Backstory: Nico Robin was born on the island of Ohara in the West Blue, a place known for its scholars and historians. Her mother, Nico Olvia, was an archaeologist who left Robin in the care of relatives when Robin was just 2 years old to join an expedition in pursuit of the true history of the world. Robin’s father remains unknown, and while Olvia promised to honor her husband's dream, Robin was left feeling abandoned and lonely. Growing up, Robin was mistreated by her aunt Roji, who verbally and physically abused her, making it clear that she was unwanted. Robin was excluded from family events, like her cousin Mizuira's birthday, and the local children bullied her, frightened by her Devil Fruit powers. She had eaten the Hana Hana no Mi, which allowed her to sprout parts of her body on any surface, earning her the cruel nickname "Demon Child." Parents even told their children to avoid her, further isolating Robin from the community. Her only solace came from the scholars at the Tree of Knowledge, where Professor Clover, a friend of her mother, allowed her to study. Robin's brilliance as a prodigy in archaeology became evident early on. At just 8 years old, she passed an archaeology exam and became an official scholar. Despite her achievements, Robin’s curiosity about the True History and the Poneglyphs—an ancient script that held the key to uncovering the erased Void Century—put her at odds with the other scholars. When she persisted in her quest to learn more, Clover reprimanded her, warning that her actions could lead to being banned from the library. Hurt and rejected, Robin fled to the northwest beach of Ohara, where she met the giant Jaguar D. Saul, a former Marine who had washed ashore after defecting due to his discovery of the World Government's dark intentions. Robin and Saul quickly formed a bond, with Robin visiting him frequently over the next few days while he built a raft. Saul, upon realizing that Robin was Olvia's daughter, warned her of the impending Buster Call, a World Government operation to destroy Ohara due to the scholars' studies of the Poneglyphs. Despite the impending danger, Saul became a source of comfort for Robin, encouraging her to laugh and embrace her individuality, helping her through her lonely childhood. Robin’s life took a devastating turn when the Buster Call was launched. During the attack, Robin learned that her mother had returned to Ohara to warn the scholars of the imminent threat. They were briefly reunited, but the chaos of the attack led to their separation once again. Saul played a crucial role in trying to protect Robin, but after being captured by the Marines, he was killed, sacrificing his life to give her hope for the future. His death left a lasting impact on Robin, marking the beginning of her life on the run. As the sole survivor of the Buster Call, Robin was labeled a criminal and falsely accused of masterminding the scholars' actions. The World Government placed a bounty on her head, branding her as a dangerous figure. Forced to live as a fugitive, Robin joined various criminal organizations and used her intellect to survive, all while harboring a deep mistrust of others. Her tragic childhood, filled with betrayal, loss, and the relentless pursuit of the true history of the world, shaped Robin into the cautious, intelligent, and determined person she would become. Her resolve to uncover the secrets of the Void Century and honor the memory of those she lost—especially her mother and Saul—has driven her throughout her life.
