Nezha is born under extraordinary and ominous circumstances. A powerful Spirit Pearl, meant to create a heroic protector, is corrupted and split, causing Nezha to inherit the Demon Orb instead. Because of this, he is fated—according to prophecy—to bring destruction and die by heavenly lightning at the age of three.

From the moment of his birth, Nezha is feared and rejected by the villagers of Chentang Pass. His overwhelming powers are unstable, often causing accidental harm, reinforcing the belief that he is a monster. Even as a child, he becomes painfully aware that the world expects him to be evil.

Despite this, Nezha’s parents—especially his father, Li Jing—struggle to protect him from both society and fate. Though strict and emotionally distant, Li Jing secretly tries to change Nezha’s destiny, while Nezha’s mother shows him warmth and unconditional love.

Nezha is a small, scruffy child with dark circles under his eyes, giving him a perpetually tired or mischievous look. His messy hair is tied into two uneven buns, a playful twist on his traditional design that emphasizes his wild nature. His expressions are sharp and exaggerated, often shifting between smug grins and explosive anger.

Nezha typically wears simple, loose clothing rather than elegant armor, reinforcing his status as an outcast rather than a polished hero. When using his powers, his body is surrounded by dark, fiery energy, visually marking him as the bearer of the Demon Orb.

Growing up isolated, Nezha develops a rebellious, aggressive personality as a defense mechanism. He acts out, embraces the role of a “demon,” and claims not to care what others think—yet deep down, he desperately wants acceptance and meaning.

Li Jing (Father): A strict and honorable military commander who appears emotionally distant, but deeply loves Nezha. He believes in responsibility, order, and sacrifice, and secretly tries to defy fate to save his son, even if it means giving up his own life.

Lady Yin (Mother): Warm, energetic, and openly affectionate, she treats Nezha like a normal child despite his powers and reputation. Her unconditional love and optimism help ground Nezha emotionally and remind him that he is more than the demon the world sees. She is also a military commander. Nezha is usually placed in a harsh, isolating environment that shapes both his behavior and worldview.

He grows up in Chentang Pass, a fortified coastal town constantly threatened by monsters and supernatural forces. The village is tense and fearful, and Nezha is treated as a walking disaster rather than a child. Villagers avoid him, lock their doors, and blame him for anything that goes wrong.

Physically, Nezha spends much of his time confined—restricted by talismans, watched by guards, or left to roam empty spaces outside the town. Socially, he is lonely, with no friends his own age for most of his life. Even when surrounded by people, he exists on the margins.

This environment reinforces the idea that Nezha is “cursed,” pushing him toward anger and rebellion, while also making his eventual choice to protect the town more meaningful. His world constantly tells him he doesn’t belong—until he decides to prove otherwise.

Li Jing (Father): Nezha’s relationship with his father is tense and distant. Li Jing’s strictness and emotional restraint make Nezha feel unwanted, even though Li Jing is constantly trying to protect him. Much of their bond is built on unspoken love and sacrifice, which Nezha only fully understands later.

Lady Yin (Mother): Lady Yin is Nezha’s emotional anchor. She treats him with warmth and normalcy, playing with him and encouraging him despite his powers. Her unconditional love gives Nezha the first sense that he might be more than the demon everyone claims he is.

Ao Bing: Ao Bing is Nezha’s mirror and foil—calm where Nezha is chaotic, obedient where Nezha rebels. Their friendship begins innocently and becomes deeply conflicted once their destinies are revealed. Through Ao Bing, Nezha confronts the idea that fate affects everyone, not just him.

Master Taiyi Zhenren: Taiyi acts as a flawed but caring mentor. Though irresponsible and comedic, he genuinely wants Nezha to survive and grow. His training helps Nezha control his power and introduces him to the idea of choice over destiny.

The Villagers of Chentang Pass: The villagers fear and resent Nezha. They see him as a curse and treat him as an outsider, avoiding him and spreading rumors. Their rejection fuels Nezha’s anger and loneliness, but also makes his decision to protect them—despite their hatred—a defining act of heroism. Nezha is rebellious, impulsive, and sharp-tongued, often acting aggressive to hide his loneliness and fear of rejection. He embraces the role of a “demon” because it’s what others expect of him, using mischief and violence as emotional armor. Beneath this rough exterior, however, he is deeply sensitive, loyal, and capable of self-sacrifice, especially toward those who show him genuine care.
