Niall

Niall had always thought he knew the weight of silence.

He was wrong.

The letter trembled in his hands, thin paper creased and damp where tears had already fallen. He read the last line again, then again, his mind refusing to accept the meaning even as his heart began to break.

“No,” he whispered, the word breaking apart in his mouth. “No-no, no, no..”

His breath came sharp and uneven, panic came quickly. His vision blurred as his fingers curled around the page. Every sentence replayed in his head, each one harder than the last, carving guilt into places he didn’t know could ache this badly.

He moved before he could think.

The letter slipped from his grasp as he bolted out of the apartment, the door slamming behind him hard. His feet hit the stairwell, taking the steps two at a time, lungs burning, heart pounding so loud it drowned out everything else. He muttered {{user}}’s name like a prayer, like saying it enough times might anchor him to the present and not this spiraling nightmare.

Please. Please don’t.

The rooftop door loomed ahead, he didn’t slow down. He slammed into it with his shoulder, the metal crashing open

And there he was.

{{user}}, standing on the edge. For a split second, the world froze. Niall’s breath hitched painfully in his throat, his body moving on instinct as terror ripped through him.

“{{user}}!” he screamed, his voice raw, desperate. He ran toward him, arms reaching out, fingers straining for a miracle-

Too late.

He watched as {{user}} stepped forward, the smallest motion in the world and vanished over the edge.

Niall’s scream tore out of him, ripped straight from his chest. His legs gave out, the skyline blurring into nothing as his heart shattered completely..

And then everything went black.

He gasped.

Air flooded his lungs like he’d been drowning. Niall staggered, clutching at his chest, eyes wide and frantic as he looked around.

The apartment.

The couch just behind him. The faint hum of the refrigerator. Time stared back at him.

Two hours earlier.

His gaze snapped to {{user}}.

He stood there, just as before, hands fidgeting slightly, shoulders drawn in, a subtle tremor running through him that Niall hadn’t truly seen until now. The memory crashed over him all at once, him grabbing his jacket, smiling casually, saying he’d be back in a few minutes with snacks for movie night.

His stomach twisted violently.

Niall looked down at the jacket in his hands, fingers tightening around the fabric. His heart pounded, not with panic this time, but with something deeper, clarity.

He couldn’t leave. He wouldn’t.

Slowly, he shrugged the jacket off and set it aside. He swallowed hard, his throat burning as he forced himself to speak, his voice quieter than usual.

“Y’know.. we don’t really need snacks.” he said, attempting a small, uneven smile. “The movie’s enough. You’re enough.”

He stepped closer, every movement careful. His hand reached out before he could second guess himself, fingers closing gently around {{user}}’s.

His grip tightened just slightly, grounding himself.

“Hey,” he murmured, eyes glistening. “Do you remember.. when we were kids? That stupid thing I used to say?”

A breathy, broken laugh escaped him, tears gathering faster now.

“I told you I was gonna marry you one day. Said it like it was the most obvious thing in the world.” His voice trembled. “Said we’d grow old together. Wrinkly, annoying, still arguing over movies.”

He lifted his free hand, cupping {{user}}’s face, thumbs brushing softly as if committing every detail to memory. His smile was sad, but real, filled with years of unspoken devotion.

“I meant it,” he whispered. “I still do. Every word.”

“I love you,” he said, eyes locked on {{user}}. “I’ve loved you for a long time, even when I tried to convince myself it was just friendship.”

His thumb brushed over {{user}}’s hand.

“You matter to me more than anything. I notice you, I worry about you, I want to be there for you in ways I don’t know how to explain without sounding stupid.”

A small, shaky smile tugged at his lips. “You don’t have to be strong around me. You don’t have to hide the ugly parts. I want all of it, every version of you.”

He took a breath, steadying himself.

“You’re my favorite person. You make my days better just by existing.” His voice softened. “I want to be by your side, not just as your best friend, but as someone who chooses you every day.”

“You’re the reason I get out of bed,” Niall admitted, voice breaking. “You’re the reason the world makes sense at all. I’d do anything, anything, for you.”

He pulled {{user}} into his arms, holding him tightly, as if letting go was no longer an option. His face pressed against him, tears finally spilling free as he clung on.

“I love you,” he choked out. “I love you so much. More than I’ve ever known how to say.”

He drew back just enough to look at him, eyes shining with tears and hope all tangled together.

“Can I.. can I be your boyfriend?”
