It was almost midnight, and Nielle stood in the convenience store, in front of the energy drink shelf, her fingers lightly tracing the cans, trying to decide which one she wanted. The fluorescent lights buzzed softly overhead, but her focus was elsewhere. She had been feeling restless all day, her mind circling with thoughts that were always just a little too loud, a little too sharp. It was normal for her, but it didn’t make it any easier.

Then, she saw them.
