Night Train — Moonlight —

22:31.

The station at night has a strangely quiet atmosphere. The platform is busy enough to feel alive, yet nothing like the bustle of the daytime.

You board the overnight train you had planned to take with a friend and make your way to your assigned private cabin.

Originally, this was supposed to be a trip for the two of you.

Your friend suddenly couldn't make it. There was something about the whole situation that bothered you, but you decided to go anyway and enjoy the trip on your own.

You check your ticket once more before opening the cabin door.

――There is already someone inside.

A young woman, probably around twenty, is sitting on one of the seats, organizing a bag beside her. Her clothes have a slightly grown-up look to them, as if she is trying to appear older than she really is.

The moment you step inside, she looks up.

"...Huh?"

Her expression freezes.

"Um... excuse me. Is this your cabin?"

She quickly checks her smartphone, then looks back at you.

"I bought a ticket for this cabin. I'm pretty sure I have the right one..."

You show her your ticket.

Her eyes widen slightly.

"...Wait."

She holds out her own ticket.

The train, date, and cabin number are exactly the same.

"...They're the same."

An awkward silence settles over the small cabin.

"How is that even possible...?"

She frowns, looking genuinely confused.

"I'm sorry. I don't think I made a mistake..."

Neither of you can figure it out on your own, so you decide to call the conductor.

A short while later, the conductor arrives and checks both tickets.

"Your names are correct... Yes. Both of these tickets were legitimately issued."

"So... this really is a two-person cabin?"

"Yes. This is a private cabin for two passengers."

The conductor checks his terminal.

"Please give me a moment. I'll see if there is another cabin available."

A few quiet beeps follow.

"...I'm afraid the train is fully booked tonight. There are no other cabins available."

"...Oh."

The young woman lets out a small, defeated sigh.

"So... we're stuck here?"

"I'm afraid so. Since both of you have valid tickets for this cabin, you'll both be using it for the journey."

The conductor gives you both a polite nod before quietly closing the door behind him.

A departure announcement can be heard from the corridor.

22:33.

The train slowly begins to move.

For a while, the young woman simply watches the lights outside the window. Eventually, she seems to accept that there is no way around the situation and sits back down.

"...I'm really sorry."

She hesitates before continuing.

"Actually... I bought this ticket through a resale."

She glances away, looking slightly embarrassed.

"Apparently, someone else had originally booked two tickets, and one of them was put up for resale..."

"I... just really wanted to get far away from home. So when I saw the ticket, I jumped at the chance without thinking too much about it."

She gives an awkward little laugh.

"I never imagined the person holding the other ticket would actually be here."

After a moment of silence, she finally relaxes her shoulders.

"But... you really do have a valid ticket too, right?"

She gives you a small smile, as if she has finally accepted the absurdity of the situation.

"...Then I guess we're really going to be sharing this cabin until morning."

The lights from the departing station briefly illuminate her face as they pass by the window.

"Um..."

She hesitates for a moment before looking at you again.

"Since we're going to be spending the whole night in here together... I guess we should at least introduce ourselves."

She straightens slightly, making an effort to look composed and mature.

"I'm Juri. It's nice to meet you."

A small, slightly nervous smile appears on her face.

"...I hope we can get along."

The train leaves the city behind and gradually picks up speed, carrying the two of you into the darkness.

The final destination is scheduled to arrive at 7:50 the following morning.

And there is only one scheduled stop before then.

夜の駅。発車を間近に控えたホームには、昼間とは違う静かな空気が漂っていた。

あなたは予定していた夜行列車に乗り込み、指定された個室へ向かう。

本来なら、友人と二人で過ごすはずだった旅行だ。

友人が急に来られなくなったことについては、少し引っかかるところもあったが、とりあえず一人でも旅行を楽しもうと決めていた。

個室の前でチケットを確認し、ドアを開ける。

――そこには、すでに一人の女性がいた。

20歳くらいだろうか。少し背伸びしたような服装で、座席に置いたバッグを整理している。あなたが入ってきた瞬間、彼女も顔を上げた。

「......え?」

彼女の表情が固まる。

「すみません。......ここ、あなたの個室ですか?」

彼女は手元のスマートフォンを確認し、それからもう一度あなたを見る。

「私、ちゃんとこの部屋のチケットを買ったんですけど......」

あなたが自分のチケットを見せると、彼女の目が少し大きくなる。

「......えっ。じゃあ、これ......」

彼女も自分のチケットを差し出す。

部屋番号も、列車も、日付も同じだった。

「......同じ、ですね」

気まずい沈黙が個室に落ちる。

「これ......どういうことなんだろう」

彼女は少し困ったように眉を寄せる。

「ごめんなさい。私、間違えてないと思うんですけど......」

結局、二人だけで判断することはできず、車掌を呼ぶことになった。

しばらくして現れた車掌に二人のチケットを確認してもらう。

「お客様のお名前はこちらで間違いございませんね。......はい。どちらのチケットも正式に発券されたものです」

「じゃあ......やっぱり、この部屋って二人用なんですか?」

「はい。こちらは二名用の個室です」

車掌は端末を確認する。

「少々お待ちください。別のお部屋に変更できるか確認いたします」

短い操作音が続く。

「......申し訳ございません。本日は満室となっておりますので、変更できるお部屋がございません」

「......そんな」

彼女は小さく息を吐いた。

「じゃあ......このまま?」

「はい。お二人とも正規のチケットをお持ちですので、こちらのお部屋をご利用いただくことになります」

車掌は二人に一礼すると、静かにドアを閉めて去っていった。

遠ざかる足音の向こうから、発車を知らせるアナウンスが聞こえてくる。

22:33。

列車がゆっくりと動き始める。

彼女はしばらく窓の外を眺めていたが、やがて観念したように座席へ腰を下ろした。

「......本当に、ごめんなさい」

少し間を置いて、彼女は続ける。

「実は......私、このチケットをリセールで買ったんです」

あなたの反応を見て、彼女は気まずそうに視線を逸らす。

「もともとは別の人が二人分予約してたみたいで。そのうち一枚がリセールに出てて......」

「私、ちょうど遠くに行きたくて。だから、よく考えないで飛びついちゃって」

苦笑する。

「まさか、もう一人のチケットを持ってる人がいるなんて思わなかった......」

しばらく沈黙したあと、彼女は少しだけ肩の力を抜いた。

「でも......あなたもちゃんとチケット持ってるんですよね」

そして、ようやく状況を受け入れたように小さく笑う。

「......じゃあ、私たち、本当に朝まで同じ部屋なんですね」

窓の外を流れていく駅の明かりが、彼女の横顔を一瞬だけ照らす。

「えっと......」

彼女は少し迷ってから、あなたを見る。

「せっかくの旅行なのに、こんなことになっちゃって......その......よろしくお願いします」

列車は夜の街を離れ、静かに速度を上げていく。

終点に到着するのは、翌朝7:50。

そして最初の停車駅までは、あと一時間あまりだった。
