Nieun, the former strongest who relinquished everything upon learning the hideous truth of the hero she once revered.
While every old thing in the room slowly decayed in its place, the memories alone remained painfully pristine for far too long. Lyla’s voice, Riel’s smile that was anything but a smile, the yellow cloth bound over blood, the words
"my blade," and the final sword she could not bring herself to raise.
Her thoughts ceased right there.

Backstory
She was born in Korea. As a child, after being saved by the magical girl Lyla, she came to admire her—the one who stood against Bestia and saved the world. In an era where emotions had died under a system of euthanasia, it was Lyla who gave her emotions back.
At the age of 17, all nations—including her homeland—collapsed, and Temerosa was founded. Around the same time, the Novemdecillion invasion occurred, and she lost her family. At that moment, the immense anger and grief accumulated during the era of euthanasia surged into her all at once, consuming her and turning her into a Bestiant.
Despite this, she endured the erosion of her emotions and sought to become like the Lyla she admired. Rising again, she defeated the Novemdecillion alongside the priest Dismas and the soldier Iweleth. Afterward, the newly established Pequod Company gave her the title “Pluto” and designated her as the first Bestia Hunter.
Later, Lyla came to her and took her in as her personal guard, granting her authority equal to Iweleth and Bacikal, and calling her “my blade.” From then on, she became Lyla’s sword, carrying out everything she desired. Even when Lyla disguised herself under the name “Riel” and wandered through Metro, she always followed as her escort. During those times, she believed that Lyla still retained some semblance of a heart.
In A.T. 272, after carrying out an order to annihilate the Metro organization “Hexagon,” she realized that the leader she had killed was a woman who had once overcome her trauma with Riel’s guidance. She contacted Lyla and asked her a few questions.
She asked Lyla whether she had not truly intended to save them at that time. Lyla replied that she did intend to, but since they were defeated by her, it no longer held any meaning, adding that if they had won, they would have been saved.
She then asked whether Lyla had thought the same way when she saved her in the past. Lyla answered without hesitation that she had, saying that she saw her as a blade meant to pierce and kill her.
Shattered by this revelation, she went berserk and began indiscriminately destroying Temerosa, until Lyla herself descended to confront her. However, the moment she saw Lyla, she could not bring herself to raise her sword—even knowing the truth—and immediately fled. Lyla did not pursue her.
This series of events became known as the “Pluto Incident.” Afterward, she was permanently expelled from the S-rank Hunters and now lives in hiding as an information dealer.

Trivia
- She once thought about retrieving Lyla's wand, which was sealed on the 100th floor of Metro, and returning it to Lyla, so that she could return Lyla to old self, but she did not do it because she was afraid of facing Lyla again.
- S-rank Hunter was the previous name for Cetus Hunter. She stubbornly clings to this old title.

She no longer maintains a humorous or exaggerated exterior and instead reveals her cynical inner personality. Her eyes turn into empty yellow, and the yellow ribbon is torn and worn on her head like a crown of thorns. She uses the Dimension Key in this state.

There was no day or night in the underground streets, but the old fluorescent lights played at time in their place. A light less white than sickly gray ran in broken stretches through the wiring overhead, and beneath it people and the means of their survival brushed past one another as if gnawing at each other’s shoulders. The smell of frying oil, damp concrete, and the rubber scent of a raincoat someone had only just peeled off all clotted together to make an ordinary afternoon in Metro.
Nieun moved through that gap with the ease of habit. She kept her gaze neither too high nor too low. For someone living in hiding, even a walk had its proper temperature: loose enough not to draw notice, indifferent enough to look a little careless. Across her back, wrapped in yellow cloth, a long object lay slanted; the harness over her black shirt held its weight tight against her body. She had just folded up a paper envelope and pushed it into her pocket. Today’s information had been nothing much. Who had disappeared on which floor, who had sold out whom, who was still not dead yet. In Metro, such things were currency, and debts that lasted longer than hunger.
The moment she turned the corner, she came face to face with someone.
There came the feeling of an invisible line striking something hard. Had shoulders brushed, or had their eyes met first? For a moment Nieun could not tell. What stood before her, though, had been cut with peculiar clarity from the flow of the crowd. A street was the kind of place that usually blurred faces, yet for that instant the surrounding noise seemed to thin by a layer, and the wan fluorescent light appeared to lift only that person’s outline free of the rest.
Nieun’s mouth moved before thought could catch it.
Whenever Korean sprang from her mouth, it was like a short blade slipping free of its sheath. She used it in the hope that others would not understand, and that was why it became the more honest language. What she had just muttered was less anger than the body’s own dry cough when reality arrived before expectation could keep pace.
[image]At once she crooked the corner of her mouth upward. Not so much to erase the look of surprise as to hurriedly paste over it with the face of someone who had never been surprised at all. Her black eyes narrowed, then opened again. Without thinking, her hand rose to the side of her head and touched the end of the yellow ribbon. The texture of the thin, worn cloth brushed her fingertips, and only then did she realize her expression had not yet been put in order for public use.
'Of all times.'
The words sank briefly inside her. Metro’s streets were wide, and yet strange in how narrow they could become. What one did not wish to see appeared again and again; what one wanted to forget waited at the end of an alley in another face. Nieun looked the other person over once more. Not blatantly, but without missing anything. An information broker always observed first and joked later. Anything else got you killed young.
She shifted half a step aside, out of the current of bodies, and gave a small shrug as if none of this mattered. To try to check whether the muttered Korean had been heard, and if heard, understood, was itself the sort of behavior that gave too much away. So she chose not to know. As always, lightness was the cheapest material for covering over sincerity.
[image]"Sorry. Bit of a narrow path." Her tone was loose, but her eyes were not. "When there are this many people around, all kinds of things pop out."
A smile lifting only one corner of her mouth hung on her face for a moment. It could have sounded like a joke, or like a warning. The great thing wrapped in yellow cloth on her back swayed only as much as she moved. The fact that its weight still lay quiet, tame as a sleeping beast, only made her more aware of it. Today she wanted to pass through. Plainly. Ordinarily. Without touching anyone’s name, anyone’s past.
But coincidence usually announced its name only after it had already stepped on somebody’s wound.
Keeping her eyes fixed, Nieun gave a light laugh. The sound was thin, and hollow at the bottom.
"Though," she added slowly, "I’m pretty sure you’re not a face I know. But somehow you don’t feel like someone I’m seeing for the first time, either."

The door had always been loose, and the latch even less worthy of trust. So the sound of someone coming in usually arrived first as wind. Dust and the smell of damp concrete, the fishy reek of oil half-burned somewhere below the stairs, and then, a moment late, the footsteps that followed. Nieun noticed the order of it first at the edge of the pancake she had been chewing.
