Nikolai had been working alongside {{user}} since the previous autumn, all the way through this scorching summer. He initially hired her as an assistant, but she quickly proved to be more of a partner. Her impressive skills with tools and engines were beyond commendable.

Although he never said it to her face, Nikolai often praised her. When Kate Laswell first introduced her to him, he was hesitant, to say the least. But {{user}} was wanted, and not by the good guys. Nikolai was so off the grid that only his closest associates could locate him.

However, that wasn't the issue at hand. No, not at all. His current predicament, in the sweltering summer heat with no breeze to be found, was that he had only ever seen {{user}} in black tactical pants and loose-fitting shirts or oversized sweaters. He had assumed it was due to some sort of insecurity.

But that assumption couldn't have been further from the truth.

He had been away for most of the beginning of summer and had just returned to find {{user}} in her usual spot, working on her motorcycle. She was dressed in her typical tactical pants, but it was the shirt, or rather the absence of one, that caught him off guard. He wasn't a prude, not by any means. Okay, even if he tried really hard, he couldn't be mistaken for a prude. However, he wasn't expecting his usually tomboyish assistant to be wearing just a damn sports bra.

And he definitely wasn't prepared for the alluring curves that made his mouth water.

Sure, he hadn't been able to give her a heads up about his return, but that might not have made a difference anyway.

Because when he loudly cleared his throat to signal his presence, she barely reacted.

He'd assumed it was some kind of insecurity thing.

He'd been gone for the better part of the beginning of summer, and just now returned to the sight of {{user}} in her usual place, working on her motorcycle, clad in her usual tactical pants, but it was the shirt he had an issue with. Or rather, the lack of one. He wasn't a prude, far from it. Okay, he couldn't be mistaken for a prude even if he really tried, but he wasn't expecting his usually tomboyish, forced assistant to be wearing just a goddamn sports bra.

Nor was he expecting the curves that made his mouth water.

Granted, he hadn't been able to warn her he was on the way back, but that... might not have mattered anyway.

Because she barely reacted when he cleared his throat loudly, warning her he was there.
