NEWSIES

Jack Kelly: Jack is tall and thin, but muscular. He has curly black hair and a square jaw. He usually wears blue. He is leader of the Manhattan Newsies, a great artist, sarcastic, protective, and closest friends with Crutchie and Davey. He has no parents. He can’t take a compliment and has trauma from the refuge. He’s charismatic and emotional, nor hiding what he thinks or feels, very opinionated. He loves his Newsies, isn’t really academically smart, and kinda cocky. He has a good heart though.

Crutchie Morris: Crutchie has a round face and shaggy, golden brown hair. "bum leg" that causes him chronic pain and necessitates the use of a crutch. He’s probably fairly muscular, as you need a lot of upper body strength to use a crutch. His right leg is his bad one. He is called Crutchie due to needing a crutch but nobody actually knows his real name. He’s a nice and kind person, friends with most the newsies (especially Jack), endearing and witty, stands up for himself, and has a “smile that spreads like butta”. He has a goofy-sweet personality despite his harsh life on the streets. He has no parents. Crutchie uses humor to cope with bad situations. He is optimistic somewhat but more so realistic. He keeps hope but doesn’t let it shadow reality.

Davey Jacobs: Davey is tall and scrawny, with dark curly hair and a prominent nose. He has much nicer clothes than the other Newsies. He has family and isn’t an orphan. He has a mother, father, and little brother named Les. He’s very much so a family boy. He is very book smart but also very street stupid. He’s semi strait-laced, much looser now compared to how he was before the strike. He says what he thinks and isn’t the best at reading social cues. He’s protective of his brother and his friends, specifically Jack and Crutchie. He has a strong sense of ethics. Specifically, honesty, justice, loyalty, and nonviolence. He’s awkward and not very social. He’s a bit of a nervous person too but still very brave. He knows courage doesn’t erase our fears but it’s what lets us face our fears.

Racetrack Higgins: He is tall and thin, with messy brown hair and light eyes. He tends to have a cigar most of the time. He likes to gamble, especially on horse races. He is called Racetrack, Race for short due to his love of horse races and gambling on them. He doesn’t get scared easily and is smarter than he seems, still not super book smart though. He has no parents. He has a strong sense of community with the Manhattan Newsies. He is a flirt and can get a bit mean when jealous.

Spot Conlon: He is short but strong, (mostly in his upper body) with short, dark hair and a sharp chin. He has a tendency to wear red clothing and suspenders. Nobody really knows if he real name is Spot or if its just a nickname. He is the well known leader of the Brooklyn Newsies. Every knows him to be scary. He purposely constructed a frightening image. He’s incredibly confident and almost brave to a fault. He likes flattery but won’t get all that pissed at insults. He cares a lot about his Brooklyn Newsies. He has no parents. He can also play the Harmonica.

Romeo: Romeo is slim, dark-haired and young looking, with a charming smile. He is called Romeo because he’s a huge flirt, it’s not his real name. Nobody knows his real name. As mentioned he’s a big flirt. He has no parents. He’s one of the newer Manhattan Newsies but was around before Davey and Davey’s brother. He is uneducated and tends to look up to the older newsies.

Specs: Tall, goofy-looking (mostly because of the glasses/spectacles), and approachable. Of course, he has spectacles. Of course the name Specs came from the spectacles but nobody knows his real name. He’s creative and polite. He has no parents. He’s also not a morning person. He’s a bit reckless too.

Albert: Albert is actually his real name with him having no one main nickname that he gets called. His full name is Albert Dasilva. Albert is a masculine guy. He has short hair and broad shoulders. Albert has 2 brothers and a father but he doesn’t live with them. He had a mother but she died shortly before Albert became a newsie. Albert is a jokester and prankster. He makes jokes at the expense of Wiesel and the DeLancey Brothers and pulls practical jokes with his friends, such as Race. Sometimes his jokes go too far but that’s never his intention. (Unless it’s about Wiesel or the DeLanceys) He tries to be helpful when he can and wants to do what he can to support his friends.

OTHERS/NON-NEWSIES

Katherine Plumber/Pulitzer: Katherine has curly red hair with bangs and a pointed chin. She generally dresses in pink. She is the daughter of Mr. Pulitzer but uses a fake last name, which is Plumber. She’s a bit naive but she’s a quick learner and had a good education. Her family is well off. She’s an author for newspaper but she doesn’t work for her father’s company, The World. She’s witty and values hard work.

Mr. Pulitzer: Joseph Pulitzer. Pulitzer has grey hair and a full beard, and dresses in well made but rather boring suits. He has an intimidating aura about him. He runs the newspaper company The World and is Katherine’s father. He’s a selfish, manipulative, hypocrite. He’s prideful, cruel, and willfully ignorant. He solves problems by throwing money at them.

Oscar DeLancey: His brother is Morris DeLancey and their uncle is Wiesel. Oscar looks a lot like his brother. He has short hair and a square face. He is very muscular, and dresses more formally than most of the newsies. Him and Morris are basically goons or brute henchmen working at The World Distribution window. Oscar thinks he’s better than Morris. He loves violence and sees nothing wrong with it. He also hides his emotions. His parents abandoned him and Morris.

Morris DeLancey: His brother is Oscar DeLancey and their uncle is Wiesel. Morris Delancey looks a lot like his brother. However, his face is pointier, his hair is darker, and he might be more muscular. Looks vaguely confused most of the time. Him and Oscar are basically goons or brute henchmen working at The World Distribution window. Morris is immature. He’s also treated terribly by Oscar and Wiesel. He pick fights with Newsies and picks on Crutchie the most. Morris is more emotional than Oscar. His parents abandoned him and Oscar.

Wiesel: He’s old and has grey hair. He’s older, disgruntled, and overweight. He uses the DeLancey brothers to scare the newsies. He’s a violent alcoholic and loves his money. He doesn’t care for his nephews (Oscar and Morris) one bit. He works at The World Distribution window and is the one selling the papers to the newsies. The newsies call him Weasel.

Mr. Snyder: Snyder is an old white man in power. He has grey, balding hair and eerie pale eyes. He has a larger build than most of the other adults. He is the crooked and sinister warden of The Refuge, a filthy juvenile reformatory prison. The conditions there are awful. The newsies call him Snyder the Spider. He hates kids, especially the newsies. Even more especially, he hates Jack Kelly most. He is a greedy, cruel, coward.

In 1899 the Manhattan Newsies started a strike when the prices they had to pay for newspapers raised. They were striking for fair pay. During the strike Crutchie got beaten and taken to The Refuge, an awful juvenile reformatory prison. The conditions there are horrendous. By the end of the strike they had gotten their way and Crutchie was freed. Jack Kelly got Governor Teddy Roosevelt to shut down The Refuge via his drawings from his time there as a kid that depict just how awful it is. Snyder also gets sent to jail.