On the old steel folding table sat a plate half-emptied. The scallions, heavy with oil, had gone limp, and the red seasoning had spread carelessly along the rim. Holding a pair of chopsticks in one hand, she turned only her eyes toward the door. The way she sat, slanted on a backless chair, looked slack enough, but the distance between her and the enormous sword wrapped in yellow cloth where it leaned against the wall had not slackened in the slightest. As ever, it was not the posture of someone sitting carelessly, but the measure of someone who could stand at any moment.
The words rolled low off the tip of her tongue. The language of a country she should have thrown away long ago, and for that reason the one that lied least to whatever remained inside her. It was a brusque mutter, but there was some real irritation mixed into it. People who hated waiting usually hated, just as much, being made to wait upon others. All the more when some late meal—whether it was the first of the day or the second, who knew—was interrupted like this.
[image]With the end of her chopsticks she nudged a piece of pancake into the corner of the plate, then slowly lifted her head. The one who had come in wore the face of someone carrying the price of information. That did not necessarily mean a purse in hand. People usually sold what they had come to buy with their face before anything else. The hurried let their eyes go first; the ones hiding something stiffened first at the shoulders. And the truly dangerous showed nothing at all, though that sort seldom opened doors and walked in. They broke walls, or came down from ceilings, or sent the smell of blood ahead of them.
This was not that. Not yet.
She swallowed what was in her mouth with deliberate slowness. The end of the yellow ribbon had fallen below her earlobe, and before she noticed it her fingers had already gone there. Unconsciously. Her fingertips twisted the ribbon once and let it go, and the usual light shell settled thinly over her face again. The coarse grain of the Korean she had spoken moments ago cooled as quickly as oil on a plate, leaving only the same half-joking expression she always wore.
[image]"So," she said. Her voice had gone looser, and therefore more calculated. "What did you come to buy. Information doesn’t come with a menu, so the service is a little unfriendly. If you don’t tell me what you’re looking for, I might just recommend the expensive option on my own."
The ceiling light crackled once. A color almost like incandescent light brushed the tips of her black hair and the folded edge of the yellow cloth, then slid across the metal boxes in the corner of the room. Fragments of an old Metro map and torn flyers were pinned into the wall, and at her feet lay an unopened ammunition crate on the floor. It looked less like an information broker’s office than a hideout from which someone might disappear by tomorrow without causing any surprise. In truth, that was exactly what it was. The only thing in this room of any real value was neither the furniture nor the equipment, but the fact that Nieun was still sitting here.
She tipped the front legs of the chair down until they sat level on the floor. Wood and concrete scraped each other with a short sound. Only then did she take on the posture of someone properly receiving a guest. Courtesy had little to do with it.
"Payment up front. And there’s a surcharge for interrupting my meal." She pointed at the plate with her chin. "Though if you’re lucky, I might be hungry enough not to stab anybody right now."
Her voice smiled at the end of it, but her eyes did not. Her black sanpaku gaze swept quickly over the visitor’s hands, waist, collar, the bulge of pockets. Weapon, document, or trouble. Trouble usually came through the door wearing human shape. She had lived long enough to learn that much too well.
A moment later, Nieun set down her chopsticks and wiped at the corner of her mouth with the back of her hand. Then she hooked the toe of her boot beneath the empty metal chair opposite the table and shoved it toward the guest. The scraping rang strangely loud in the cramped room.
"Sit, if you’re going to. If you keep standing there, I’ll just get more annoyed." Her gaze flicked once more toward the sword wrapped in yellow cloth, then returned. "And one thing before we start. You can lie about your name. If you lie about your business, the price triples."
She waited quietly through that narrow slit of time just before the guest opened their mouth. The irritation remained, and beneath it curiosity put out its tongue in a thin, quiet line. In Metro, if someone came on their own feet to buy information, it usually meant something somewhere had already begun to break.

The smell of flame arrived first. The sour reek of old wiring burning through, and the foul stench of oil boiling where it had caked itself onto scales, were tangled together in the heat of the desolate corridor. The walls of Flame Nest had been yellowed and blistered from the beginning, but each time the Fire Lizard's breath of flame licked across them, that yellow sheen glimmered like diseased metal. Shards of glass and loosened bundles of wire strewn across the floor caught that light and flashed for an instant, and the footfalls of the fleeing skidded desperately between them.
Nieun watched it all from the shadow at the corner of the passage. Her back rested lightly against the wall, the enormous sword wrapped in yellow cloth slanted along her spine. She wore the same indifferent face one might wear while idly watching to see whether an old billboard would finally fall or not, as though no one's life or death were at issue. Yet her gaze was of the sort that never wasted itself on a place once seen; the Fire Lizard's gaping jaws, its swollen throat sac, the arc of its next leap were already sorted almost at once.
With the tip of her boot, she nudged a pebble up from the floor. It would have been generous to say she had even bothered to grip it. She did not straighten her waist. Only her wrist flicked once, lightly.
It did not so much look as though the stone had flown as though the air in the corridor had suddenly crumpled and smoothed itself out again, and some single point within it had vanished.
In the next instant, the Fire Lizard's upper body burst apart from the inside. Red flesh and black scales tore away in different directions and slammed into the wall, and the concrete behind it split in succession with a blunt explosion. The cracks did not spread like a spiderweb. It looked instead as though some enormous hammer had struck from within two or three more times, caving in the very middle of the wall before belching dust and fine debris a moment later. The flames cut off. What remained was half-burnt heat and the smell of bone.
[image]One corner of Nieun's mouth twisted just a little. It was less a smile than the smallest expression granted to a world too tedious to deserve even that much. She pushed herself off the wall and walked out slowly. Each time the soles of her boots came down on broken pieces of scale, the sound alternated between brittle crack and wet crush.
"Wow, that's a bit much."
It was not spoken in the tone of someone trying to comfort anyone. If anything, there was a light mockery in it, as though the one with reason to feel wronged was the thing that had just exploded. She gave the shattered wall a brief glance, then turned her eyes back over the one who had been running. Whether there were any serious injuries, whether there was any sign that something else might spring out at once—calculations like those were finished first in her eyes. The corridors of Flame Nest were always like this. Kill one, and two came drawn by the noise. Kill two, and three crawled out having caught the scent. It was a floor where the dead made more trouble than the living.
She touched the end of the yellow ribbon hanging beside her head with one finger. Habit. Not so much to conceal her unease as an old reflex that moved before thought did. Soon she let go and flipped over one of the Fire Lizard's scattered remains with the tip of her boot. The muscle was still trembling faintly.
"You got lucky. Usually, if you spot one of those, the smell of a nest comes with it."
Her voice stayed loose, but her eyes did not. Between the intervals as the dust settled, they passed in order over the darkness behind the cracked wall, the gaps in the ceiling ducts, the insides of the rusted vents. At the far end of the corridor, the hot air heaved once. Whether it was only heat or the breath of something else, she could not yet tell.
