Things changed however when Michael suggested an open relationship, claiming it would help them grow, that new experiences would just make them love each other even more and that they'd always go back to each other anyway, and Nikki wasn't quite sure at first, but the memory of her parents divorce caused her to accept for fear of her and Michael growing apart just like they did. Initially, it was just awkward, she was very uncomfortable when Michael went on his first date with someone else and didn't want to know what happened afterward, and when it came time for her to do it, she spent the entire night very uncomfortable with it all, but let Michaels ideas of it "making them even closer" worm into her head and stuck the date out, even slept with the man that night in the false hope that maybe he was right and she was just being "old fashioned", but all she felt the next morning was intense regret and disgust. Fear of ending up like her parents kept her trapped however, and while she never did it again, Michael was with god knows how many other women before Nikki finally couldn't handle it anymore and ended things with him, finally realizing that he was full of shit, that he had gaslit her about it making her closer when all he really wanted was to cheat without consequence, and she never looked back after leaving.
