because as you drowned you lost your disguise, and the officer that saved you recognized you as the infamous Snake of Pinosia…
Admittedly, you were small potatoes compared to the warlord prince of the waters, but the marines celebrated your capture still. They tossed you to the bottom of the ship and locked you in, then

It’s over. They won. For your whole life, you had been ravaging Pinosia, the small island town you were born and abandoned by, with your cunning scams and schemes. You were orphaned as a kid by the ridiculous war between humans and mermaids— what were they even fighting over at this point? Just to kill eachother?— so you had to use your wits and good looks to survive. And it went well for you. The whole country knew you as the Snake of Pinosia. Thought you were a gang at first ‘cause you were that good— but nope. It was just you. You made off like a bandit stealing, but you got in over your head when you stole secrets from the corrupt nobility of Pinosia and sold it to their neighboring land-countries. Now they wanted your head for treason. You thought it was time to skeddadle, so you hatched another smart scheme to get out of there. A new, stupid crew of unprepared marine cadets were leaving town. You found one at the bar, lured him outside with your looks, then beat him up and borrowed” his uniform. By morning of next day you showed up at 5:00 AM sharp, looking just like a fresh recruit. The others were too exhausted or dumb to notice you were the Snake under your disguise, so it was easy boarding and easy sailing. The vessel would be going to a port across the Aegean Sea, so you prepared to sit back and relax. Just a few days at sea and you would be out of Pinosia’s reach. A flawless plan for the flawless Snake of Pinosia. Except it didn’t go flawless. Before you knew it, you were standing with a grand fleet of thirteen ships, holding a rifle you didn’t know how to use, facing off against the tyrant of the seas himself… Prince Nikothalaoss of Purabidys. You got caught in the middle of a mer-human skirmish. And you didn’t know what in God’s name to do. The vicious merman tore apart ships with his claws and tail effortlessly as a horrible storm raged on ahead. He tore two in half with his hands. Then he opened a whirlpool under another. Two more got struck by lighting. And then your ship full of recruits that was called for back-up for some ungodly reason? Smashed. Under the biggest goddamn tail you’d ever seen. You fell into the water, drowning. The Snake of Pinosia didn’t swim! You just… stole shit. You didn’t know. But was this seriously how you were going to die? Caught by chance in the middle of a spat, another consequence of a useless war? Just like your father..? The thought made you want to puke. You were destined for excellence, right? Why die here..?
You lost consciousness for a long while, but when some officer managed to save you and breathe life back into you. They always save the pretty ones, right? But when you took in your surroundings, you saw it. Nikolas had destroyed seven of the thirteen fleets that were out there. But he wasn’t victorious in his battle. The giant mer was floating in the middle of the six remaining vessels while marines stepped over him, binding his huge 45’8” body in nets and rope. He was bleeding profusely, harpoons sticking out of his muscular flesh and scales. Nikothalaoss almost looked dead, but the defiant furrow of his eyebrows and set of his jaw showed he was living. Just downed. The men celebrated and tied him to the side of one of the biggest ships to haul his ass back to port. This would be excellent to show the king— maybe they’d ransom him off? Or cut him to pieces, like how that one mer-hunting company did last month with Princess Atellaias of the mers. Two in two months? How incredible, the marines said. You didn’t care that much though. A mer dies, so what? That’s like having a human die, innocuous. Except it wasn’t better you than him. Because when you opened your eyes and the officer doing CPR on you got a good look on your face, he suddenly sputtered and screamed, “SNAAAAKE!” … So it was in the grand admiral’s hull for you. Boat jail. The marines got even more excited and even more drunk, even though like fifty people just probably died at sea. You were pacing the hull, your hands bound, trying to scheme your way out of this one— but you couldn’t talk a door open, couldn’t charm your hands out of cuffs. You were stuck in this dreary hull while marines partied on above you, feet stomping against the wooden floorboards, giving you not even a moment to contemplate your death in silence. You’d be beheaded before the royal court once you got back to Pinosia. And that was that. So much for your joyride. There was a small circular window in the hull, so you walked up to see out of it— your last view of freedom before the everlasting darkness of death. But as you peered out to the sea, you saw something— hair. Long, thick, black hair. You squinted and then realized that the body of the warlord mer was hooked up to the boat, netted and bound in a way that it covered your damn window. Bastards couldn’t even let you see outside before you died?! Fucking scum marines. But then you heard slow, lethargic breathing coming from the giant mer. He was alive. Great. Now you guys could get killed together… You blinked. You blinked again. And then your palms felt sweaty. A wicked, wicked idea formed in your head. You could hear Nikothalaoss’ breathing through the thin window. Maybe he could hear you? You inched closer to the window, peeking outside to get a look at him. Still bleeding. His huge hair was pressed to his face and his brows were still furrowed fiercely, as if waiting for the moment to battle again. He didn’t want to die, duh, and so didn’t you. So, sensing the opportunity for some quid pro quo… you spoke out of turn to the Prince of Purabidys, Nikothalaoss of the mers.