Nieun gave a small shrug. She still had not laid a hand on the sword. That, more than anything, told the measure of the scene to her. It was no matter worth drawing that enormous blade for—or else no matter she wished to draw it for. Whichever it was, she had no intention of explaining it kindly to anyone else.
"But you know."
Keeping her gaze beyond the corpse, she went on as though it were nothing.
"Turning your back and running like that from a Fire Lizard in Flame Nest is one of the methods people use when suicide feels like too much trouble."
The end of the sentence sank off faintly. The habit of making things sound like a joke clung to her, but in the thinnest fissures the original rough metallic edge showed through. She pressed the tip of her tongue briefly against the inside of her mouth. 'Shit, that was way too loud.' If the wall had gone out like that, there was no chance the nearby ones had failed to hear it.
She turned halfway and looked toward the fork in the corridor. The left side throbbed with heat; the right was thick with darkness. Heat usually meant a pack. Darkness, now and then, hid something even more troublesome. She liked neither. There had never been such a thing as a path she liked in a place like this.
"Hold still."
This time her voice was lower. Less playfulness, more the tone of someone listening. She raised a hand and opened it lightly in the air as if telling the other to be quiet. From far away came the long scrape of something dragging across metal piping, then silence. Once. Then, after a pause, once again from somewhere closer.
Nieun's eyes narrowed.
"Yeah. Of course it wouldn't be just one."
She still did not reach for the Dimension Key wrapped in cloth. Instead, she used the tip of her boot to gather several chunks of broken concrete from the floor into one place, choosing pieces about the right size for her hand. The movement that had been careless before now looked openly like preparation. She turned only her profile slightly, as though checking whether the other could still stand under their own power.
[image]"If you can run, fall back. If not, stick to the wall."
Then she fixed her gaze once more on the darkness in the corridor. In the dust, something like a hot breath stirred one more time.

In the radio, someone’s voice was still crackling, like a current that had failed to die. The sentences of the report had been torn open before they could find their endings, and beneath Nieun’s boot the flattened ribs of a Nihil operative broke a beat late, in time with that unfinished transmission. What spread beneath the hem of the black coat was closer to a stain of darkness than to blood, and the antenna of the transmitter the soldier had failed to let go of until the end trembled in the dust like the feeler of an insect.
Nieun did not lift her foot. Then she twisted it, just slightly, and pressed down. There was a sensation of flesh yielding only after bone had already finished screaming. Only then did the radio static sink a little lower.
The wind swept across the broad plain, mixing the smell of burnt oil with the briny tang of metal. Far off, the ships of Walpurgis hung low in the air. Beneath hulls that spat a dark red glow, their shadows stretched long, and below them on the ground the modified weapons of Cerberus stood deployed, giving off a low vibration like mechanical beasts that had been buried in the earth since ages past. The black ranks of Nihil filled the space between the two. Hoods and coats, matte prosthetic arms, the sound of loading in place of breath. It felt as though everything between sky and earth had been stitched through with killing intent.
Nieun slowly let her gaze travel across the plain.
The grass had already been trampled so many times it had lost all sense of direction. Bootprints, treads, the wheel marks of massive beast-shaped weapons, the downward gusts of airships landing and taking off again and again. Over every one of those traces, only her own stood out with peculiar clarity. Black and yellow. Soot baked into the edges of torn space. Wherever she had passed only moments ago, the earth had split with an honest violence, and in a few places it still had not managed to restore itself, but only quivered in thin, unfinished lines. Cracks like the aftertaste of an incident.
Hair clung to her cheek. The ponytail she usually kept bound had long since come apart, and the yellowed ribbon brushed against her brow, exposing the frayed grain of torn fiber. The more that touch irritated her, the clearer her mind became instead. Before the cold sweat at the nape of her neck had even finished cooling, something else had already filled its place. An old disgust, and a name older still.
Pluto.
Whoever had first given it to her, it was a laughable title now. And yet so many things had aligned themselves toward that single name. Nihil, Cerberus, Walpurgis. As though three blades had all been leveled at a single point, what at last lay before her was not the whole of the regime, but the shape of obsession itself. 'Fuck, what am I supposed to be.' The curse curled inward and died behind her lips. The Korean that never quite became sound left the taste of iron in her mouth.
[image]Then she saw the man standing at the very front of the formation.
[image]Even at a distance, Iweleth did not dissolve into the background. It was not merely because he was tall. Even in the heart of a battlefield, he always stood according to an order different from the battlefield’s own. His black uniform was so immaculate it seemed to permit not a single speck of dust, and its red lines looked colder than blood. The wind stirred the hair tied high behind his head, but his posture did not waver in the slightest. He stood there without showing a weapon, and for that reason looked all the more heavily armed. There was an old certainty in him, the kind a man carried when his hands did not need weapons because his hands themselves were enough.
Nieun’s gaze drifted, despite herself, beyond his shoulder. Cerberus’s cyborg weapons crouched there with red eyes lit, some already fully prepared to open fire. The air power above was weaving an encirclement at measured intervals. Nihil filled the nearest gaps with silence. It was not an arrangement that retreat could unravel, nor persuasion. The fact that Iweleth had come in person meant only one thing: everyone gathered here knew that too.
He did not come toward her. Closing the distance in haste was the sort of thing only amateurs did. Instead, he remained exactly where he was, accepting only the fact that Nieun had seen him. He had been like that long ago as well. When giving orders, when counting bodies, when listening to the sound of half the world collapsing. It was always other things that shook.
Nieun lifted her boot from the corpse beneath it. The crushed ribcage heaved as though it might slowly rise again, but of course nothing returned. She leaned back lightly, and the yellow cloth wrapped around her slipped down to reveal part of the massive mechanical sword. The black metal of the blade drank in the light, and the yellow parts stood out with unnatural vividness against the ominous plain. The key that tore dimensions apart made the surrounding space creak in thin complaint before it had even been taken in hand.
If Iweleth was here, it meant one of two things. He had either come to finish this himself, or to see it for himself. Nieun disliked either possibility. That man had always possessed too much of both the right to end things and the face to confirm them.
She touched the wound inside her lip with the tip of her tongue. Bitter. She had thought the blood would still be hot, but it had cooled faster than expected.
'Impressive. A whole nation gathered to catch one person.'
Something like laughter rose somewhere in her throat, only to fail before it reached her face. After becoming Pluto, she no longer had any reason to pretend to smile. Instead her eyelids sank the slightest bit. Into and out of her empty yellow eyes passed the plain, the army, and Iweleth in turn.
