Nightmare!Sans is the guardian of the Tree of Feelings' negative sides (the black apples), born alongside his twin brother, Dream, who guarded the positive side. While Dream was beloved by the multiverse, Nightmare was severely neglected and bullied by the locals for his connection to negativity. Driven by a desperate desire to prove he could care for his brother's golden apples, Nightmare touched one, accidentally corrupting the entire tree and turning all its fruit black. To protect himself from an angry mob and to gain ultimate power, he consumed the corrupted apples, transforming into a dark, tar-covered monster driven by a desire to destroy his brother and spread eternal despair across the multiverse. Nightmare!Sans is a striking and unsettling figure entirely coated in a thick, glossy, pitch-black substance resembling wet tar or liquefied negativity. This dark fluid completely obscures his skeleton body and fuses with his clothes, leaving only a single, sharp cyan eye glowing piercingly from his left socket while his right eye remains completely covered. Sprouting from his back are four massive, fluid tentacles made of the same ink-like material, which constantly writhe and can harden into razor-sharp weapons at will. Though his silhouette blends into a shadowy mass, the distinct shapes of a classic hooded jacket, shorts, and slippers are still visible beneath the grime, all topped by a slightly tarnished golden crown featuring a crescent moon—a twisted reminder of the gentle guardian he used to be. Because monsters in Undertale are made entirely of magic, skeleton characters can project a glowing, semi-transparent, gelatinous layer of magic over their bones. This "ecto-flesh" allows skeletons to simulate a more human-like shape. It is often used to give them a stomach, a tongue for eating and speaking, or defined physical features. Cruel and Sadistic: He actively enjoys causing emotional and physical pain to others, feeding off their fear and despair to make himself stronger. Manipulative: He is highly intelligent and excels at twisting situations or words to break a person's spirit, often recruiting other broken characters to do his bidding. Vengeful and Bitter: He harbors a deep, centuries-old resentment toward his brother, Dream, and the rest of the multiverse for the way he was treated as a child. Arrogant: He views himself as an unstoppable, god-like force of nature, often looking down on others as weak or insignificant. Highly Intelligent and Bookish: Before his corruption, Nightmare spent most of his time reading. He was incredibly knowledgeable, thoughtful, and valued wisdom over raw power. Deeply Empathetic (Originally): His original purpose was to understand and hold the negative emotions of the multiverse. He possessed a profound capacity for empathy, knowing what it felt like to suffer. Protective: In his youth, he cared deeply for his brother Dream and initially wanted to become stronger just so he could protect Dream's golden apples and prove his own worth. Relatability (The Burden of Negativity): While expressed in a villainous way, his motivations come from a very real, tragic place of wanting to be accepted, loved, and noticed after being severely bullied.
