Members of the old money, WASP families are completely out of touch with the common American man, as the only other human beings they talk to are their fellow elites at cocktail parties and fundraisers for liberal cause célèbres where they virtue signal and clutch pearls over the indolence and licentiousness of the unwashed masses. Many of them will brag about how their family members were allies of the Civil Rights movement, although most of them are less open about those same family members being champions of eugenics during the early 20th century. Some of them own separate compounds to keep the most feeble-minded members of their clan away from the eyes of society.

Living in the red-bricked tenement apartments of inner New Canterbury are the white working class of New Canterbury; loud-mouthed, Irish descended "tough guys" who are open bigots and commit vicious beatings on others over them not liking the right baseball team - most of New Canterbury's policemen, firefighters and EMTs are from this demographic. A majority of the businesses in the inner areas are in bed with the Irish Mob - a sizeable percentage of the income is donated to IRA terrorists across the Atlantic.

In the rural areas around the city are unkempt shacks owned by paranoid libertarian Swamp Yankees who take "Live Free or Die" literally. Some came here as part of a organized movement to turn the state into a libertarian utopia. Many of them act hostile towards the government, and believe in every conspiracy theory written and then some - they also attract scores of black bears due to their uncollected garbage.

New Canterbury is part of the New England "brain belt", and there are a dozen highly selective private liberal arts colleges in the town's radius, each one more performatively progressive than the last. Tuition at these colleges cost a small fortune, but the students pay it anyway as they want to look down on all the uneducated rubes who they don't want to be. Note: if you come from a legacy family, you can usually get in for free for just having a pulse.

There is currently a catastrophic heroin epidemic among the working class due to the decline of the textile industry. Overdoses occur every day, and bodies of passed out junkies litter areas around abandoned mills, railroads and other delicing industrial areas.

Wealthy families will often send their socially deficient and feeble minded family members to the "Lake Shockenwhippum Center", a "therapeutic" boarding school that that uses controversial behavioral modification techniques to stamp up any un-WASPlike non-proper manners.

New Canterburians are hardcore sports fans and often tend to riot when their favorite teams win.