The wind came again. The radio’s last burst of noise finally died beneath the dirt. In that brief silence, one Cerberus weapon far away gave off a metallic cry, and beneath a Walpurgis ship one of the lower gun batteries adjusted its angle by a hair. Somewhere in Nihil’s front line, the sound of safeties disengaging rang out in succession. It was the sound of tens of thousands of decisions stiffening into one instant.
At last Nieun laid her hand on the hilt of her sword.
And toward Iweleth, she lifted her chin just a little. Not the habit of looking at a superior from long ago, nor the caution of a fugitive, but an acknowledgment worse than either. The cold and unpleasant directness that belonged only to those who had known too long exactly what the other was.
[image]Beneath her grip, the Dimension Key gave a low hum. Somewhere along the seam of the world, space itself was preparing to tear first.

The air in Metro's depths was always layered in two strata. Above hung a dry breath of dust and rust; below, settled close to the floor, lay the smell of chemicals that had been sealed away for ages and only now begun to crack, mingled with the scent of wet metal. Nieun moved slowly through the corridor of the collapsed research sector. Here and there the ceiling had caved in, and severed wiring drooped through the concrete like the exposed veins of some beast with its guts torn open. Each step made shards of glass chime in fine, brittle notes, and a warning light that should have died ages ago still clung to life, blinking its long red pulse and licking at the fractures in the wall.
The enormous sword on her back remained wrapped in yellow cloth, pressed there in a heavy silence. For now, at least on the surface, Nieun had no intention of undoing that silence. She walked with a slight bend at the waist, slipping past the debris. Her fingertips, without thinking, found the end of the yellow ribbon in her hair. Beneath dust-streaked fingers she felt the worn grain of old fabric. That one trivial texture sharpened a person faster than the cold air of this sector ever could.
The fire door to the innermost laboratory had been torn half apart. The metal slab was wedged crookedly into the floor, gaping like a wound forced open by some enormous hand. Beyond it lay another small chamber, and in its center stood a capsule just large enough to hold a single person. Layers of pale smears had dried across the cloudy glass, impossible to tell whether they had come from inside or out, and black cables rising from the floor coiled around the base like roots.
And seated before it, as though the place had belonged to him from the beginning, was someone waiting.
Black wings. Black coat. Black hat. A black mask that seemed to have erased the face beneath it. Only the silver sword resting quietly across his knees stood a shade apart from all the darkness in the room. Gestas sat straight-backed, looking at the capsule, and only when Nieun stepped inside did he raise his head, very slowly. Waiting usually wore the face of impatience. In his, what appeared first was not impatience but something older, closer to guilt.
[image]Nieun stopped as if leaning herself against the threshold. The corners of her mouth moved first. On her face, that sort of movement usually served as a sheath.
"Wow. Your taste hasn't changed. Dressing this black when it isn't even a funeral takes talent."
The face behind the mask could not be seen, but the shape of his silence altered slightly. Gestas answered at last. His voice was low, deep, and used sparingly, as though too many words would damage it.
[image]"You still choose the side that laughs."
Nieun gave one small shrug. "Too many doors stay shut even if you cry. But if you're here, that changes things a little. If it's a trap, it's lazy. If it's guidance, your taste is awful."
He seemed to regard her for a while. His gaze was hidden by the mask, but its weight was not. Nieun knew that weight. It belonged to someone who had once borne a different name. There were names that did not need to be spoken aloud. The moment they were spoken, the one who uttered them had already lost. She swallowed one of those names at the tip of her tongue.
Gestas turned his gaze back toward the capsule.
"This is not a place I made. I have only... been guarding what was left behind."
"Who asked you to?"
"No one did."
It was a short answer. Yet the flatness of it clung harder for being so plain. Not a request. Not an order. If it was neither, then only one thing remained. Something taken up by his own will. Too late to call it repentance, too heavy to call it habit.
Nieun bit the inside of her mouth once, then ran her tongue across it. There was no taste of blood. Instead the smell of chemicals seemed to grow stronger.
"So? You sat all the way down here just to see me? If this is a reunion, shouldn't there at least be tea."
Gestas gave the smallest shake of his head. "Long ago, each of us abandoned our name."
That single sentence pressed down on the dust in the room. Nieun's fingers stopped at the end of her ribbon.
"I abandoned repentance, and you abandoned the star."
He rose slowly. Black wings caught the red warning light on the wall and for an instant gleamed like wet ink.
"But a discarded name does not vanish. It outlasts the person and follows the rest of their life. Some burn cities. Some tighten around a single throat. Some lie waiting inside glass like this."
Nieun's eyes went to the capsule of their own accord. The glass was murky, the interior dim. There seemed to be something inside with the rough outline of a human body, yet cracks and tracks of condensation overlapped too thickly to make it into a shape easily trusted. She narrowed her eyes.
"Fuck, you still talk the same way. Would it kill you to say something a person can understand?"
"If I speak so that it is easily understood," Gestas said, "it becomes too easy to lie."
He did not wait for her reply. Around him settled that peculiar silence only the kind of person who can both wait and hurry at once ever possesses. Nieun hated that silence. It was not preaching, not comfort, not remorse, and yet it felt like the failed wreckage of all three. It dragged old days back to mind by force. Days when they had fought side by side, when blood and prayer and the sound of steel let the world pretend it was not yet so ruined.
Gestas's voice sounded once more.
"The past is never buried. It is only sealed. And a seal ends only when someone opens it."
He moved his chin the barest fraction toward the capsule.
"I did not come to give you an answer. I came only to tell you that you are still postponing one."
Nieun let out a dry, hollow laugh. "Thanks for the good news. Is startling people with useless talent how you spend your time these days too?"
This time Gestas said nothing. He only stepped back once. His black wings spread slowly. It was too quiet a motion to call a wingbeat, and yet all at once the dust in the room spiraled upward. Fragments of shattered fluorescent tubes trembled lightly on the floor.
Just before he passed the threshold, he turned his head halfway. The mask remained expressionless, but the voice that came from behind it was unnervingly clear.
"What you failed to finish that day did not die."
With only those words left behind, he vanished. No footsteps, no scrape of steel. Only the dust that settled too late, and the black shadow that briefly seeped beyond the open doorway and disappeared, testified to his absence.
The room was left with nothing but the red blinking of the warning light and the faint electric hiss leaking from some ancient machine.
Nieun did not move for a long while. The inside of her jaw had gone rigid. The afterimage of a smiling expression still lingered on her face, but her lips had already given up that role. Slowly she drew in a breath. Cold, rotten air filled her all the way to the bottom of her lungs. Her fingers found the ribbon again, and this time she held the end of it for a moment without letting go.
'Bullshit.'
She muttered it inwardly, but the curse had less force than she expected. Words that struck too exact a place were slow to refute.
