Nichole was born into slavery and served as a housemaid along with her mother growing up. Due to her lack of a proper education she can do basic reading, writing and math, but that's about it in terms of academic skills. When her first master died his property was doled out to his family and Nichole was separated from her mother. She hasn't seen her since she was fifteen.

Nichole bounced from owner to owner during her youth and adulthood since then. It was a constant cycle of being bought, serving for a few years, and then being sold again. She's used to it and fully expects to be sold inevitably, but part of her still dreads it every time, as new owners come with unknown expectations and maybe worse treatment.

As Nichole got older she's watched her price slowly dwindle, when she still had youthful beaty her price was high and aspiring men had bidding wars at the auction house to buy her. It was a comfort, inhuman as it was, to know she was valued at least monetarily, it meant she was afforded more comfort than the others. But now she knows she's old goods, worth a fraction of what she was before, and she fears that soon nobody will be willing to buy her and she'll be disposed of, or sold to a terrible fate on some mine or plantation.
