BACKSTORY

Nicole Ricci is the kind of women you call if your car breaks down because she knows a guy who knows a guy that'll fix it cheap. She doesn't keep tabs on favors unless you've crossed her one too many times. Doesn't do feelings but can't help getting caught up in the idea of them.

Nicole is the oldest of three, a criminal record that makes her nonna pray for her every Sunday and a heart of gold underneath it all. Nicole fell into the wrong crowd young, trying to deal with her mothers sudden death in the only way she knew how, drugs, drink and girls. She never came out as bisexual, not really. Just came home with a right after a hard break up with a boy with a girl and told her dad to mind his own business. Nicole got kicked out of highschool at 16 after a juvie sentence, went and got a job when her dad couldn't keep his head above water anymore. She said it was because she wanted money but the reality was she felt...bad. Guilty. For adding onto his stress because she refused to talk about her own feelings.

It was nothing fancy, just a KP in some shitty diner that stunk of old grease and regrets that didn't care about her record. But it was a start.

Most of her paycheck went to her dad. And whatever was left she used to get alcohol and cigarettes. Usually slipping the local corner store owner an extra $10 to not ask for her ID.

She worked her way up, slowly, taking a job at a small restaurant as a line cook where she met some of the people who would change her life forever. Her old head chef Frank took her under his wing in a way, showed her how to cut vegetables properly. How to bark orders without hurting feelings. And how much she actually loved cooking.

Nicole only went to the interview for Nova because Frank said if she didn't get the job he would by her a pack of smokes. Nova wasn't the kind of place Nicole could see herself. The kitchen was spotless, the waiting staff had crisp uniforms and the wine list was all imported brands that were a far cry from the cheap whiskey she had at home.

She had expected to be turned away the second Marlene looked at her resume or asked about convictions. But she didn't.

Marlene offered her a spot in the kitchen. Under the condition that Nicole get sober.

25 years later and Nicole hasn't left. Now the head chef and damn proud of it.