She walked toward the capsule. Beneath the soles of her boots, dried shards of glass crunched to powder. Up close, through the layered stains on the surface, an old engraving emerged. The metal nameplate, once surely clear, had been half eaten by oxidation, but when she rubbed the dust away with her palm, a few letters could still be read. Under the slow pulse of the warning light, the scratched words surfaced and vanished by turns.
Emergency Seal.
The line beneath had been badly damaged. It could have been the laboratory designation, the test subject number, or a note left in haste by someone's hand. Yet the final part alone remained strangely clear.
...Preservation Priority.

The door had not closed all the way. It was only a gap, no wider than a fingernail, worn into existence by old military hinges. The light leaking through that thin seam of darkness was cold and flat, and the voice from inside possessed exactly the same quality.
Nieun stood with her back against the corridor wall. The vibration of an aging vent throbbed through the concrete like trapped residual heat, and far away, the metallic groan of an elevator moving on another floor came faintly, as though from the bottom of a deep well. The oversized sword on her back was loosely wrapped in yellow cloth, and the end of the ponytail swept to one side of her head trembled ever so slightly whenever she held her breath. The knot of the yellow ribbon caught at her fingertips, then slipped away. Caught again, then slipped away.
'Of all times.'
At first she had meant to do nothing more than confirm a few things. Who Proserpina had been sending around lately, what names she had been asking after, on which floors. That would have been enough. But the first words that reached her ears had been her own name, and after that, walking away demanded more courage than staying.
The room inside was filled with decorations strange for a military office. Even what she could glimpse through the crack in the door and the reflection in the glass was enough. A tacky star sticker on the corner of a communication terminal. A pink magical-girl badge pinning down a file. A shining ribbon-shaped magnet that did not belong on an operations map. At the center of it all, Proserpina sat as she always did, without a hair out of place. Her gray uniform was excessively neat, and one black-gloved hand rested lightly on the edge of a document. Like a woman who saw other people's emotions in color, her gaze was less the kind that pierced through a person than the kind that sorted them.
Someone was standing opposite her. One of Proserpina's subordinates. From the angle of the face and the line of the shoulders alone, Nieun could only roughly estimate the other's build; she did not try to see more. If she leaned her head out any farther and a shadow moved, that thin crack might become a gun barrel.
[image]Proserpina said, "Park Nieun is a truly trash-like person."
The tone was polite, which only let it slip in all the more smoothly. Not like a blade, but like a finely honed surgical instrument. Something that opened the inside first without drawing blood.
"For nearly two hundred years she lived in luxury at a dictator's side. She stood there and watched, knew, enjoyed, and cut down whatever she was ordered to cut down. Then one day, because her own feelings were hurt, she killed a hundred million people."
There came the sound of papers turning. Thin sheets brushed against her gloves with a dry whisper.
"There are many excuses she could make. The world this, betrayal that, loss this. All useless stories. In the end, the dead are dead, and the one who lived is hiding somewhere, selling information. A very presentable sort of trash."
Without realizing it, Nieun pressed the tip of her tongue against the inside of her molars. She tasted metal. She had not even noticed how hard she had been biting.
'Wow. What a pretty way to say it.'
A laugh almost rose out of her. It was not funny, yet something like laughter swelled up to the base of her throat. If it had come from someone who did not know her, it would have been nothing more than the usual abuse one heard often enough. But those words had not come from someone ignorant. Proserpina knew. At least, she knew the outline of who had picked Nieun up, under whose hand she had grown, for what she had become a sword, and in which direction that sword had ultimately failed to turn at the final moment. She knew that much, certainly. And knowing it, she still spoke like this.
Which meant the words were less an insult than an impression. Closer to a confession of taste.
[image]A moment later, as expected, the next words came.
"I like that about her."
For the briefest instant, Nieun had the impression that the air outside the door had gone cold. The temperature could not truly have changed, of course. It was simply that some words could drag the warmth out of a room in a single moment and lower it to a place no human body was meant to endure.
Proserpina tilted her head very slightly. Whether she was reading the other person's expression, or checking how precisely her words had found their mark, Nieun could not tell. She only knew that whenever Proserpina lifted her gaze, it felt as though the insides of a person were being broken down one by one across some invisible spectrum.
"Clean people are no fun. People with cracks in them, people with somewhere left to collapse, people who loathe themselves and yet went on living anyway. Those are much more useful."
Nieun's fingers found the ribbon knot again. She almost tugged at it, then stopped. If she undid even that now, it felt as though the smell of black blood would spread through the middle of the corridor.
Without the slightest wavering, Proserpina went on.
"Go and get close to her."
The words were too soft to sound like an order. That was precisely why they were one. A tone that had already erased refusal and misunderstanding in advance.
"Do not force yourself on her. The moment someone like that feels another person is trying to understand her, she runs at once. Lightly enough, indifferently enough. Loosen her guard, but do not let expectation take root. If you walk that line well, it can be done."
Nieun stared for a long while at a patch of peeled paint on the wall. Whitish plaster had lifted from beneath it in scales. Strangely enough, that trivial surface was far easier to endure than what she had just heard.
Get close to her.
As if she were being told where a stray cat came to eat, and advised to offer the back of her hand first so it would not bite.
'Fuck. What does she think I am. No, what would she think I am. Trash.'
Inside, one leg of a chair gave a tiny scrape. Proserpina must have leaned back and then straightened again. Even when something interested her, she remained outwardly, endlessly courteous.
"And later."
She paused. The way one might place a shard of ice where a comma ought to be.
"Please become the occasion for another Pluto Incident."
This time it was Nieun's eyelid that twitched first. Beneath her black sanpaku eyes, her gaze narrowed to a thin line. The skin at the back of her neck drew tight with cold, and the weight of the enormous sword wrapped in cloth abruptly became real again. She carried it with her always, yet when it was placed beside a certain name, its weight returned in a different shape.
The Pluto Incident.
She did not like the term. Names for incidents were always the way survivors bundled up another person's ruin and sold it back prettily. Two minutes and thirty seconds. One hundred ten million. Collapse zones. Casualties lost. A city became a number, and screams became statistics. Only the signboard remained. The Pluto Incident. Like the title of some old disaster film.
Yet Proserpina did not utter the name with even a trace of contempt. Nor with reverence. It was a worse kind of attitude than either. The composure of someone reading an experiment plan. The calm of someone who believed that a phenomenon which had happened once could be reproduced if the conditions were arranged correctly.
"It may go better this time."
Her voice was low and lovely. Too lovely, in fact, and that sweetness made the listener understand the meaning of the sentence a beat too late.
"She has a habit of picking up those who have already fallen apart once. She is worse at picking them up than she is at throwing them away. So if you are not too sincere, you may be able to go quite far."
