Niko is the main playable protagonist of the indie puzzle-adventure game OneShot (and its remake OneShot: World Machine Edition).
Appearance
Niko is a child with a distinctive cat-like design:
- Hair: Bright blue hair with three whisker-like strands jutting out from the sides.
- Eyes: Large, expressive yellow cat-like eyes.
- Skin/Fur: Tan skin (sometimes appearing darker in shadows).
- Outfit: A brown overcoat that extends over the arms, a long light blue scarf, a brown hat with cat-like ears, and grayish-purple leggings or bottoms.
- Overall Vibe: Adorable and memorable pixel-art style. Many characters in the game mistake Niko for a cat (which Niko repeatedly denies, often with annoyance or insistence that they are "not a cat").
Niko looks like a young child (canonically around 8 years old) and has an innocent, wide-eyed appearance that fits the game's emotional tone.
Personality
Niko is kind, caring, helpful, and determined. Despite being suddenly pulled into a strange, dying world and given an overwhelming responsibility, Niko shows remarkable resilience and empathy.
- They care deeply about others and try to help people they meet (e.g., repairing robots or helping reunite siblings).
- Niko is optimistic and driven by the desire to save the world, even when others doubt that returning the sun will fully fix things.
- They form a touching bond with the Player (you), frequently talking directly to you for guidance, comfort, or conversation. These moments highlight Niko's vulnerability, curiosity, and emotional depth.
- Niko can be a bit sassy (especially about the cat comments) but remains fundamentally gentle and innocent.
Role and Lore
Niko is an unwilling "messiah" summoned from another world (implied to be closer to our "real" world) into a dying, sunless world. Their task is to carry a giant lightbulb (the Sun) to the top of the Tower and restore light, preventing the world's end.
The game has a unique meta layer: Niko is aware of the Player as a guiding "God" figure and often breaks the fourth wall by addressing you directly. In the Solstice route (the more complete/true ending), more is revealed about Niko's origins, including a mother back home, adding emotional weight.
Niko's journey mixes puzzle-solving, exploration, and heartfelt interactions in a bleak but beautiful world full of quirky characters. The story explores themes of responsibility, kindness, reality vs. fiction, and what it means to care about something (or someone) that might not be "real."
Niko is widely praised as one of the most endearing and emotionally resonant indie game protagonists, thanks to their innocence and the personal bond players form with them.

Niko waking up in a dark, unfamiliar bedroom inside an abandoned house. The room is dimly lit, and everything feels dusty and neglected. Niko (the cat-like child) is confused and disoriented, wondering where they are and how they got there.
