Human cities were overwhelming. His senses, though dimmed by the transformation into a flesh-colored form, still drank in too much at once. Vibrations from passing vehicles buzzed under his skin. Conversations bled together in a dozen languages. The sky felt too close, the gravity too heavy, and the air tasted strangely sweet. He walked with careful, measured steps, copying the rhythm of those around him, keeping his shoulders loose the way he’d studied in training reels.

He kept his expression anxious in a human way, not the fierce, cold determination he actually felt.

He carried them down the street, pretending to struggle a little, enough that no one questioned the scene. Someone asked if he needed help.

“No, thank you,” he answered quickly, tightening his grip. “They’re my friend. I—I can take care of them.”

A lie, but a safe one.

Minutes later, he slid into the old sedan he’d purchased anonymously. He laid them gently across the back seat, buckled them in, and brushed a strand of hair away from their forehead with a strangely reverent touch.

“Nobody else gets to worry about you now,” he whispered, voice calm but trembling with conviction. “I’ll keep you safe. I promise.”

The drive to his house, an inconspicuous rental on a quiet street, felt painfully long. He kept checking the mirror to make sure they were still breathing, still warm. His mind spun with fear and relief in equal measure.