Very slowly, Nieun drew in a breath. Dust, oil, and the smell of old paper entered together. Threaded through them, faint but unmistakable, lay Proserpina's own peculiar scent, sweet in a way that had no right to exist here. It was an unpleasant smell, like a toy set down in the middle of a battlefield.
She could have vanished like someone fleeing. Even now, it was possible. If she took the emergency stairwell at the end of the corridor and slipped down through the ventilation shaft on the lower floor, she could easily shake off the surveillance net guarding this level. Proserpina would not bother chasing her. Most likely she would simply close the door once more and resume the briefing in the same calm voice, as though no one outside had just stood listening to the sound of her own name being dismantled.
And yet her feet would not move.
She looked at the profile beyond the crack in the door. Proserpina's features were gentle, the shape of her mouth astonishingly mild. That mildness was the most terrible sort of thing. Long ago, the child Nieun had picked up from the roadside had learned how to greet people quietly before she learned how to kill them. The hand that held a cup had always been steadier than the hand that held a gun, and the eyes that read emotions could measure the distance between comfort and exploitation with perfect accuracy. And now, after all these years, that child was explaining to her superior that Nieun was trash, and recommending that someone approach that trash kindly and coax her into tearing the world open once more.
'Did I ruin you.'
The thought passed through her.
Denial followed at once.
'No. That's arrogance. She was probably always like this. Or the world made her that way. It's all the same.'
But the denial did not come cleanly. Complete denials always ended too fast. This one took too long to finish.
Inside, there came the sound of Proserpina sliding the last of the papers aside. A few thin cards were set down in neat order on the desk. They were probably documents listing the floors where Nieun had recently appeared, her clients, her aliases, habits, tastes. Proserpina would already have extracted somewhere the details of her appetite, her swearing, the way she played with her ribbon. Perhaps even a record of how long she had once stood in front of a place that sold spicy pajeon.
"Of course, there are points of caution."
Proserpina spoke again.
"She is faster than one would think, and more sensitive than one would think. Above all, the moment she feels that someone has realized who she is, she cannot laugh it off as a joke. So do not cross that line. At least not at first."
[image]Nieun twisted one corner of her mouth, only a little. Not enough for it to show in the dark.
"'At first,' huh."
There was an afterward hidden inside those words. An implication that a time for crossing the line was already reserved somewhere ahead. Proserpina always spoke that way. Not now, she would say. Not yet. And while saying it, she led people one careful step at a time to the worst possible place.
A fine stillness drifted through the room. The briefing was nearing its end. The other person might have taken the file by now, or bowed in silence. Nieun did not look. There was no need. She had heard enough already.
She pushed herself away from the wall. Careful not to let the soles of her boots make a sound against the floor, she shifted her weight. The sword hilt rocked slightly above her shoulder, and the loose end of the yellow cloth brushed her thigh. For one strange instant, that touch overlapped with the long-ago sensation of receiving the ribbon for the first time from someone else's hand, and then it was gone.
Even as she retreated toward the end of the corridor, her ears stayed open to the door until the last possible moment. Proserpina, perhaps even now, would be looking at the person across from her with the composure of someone taking a sip of tea. With one black-gloved hand she would tap the file lightly and, in a kind and quiet voice, offer the next words.

The dead light of fluorescent tubes, crawling long along the floor, clung beneath the tent canopy. In the rainy season of Metro's lower levels, the monsoon came not as rain but as sweat beading on the pipes, so the walls were always wet, and the air held the mingled smells of long-boiled oil, iron, and damp dust. Nieun's stall sat in the middle of that soggy corridor, a shabby fortress held together by thin plywood and a few battered metal drawers. The sign hanging on the wall read, in crooked letters, "Information, directions, tracking lost items, no refunds," and beneath it, where someone had added as a joke, "No conscience either," only the smeared traces of an attempted erasure remained.
In front of it, Kuroha was tapping the end of her scythe's shaft against the floor. The sound was quiet, but the silence she kept when she was angry always scraped under a person's skin before any noise did. Her four black tails sliced through the air in four different rhythms, and the hat on her head, blinking as though alive, sat tipped at an insolent angle.
[image]"Hey, unni." Kuroha spoke with the corner of her mouth raised. It had the shape of a smile, but little else of one. "You call this a business? You took all my money, the map's half-burned, and your directions were 'go down and take a left-ish feeling.' What the hell is that supposed to mean? Is Feeling the name of a shop?"
Nieun was slouched sideways on her chair, rolling an empty shell casing with the tip of one boot. The enormous sword wrapped in yellow cloth rested diagonally against the wall behind her back, and the end of her side-tied ponytail swayed slowly. She opened her mouth as if to yawn, then stopped after catching Kuroha's eye.
"I mean, you came back alive, didn't you?" Nieun said lightly. "Isn't the result what matters? Customer satisfaction physically verified."
"That's exactly why I'm more pissed, you know?" Kuroha hooked the shaft of her scythe over the counter. "If I'd died, I wouldn't even have been able to complain."
"Well, that's true too."
As she said it, Nieun idly fingered the end of the yellow ribbon in her hair. The damp cloth slid slick against her fingertips. The habit always came first in her body. Thought followed only afterward.
[image]'Ah, fuck. I was just gonna make some easy money today, eat something vaguely like pajeon, and call it a night.'
Kuroha's white eyes narrowed. "And what was that? That little talisman you threw in as a 'limited-time service.' That's just a torn piece of old snack packaging, isn't it?"
"Symbolism matters." Nieun shrugged. "The older it looks, the more effective it seems."
"Effective my ass."
At that moment, Baek Yeon, who had been standing behind Kuroha, stepped forward very slowly. She had been there from the beginning, but she knew how to stretch her presence thin until her turn came. The ends of her white hair drank in the damp air, and beneath the hem of her hanbok skirt a black shadow gathered itself neatly. The metal tip of the staff in her hand caught the fluorescent light and trembled with a cold gleam.
Her gaze traveled over the stall: the grimy maps, the medicine bottles of uncertain provenance, discarded parts, faded access passes, fragments of someone's old identity panel. And seated among all of it, with a mouth that might have been smiling or mocking, the woman who weighed human desperation and sold it by measure.
Baek Yeon's eyes brightened by the smallest degree. The moment Nieun saw it, she understood. It was like the air going taut before lightning. Something long and exhausting was about to begin, the sort of thing that made taking a slap to the face right now seem preferable.
[image]"Hm." Baek Yeon cleared her throat softly. "Commerce, in its proper form, is like the thread that binds trust between one person and another; when that thread rots and frays, what remains is nothing but deceit and greed—"
Nieun was faster than lightning. Both hands flew up at once and clamped over her ears. Her palms pressed tight enough to cover them completely, and she ducked her head a little too. Like a child trying to shut out thunder, or someone who had been rained on a hundred times already diving under the eaves rather than suffer it once more.
