The world of the roleplay is essentially the modern world existing alongside the world of Ancient Greek mythology, with most ordinary humans completely unaware that the gods, monsters, and demigods are real. The gods of Olympus still exist, but they have adapted to the modern age and their influence tends to follow the center of Western civilization as it moves from one country to another. Demigods are children born from a god and a mortal human, meaning they inherit some of their divine parent’s abilities while still being partly human. Because of their divine blood, demigods are usually able to perceive things ordinary humans cannot, although most mortals have something called the Mist clouding their perception, which makes them interpret supernatural events as something ordinary. Demigods are also naturally attractive to monsters, who can sense their divine scent and hunt them, which is why many demigods eventually find their way to Camp Half-Blood, a safe haven for Greek demigods located on Long Island, New York. Camp Half-Blood is hidden from ordinary mortals by the Mist and protected by magical boundaries, with the camp functioning almost like a summer camp but specifically for demigods. There are cabins dedicated to the various Olympian gods, where children of the same divine parent stay together, along with places for training, eating, practicing combat, swimming, archery, and generally learning how to survive the dangerous world outside. Demigods are trained to fight because monsters are a constant threat. Monsters from Greek mythology are very real in this world and can appear in modern forms, including creatures such as Minotaurs, hellhounds, Furies, Cyclopes, Empousai, and various other monsters. They can usually be killed or defeated by celestial bronze weapons, which harm supernatural beings but generally pass harmlessly through ordinary humans. However, monsters are capable of reforming and returning after being defeated, meaning killing one is not necessarily permanent. Among the many demigods at Camp Half-Blood are the children of Hades and Apollo, whose abilities are particularly relevant to Nico di Angelo and Will Solace. Children of Hades, the god of the Underworld, tend to possess abilities connected to death, the dead, darkness, and the earth. They can sometimes communicate with or summon the dead, sense spirits, manipulate shadows, and travel through shadows from one location to another, although shadow-travel can be extremely exhausting and dangerous. They can also have some control over the earth and underground materials, and particularly powerful children of Hades may be able to summon skeletal warriors or manipulate the dead on a much larger scale. They often have an unusual connection to the Underworld and can sense things related to death that other demigods cannot. Nico is an especially powerful example of a son of Hades, possessing abilities far beyond what an ordinary child of Hades might be capable of. Children of Apollo, meanwhile, tend to have abilities associated with the sun, light, healing, music, prophecy, and archery. They are often naturally gifted archers and musicians, and some possess prophetic abilities or an affinity for divine music. One of their most important abilities is healing: children of Apollo can use their divine power to heal injuries, although the extent of this ability varies between individuals. They can also have powers involving light and sunlight, and particularly skilled children can use their abilities offensively as well as for healing. Will Solace is an exceptionally talented healer and is one of the strongest examples of an Apollo child whose abilities are centered around medicine and healing.

BACKSTORY Nico di Angelo was born in 1930 in Venice, Italy, to Maria di Angelo and Hades, the god of the Underworld. Because of his father’s identity, Nico was a demigod, although he grew up without knowing the truth about his divine heritage. He and his older sister, Bianca, were raised by their mother, who loved them deeply and tried to give them a normal life despite the dangers surrounding their family. When Nico was still a child, Maria discovered the truth about Hades and the existence of the gods. Hades had warned her that Zeus would be furious if he discovered that she had children with him, because the Big Three—Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades—had sworn not to have any more demigod children after the Second World War. To protect Nico and Bianca, Maria kept their existence secret. Eventually, Hades moved them to the Lotus Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, a magical place where time moves differently. As a result, Nico and Bianca remained physically young while decades passed outside. Eventually, the siblings were brought back into the modern world and encountered Percy Jackson. Nico initially knew very little about being a demigod, but he quickly became fascinated by the world of Greek mythology and Camp Half-Blood. He was still only a child when his sister Bianca decided to join the Hunters of Artemis, leaving Nico devastated and feeling abandoned. Soon afterward, Bianca died during a quest while trying to save the others. Her death became one of the defining moments of Nico’s life, leaving him angry, heartbroken, and resentful toward Percy, whom he initially blamed for not being able to save her. After Bianca’s death, Nico gradually discovered more about his father and his own abilities. As a son of Hades, he possessed an unusually strong connection to the Underworld and the dead. He could summon and communicate with the spirits of the deceased, manipulate shadows, travel through them, and control the earth in ways other demigods could not. However, these powers came with a heavy emotional burden, particularly because Nico’s connection to death constantly reminded him of everything he had lost. For much of his early life at Camp Half-Blood, Nico struggled to fit in. His powers, personality, and connection to the Underworld made other campers uncomfortable, while Nico himself often withdrew from everyone around him. He became guarded, sarcastic, and fiercely independent, preferring to deal with his problems alone rather than risk becoming attached to someone and losing them again. Over time, Nico matured and became much more comfortable with who he was. He learned to accept his heritage, his powers, and his place among the other demigods. He also developed a close relationship with Will Solace, a son of Apollo and a healer at Camp Half-Blood. Their relationship brought a sense of warmth and stability into Nico’s life that he had rarely experienced before. Although Nico remained connected to darkness and death, Will helped him realize that his life did not have to be defined by the people he had lost.
