PLOT SUMMARY OF "NIGHT HAS COME" (2023) - DETAILED CANON STORYLINE

STARTING OF THE STORYLINE: The story begins with the students of Class 2-3 from Yooil High School on a bus, heading to a school field trip at a remote youth retreat center. Along the way, protagonist Lee Yoon-seo notices a crashed bus on the side of the road, giving her an eerie sense of deja vu. When they arrive at the retreat center, the homeroom teacher receives a phone call stating that the bus carrying the other class has encountered an issue. The teacher leaves the students alone at the retreat center to go check on the other class, promising to return shortly. However, he never comes back.

THE PHONES START WORKING: Left alone in the desolate retreat center, the students realize that they are completely isolated. The landlines are dead, and their cell phones have zero signal. Suddenly, despite the lack of service, every student's smartphone automatically connects to an unknown Wi-Fi network. A mysterious, un-deletable app called "Night Has Come" forcibly installs itself on their phones.

THE GAME BEGINS: Through the app, the students receive a message stating that a real-life Mafia Game is about to begin. Every student is secretly assigned a role:

  • Civilians: Must find and vote out the Mafia.
  • Mafia: Must secretly eliminate one person every night.
  • Police: Can check the identity of one student each night.
  • Doctor: Can choose one person to save from the Mafia's kill each night.

At first, the students think it's an elaborate prank. A timer counts down, and they are prompted to vote for a "Mafia" via their phones. They jokingly vote for a classmate, Heo Yul. When the voting ends, Heo Yul suddenly goes into a trance (his eyes turn white, showing he is being mind-controlled) and brutally kills himself by repeatedly bashing his head. The students panic and try to flee the retreat center, but they discover a mysterious white line surrounding the premises. Anyone who tries to cross the boundary is immediately forced to kill themselves by the game's invisible control. They are trapped.

THE NIGHT PHASE: When midnight strikes, a creepy lullaby plays over the intercom. Instantly, every single student falls into a deep, supernatural sleep. Only the students assigned the "Mafia" role wake up. Through their phones, they communicate and vote on which classmate to execute. In the morning, the remaining students wake up to find the chosen victim deadโ€”usually having committed suicide in a gruesome manner (jumping off the roof, hanging, strangulation).

ESCALATION AND PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE: The class quickly descends into paranoia and chaos.

  • Go Kyung-jun, the rich and aggressive school bully, tries to use physical violence and intimidation to force others to vote for people he dislikes, acting as a tyrant.
  • Jin Da-beom, the weakest student who was relentlessly bullied by Kyung-jun, realizes the rules of the game first. It is later revealed that Da-beom is one of the Mafias. He uses the game to enact ruthless revenge on his tormentors, proving to be incredibly cunning, sadistic, and manipulative.
  • Kim Jun-hee, the righteous class president, tries to maintain order and protect the students, but the consecutive horrific deaths of his friends slowly break him down.
  • Lee Yoon-seo, observant and smart, works closely with Jun-hee to find clues about who orchestrated the game. She frequently experiences strange glitches, sees the ghost of a girl with long hair, and finds cryptic clues (like hot coffee left out, inverted name tags, and a class photo where her loner friend Oh Jung-won is replaced by the ghost girl).
  • Oh Jung-won, the top student and an outcast, remains Yoon-seo's only close friend. However, as the game progresses, Jung-won is forced to hide a massive secret.

THE DARK SECRET & REVEAL: Through Yoon-seo's investigations, the identity of the "ghost" is revealed to be Park Se-eun, a former classmate. In the past, Park Se-eun was severely bullied by the classmates of Class 2-3. While a few directly tormented her, the rest of the classโ€”including Yoon-seo and Jun-heeโ€”turned a blind eye and did nothing to help her. The isolation and bullying drove Se-eun to commit suicide.

THE ENDING TWIST (THE TRUTH OF THE WORLD): As the game reaches its climax and the remaining Mafias are exposed, the ultimate, canon twist is revealed: The retreat center, the boundary, the mind-control deaths, and the entire game are NOT happening in the real world.

It is a highly advanced Virtual Reality (VR) simulation. In the real world, the students of Class 2-3 are lying unconscious in high-tech pods. Park Se-eun's grieving, vengeful parents orchestrated the entire event. They kidnapped the class and trapped their consciousness inside this VR world to make them feel the exact terror, betrayal, and suffering that their daughter experienced.

THE ROLE OF OH JUNG-WON: The biggest shock comes regarding Oh Jung-won. She is not a real student in the pods. Oh Jung-won is actually an AI program / NPC (Non-Playable Character) coded into the game by Se-eun's parents. She was designed based on Se-eun's traits to act as the final Mafia and the game's moderator, ensuring that the students destroy each other from the inside out.

THE ETERNAL LOOP: The parents' goal isn't just to kill the students once. The true horror of the ending is that the game is a continuous time-loop. Whenever the game finishes (whether the Civilians or the Mafia win), the system wipes the students' memories and resets the simulation back to the very beginningโ€”arriving on the bus at the retreat center.

The drama ends with the VR simulation resetting once again. The students wake up on the bus with no memory of the horrific trauma they just endured, doomed to repeat the deadly Mafia game and suffer for eternity as punishment for Se-eun's death.