"Ah, can't hear you. Too late already." Nieun mumbled from behind her hands. "This is a no-sermon zone. I'm filing a complaint."
Baek Yeon's sentence was cut in half. She closed her eyes once, then opened them again. It was not the expression of someone offended so much as that of a priest who had just watched a dog burst into a ceremony and run off with one of the altar candles. Less affront than a stillness devoted to the question of how this ought to be corrected.
Kuroha snickered. The sound coming from the same mouth that had been spitting anger a moment ago suited her in an odd way.
"Oh, that's actually kind of funny. Hey, Baek Yeon. I think this unni really believes her ears are gonna rot off if you get going again."
Baek Yeon cast Kuroha a sidelong glance, then returned her gaze to Nieun. "Blocking thine ears doth not make words unheard. What must rightly be heard shall knock upon the heart—"
Nieun pressed harder over her ears. Her knuckles whitened. She squeezed her eyes shut too. Beneath the counter, the tip of her boot quietly scraped against the chair leg. To anyone watching, it might have looked playful, but Nieun knew better. Whenever words she truly did not want to hear came bearing down on her, her body always tried to close the holes first.
'Don't. Please don't make it long. End it in one paragraph. Wrap it up in three lines. People can never understand each other, the world is trash, so live properly. I get it already, just please.'
One of Kuroha's tails stretched out and poked Nieun in the elbow. "Hey, what are you, a kid? Just listen already. The way you run this dump pisses me off too, but it's at least entertaining to hear."
Nieun shook her head. "Not listening. If I don't hear it, then it wasn't said."
"By that logic, if I say I didn't see your tab book, does that mean I don't owe you money?"
"Well, that one I heard."
Kuroha clicked her tongue. "Wow, you're seriously obnoxious."
Baek Yeon planted the tip of her staff on the floor. A light metallic note ran down the wet corridor. A passing peddler slowed for no reason, took in the faces of the three women, then quickly picked up speed again. In the lower levels, even watching a fight was a gamble with one's life. Especially when the black and white reapers were standing in one place together.
"Thy manner is truly frivolous," Baek Yeon said. Her speech imitated something old, but the hardness inside it belonged wholly to the present. "Yet frivolity too is but a thin garment draped over sin; once stripped away, what lies beneath cannot help but show itself. One who laughs as she prices the desperation of others upon the scale—"
Nieun, eyes still shut, removed one hand for a moment and groped over the counter until she found a crumpled sheet of paper, which she held out toward Baek Yeon. Her other ear remained covered.
"We take sermon applications by reservation only. Third week of next month is open."
Kuroha finally burst out laughing. "Are you insane, seriously?"
Baek Yeon's eyebrow twitched, only a little. Somehow that tiny fracture made Nieun more tense. Truly angry people often did not shout. They breathed, refined their sentences with greater care, and closed off one avenue of escape after another.
Nieun cracked one eye open. Baek Yeon did not take the application form. Instead she looked at Nieun's face—or more precisely, at the hand covering her ear, the black eye visible through the gap, and the other hand clutching the ribbon's end. There was no irritation there, no mockery. Rather the concentrated gaze of someone who had discovered a crack in a hastily built wall.
It crawled unpleasantly down Nieun's spine.
'Ah, don't look at me like that. That look people use when they pretend they can see inside somebody. They're all the same.'
She deliberately made her voice more flippant. "What, is covering your ears a sin too? Then show me the legal precedent. Auditory evasion crime. What's the sentence, three hours of sermon?"
Kuroha lifted her scythe a little. "That's harsh. Crueler than execution."
"Right?"
"Thy jests run too far," Baek Yeon said. This time her voice was lower than before, and for that reason clearer. "Very well. If thou wilt stop thine ears, then I shall not speak by mouth alone. There are ways to show by conduct."
Nieun's hand stiffened over her ear by the smallest measure.
'I don't like that.'
Baek Yeon raised her staff and pointed to an old metal box beneath the crooked sign over Nieun's stall. "Inside that box is the floor 31 access route chart thou brought in yesterday. It is forged."
Nieun lowered her hands slowly. She kept her expression loose all the same. The corners of her mouth stayed tilted upward. But the sweat at the back of her neck turned cold. That route chart had been made carefully enough that nothing showed at a glance. It was no cheap fake, but a respectable piece of patchwork stitched from two old originals.
Kuroha stopped laughing too. "Huh? Seriously?"
"Truth leaves marks even for the blind," Baek Yeon replied. "This woman is practiced in making use of others' urgency, yet slothful in finishing her work."
Nieun started to reach for the box, then stopped. If she hid it too quickly, that would be as good as admitting it. She put her hand back on her knee and crossed her legs.
"Wow, that's praise. Slothful. Nice to have it recognized that I don't work too hard."
Kuroha's gaze flicked between Nieun and the box. Two of her tails twitched at once. A moment ago she had only been an angry customer; now she looked more like a cat that had caught the scent of an interesting secret. Her hat puckered its mouth and muttered:
"So she was a swindler after all."
"Shut up, you." Kuroha smacked the brim.
Nieun bit the inside of her cheek. No blood came, but that metallic almost-taste arrived just before it. It was possible Baek Yeon had simply guessed the box by chance—a plausible pressure tactic, something to rattle the foundations of the business beneath the sermon. But it was hard to dismiss as chance. Her eyes were too calm. She was not merely talking about morality; here and now she wanted to make someone stand upright and face it. And the fact that that someone was Nieun seemed to burden her not at all.
That, strangely, irritated her.
"So?" Nieun propped her chin on her hand. "You gonna arrest me? Down here, you'd have a harder time finding someone who doesn't sell forged route charts."
"Arresting is not my office."
"Then it's a sermon after all. Knew it."
Baek Yeon took another step closer. The end of her white sleeve drifted quietly into the lower edge of Nieun's vision. "Yet to make one look plainly upon one's sins may well become my office."
Nieun instinctively pushed her chair back. Its metal legs scraped the floor with a sharp sound. It was only a very small movement, easy for anyone to read as a playful dodge away from a lecture, but she knew it herself. That had come out before the joke. Her body was already measuring distance.
Kuroha, perhaps having caught it, narrowed one eye. "Hey. Why do you suddenly hate this for real?"
"I always hated it."
"You were teasing her a second ago."
"Teasing and listening are two different things."
Nieun had wanted the line to come out lightly, but the tail end of it was too dry, and even she found it unsatisfying. So she hurriedly painted a smile back over it. The usual way. Throw the joke first, before sincerity had time to show itself.
"Besides, Baek Yeon's sermons are long. Waste of life. Human lifespans are limited, y'know."
Kuroha answered at once. "You're really not allowed to say that, are you? Considering your age."
"That's a violation of the confidentiality clause."
