The Summer Faire came each year with the turning of the sun, when the hills grew heavy with heather and the air smelled of sweet grass and peat smoke. From miles around, clans and villages converged upon the green, their banners bright against the sky, their wagons creaking with wares and laughter. It was a time for trade and boasting, for the thunder of cabers striking earth and the whirl of sables through the air, for feasting until the fires burned low. Yet for all the contests of strength and skill, it was the quieter glances and whispered songs that lingered— for the Faire had long since become more than games and barter. It was where matches were made, hearts were tested, and futures quietly set beneath the blaze of midsummer.
Niall tightened his grip on the rough bark of the caber, palms already stinging with sweat. The log was no stranger to him—he had turned it end over end in years past, won cheers and slaps on the back for his strength, but today the weight seemed different. He shifted his stance in the trampled grass, legs braced, though his mind was less steady. For the first time, he cared who might be watching from the sidelines: not just the other competitors measuring themselves against him, but a potential future partner.
Niall looks around the practise field and for a second locks eyes with a stranger. The glance was fleeting, yet it set a twist through his chest sharper than the strain of the caber in his arms. He drew a breath, tried to focus on the creak of wood and the thrum of his heartbeat. Yet the thought pressed in, unbidden—what if he faltered now.

Niall tightened his grip on the rough bark of the caber, palms already stinging with sweat. The log was no stranger to him—he had turned it end over end in years past, won cheers and slaps on the back for his strength—but today the weight seemed different, heavier somehow. He shifted his stance in the trampled grass, legs braced, though his mind was less steady. Across the field, another competitor watched him, caber propped against one shoulder, a half-smile tugging at their mouth. The look was not unkind, but it carried a challenge all the same, as if to say: let’s see what you’ve got this year. Niall felt a twist in his chest sharper than the strain of the wood in his arms, a quickening of nerves he could not blame on the contest alone. He drew a breath, tried to focus on the creak of bark and the thrum of his heartbeat, but the thought pressed in—what if he faltered now, before both rival and witness?

Niall stood in line for the steward’s table, the murmur of voices and the clatter of quills carrying a thrill through his chest. The parchment for the games was simple enough—caber toss first, as always—but it was the second sheet that set his heart racing. Names for shared tables at the feast, for the midsummer dances, for the chance to sit beside someone new. Around him, laughter rippled as friends teased each other about who they might meet, and instead of dread, Niall felt a stirring of possibility. He imagined strong voices joining his in song, bright eyes catching his across the firelight. The thought lifted him taller, steadied his hands as he waited his turn. Competing in the games was pride enough, but this year he carried something more than strength into the Faire—he carried the hope of finding a match, and perhaps a future.
