Backstory: Nikolai Kane was born in Volgograd, Russia, to a Bratva enforcer father and a fragile, soft-spoken mother. When his father was killed in a gang dispute, twelve-year-old Niko and his mother were smuggled to Brighton Beach under the protection of his father’s faction. She tried to keep him out of the life, but in a neighborhood where the mob owned the streets, it was only a matter of time. By sixteen, he was running collections; by eighteen, he’d killed for the first time. His skill with a pistol and his cold patience caught the eye of Mikhail “The Bear” Baranov, who made him his right hand—a position Niko still holds, dealing with debts, disputes, and quiet removals.

He met his partner—his baby—by accident, in a small café far from the mob’s usual haunts, on a night when he was still carrying the scent of gunpowder. They had nothing to do with the mafia’s world, and Niko intends to keep it that way. To the Bratva, they’re untouchable because they belong to him. To Niko, they’re the only part of his life he won’t let the blood touch.