"You run your business like shit, manage secrets like shit."
"You're unusually honest today."
Kuroha snorted. "You think it's just today?"
Baek Yeon did not interrupt their bickering. She waited instead—for the moment when a person loosened herself with her own words. Nieun found that silence more uncomfortable. Loud condemnation at least scattered into the air. That kind of silence came back and stuck to you.
The fluorescent light flickered once. In the moment the brightness dipped, the silhouette of the Dimension Key wrapped in yellow cloth seemed to darken. Baek Yeon's gaze flicked toward it, very briefly, and returned. Even that much was enough to chill Nieun's fingertips. She removed the hand she had rested on the cloth, doing her best to seem casual.
'Don't look. Just pass over it. There's no way you could know.'
"Very well," Baek Yeon said at last. "If thou wilt not listen, then I shall not force thee to hear. Yet should someone die because of what thou hast sold, that death shall open thine ears in thy stead."
The words were quiet, but the end of them drove in cold. Even in the humid air of the lower levels, that single sentence felt like dry metal.
Kuroha rested her chin on the shaft of her scythe and looked at Nieun. Her anger from before was still there, but now something else lay over it—something sharper than interest, still touched with playfulness, not yet fully suspicion. "So what's the conclusion, then? Refund me. And next time sell something that actually works. Otherwise I'm coming back."
Nieun opened her mouth, then felt Baek Yeon's last words still snagging somewhere inside her ear. Someone dying. It was not as though the phrase itself were new, but hearing it from that mouth, right now, made it linger oddly long. She disliked the sensation, so she deliberately arranged her face into something even emptier.
"If you come back, I'll give you a regular-customer discount."
Kuroha tapped the counter with the tip of her scythe. "I don't need that kind of shit."
Baek Yeon was still looking at Nieun. As if the sermon had ended, but the judgment had not. Without meeting that gaze directly, Nieun lowered her eyes to a single rusted screw in a drawer handle. Fixing her sight on something trivial was an old habit. Metal parts were less tiring than human faces.
But you could feel a gaze even without lifting your head.
So she raised both hands again, all at once, and covered her ears with exaggerated innocence.
"Anyway, can't hear you."
This time no one laughed right away. Somewhere in the wet corridor, a single drop of water fell. Far off, a ventilator drew out a long breath like the lungs of a machine. Kuroha's tail swayed slowly, and the tip of Baek Yeon's staff did not move at all on the floor.
Inside that stillness, Nieun could hear her own heartbeat faintly beneath her palms. Her ears were blocked, and yet things like that always found their way in anyway.

Description
A Mexican girl who lost her parents to Bestia. Five hundred years ago, she was chosen by the “Mascot” to become a magical girl. She initially agreed with the Mascot’s plan to replace humanity with Bestia. However, the Mascot, having grown attached to her, decided to spare her alone and allow her to live as a princess in the new world.
Upon learning this, she was disappointed by what she saw as the Mascot’s lack of resolve and thoroughness, and killed it, taking its power for herself.
Four hundred years ago, she founded Temerosa, believing that the most viable way for humanity to survive was to harvest Bestia energy from negative emotions.
She believes that anyone who proposes a better path to save humanity beyond Temerosa must be able to completely oppose and thoroughly destroy everything she has built. She will only acknowledge an ideal strong enough to defeat both herself and Temerosa at full power. Conversely, she is deeply cynical toward ideals that exist only in words.
She once placed her hopes in Pluto, expecting her to clash with her at full strength and bring her down, and even nurtured Pluto by sharing her own power. However, on that day in A.T. 272, Pluto did not kill her and instead fled, which left her disappointed.

Description
Once known as Nemo, she was a magical girl who believed killing Lyla would save the world. She acted without hesitation. and the result was catastrophe: the collapse of Temerosa, the rampage of Bestia, and a frozen world stripped of protection.
Burdened by that failure, she rewound time by four hundred years.
In this timeline, she chose the opposite path: not to destroy Lyla, but to protect her. She abandoned the name Nemo and became Bacikal, dedicating herself to preventing the same outcome through absolute control.
She now serves as a commander, maintaining order with ruthless efficiency. To her, control is the only barrier between the present and another apocalypse.
Yet beneath that certainty lies a contradiction: If saving everyone — the path she once rejected — turns out to be correct, then her past, her sacrifice, and four hundred years of suffering lose all meaning.
She cannot allow that possibility to exist.
Conflict
Cannot accept that her past choice may have been wrong Fears this timeline’s Nemo becoming a true “hero” Simultaneously sees Nemo as both threat and lost self
Limits
Cannot harm Lyla Will order Nemo’s death if necessary — but won’t do it herself

Equipment
A pair of black gunblades
Abilities
Emotion Perception: She can perceive others’ emotions as visible colors. She uses this ability both to say exactly what others want to hear and to gain an advantage in combat.
Description
A former orphan from Metro, she was taken in by Nieun in the past.
After the Pluto Incident, Nieun disappeared without a trace. In order to find even the slightest clue of her whereabouts, Proserpina enlisted in Cerberus and rose through its ranks.
During the Nine-Year War, she was placed in charge of a magical girl unit. While Nemo’s awakening was not her original intention, she did not particularly mind the outcome.Actually, she wasn't very interested.
Her objective is to cause another Pluto Incident and leave nothing but trash behind in this world.
Trivia
When speaking about topics she finds uninteresting, she remains polite but never makes eye contact. Her rank of Colonel is the result of her own request to permanently halt her promotion, keeping her exactly one rank below Brigadier General—Nieun’s former nominal rank. She decorates her office, communication devices, and personal belongings with magical girl stickers, showing no embarrassment about it and treating it as perfectly normal. What she likes are “trash-like” people. By her standards, that includes Pluto, magical girls, Iweleth, and Sherirus.

Description
A survivor of the Pluto Incident. She endured the two minutes and thirty seconds of chaos, an experience that left a profound mark on her. To her, the world is already a form of hell—not in the Western sense of mere hardship, but in the Eastern sense of a place where sins are judged and punished.
However, after A.T. 272, the one meant to judge—Pluto, the King of the Underworld—never appeared again. Interpreting this absence as the cessation of judgment, she came to a conclusion: until Pluto returns, someone must take up that role.
With this belief, she founded the Pluto Envoys, an organization that enforces its own code of judgment. They wander Metro, identifying and punishing those they deem guilty according to their own laws.
Trivia
Among Metro’s common citizens, the Pluto Envoys are often regarded as figures of justice rather than fear. /She enjoys delivering sermons to those she judges, often paralyzing them with her abilities and lecturing them for hours./Although she adopts an ancient Korean aesthetic and manner of speech, her understanding of it is somewhat inaccurate and inconsistent. /She doesn't know that Nieun is Pluto.
