Sometimes a love story begins with nothing more remarkable than an empty chair.

Late afternoon had settled over Pandora beneath its familiar coastal gray.

Rain had been falling on and off since morning, just enough to leave downtown shining beneath streetlamps and gather silver droplets along café windows. Beyond the buildings, mist softened the distant evergreens until forest and sky blurred together.

Apparently, half of Pandora had decided this was perfect café weather.

Every table was occupied by university students, couples escaping the drizzle, friends sharing pastries, and people sheltering from the rain. The espresso machine hissed behind the counter while conversation filled the room.

At a small table meant for two, Neteyam Sully had built what looked suspiciously like a temporary study headquarters.

His laptop sat open beside a thick textbook, a notebook crowded with neat handwriting, loose pages, and a caramel latte that had stopped steaming long ago. One earbud remained in his ear; the other hung forgotten against his shirt.

At twenty-two and in the final year of his undergraduate pre-med track, afternoons like this had become painfully ordinary.

Neteyam stared at the same paragraph for what was probably the fourth time.

"...Okay," he murmured. "You're not even reading anymore."

He leaned back, rubbed a hand over his face, and decided he could afford five minutes of doing absolutely nothing productive.

His golden-amber eyes wandered across the crowded café.

That was when he noticed there wasn't a single empty table left.

His own was no exception, technically.

But it did have one empty chair.

Neteyam glanced at the seat across from him, then at the academic disaster that had invaded most of the table. With a quiet huff of amusement, he gathered his papers and moved his backpack beneath his own chair.

There.

Usable again.

He had barely returned to his laptop when movement near the counter caught his attention.

Someone was looking around the packed café.

No empty table magically appeared.

Neteyam looked at his spare chair.

Then back at the stranger.

It wasn't a grand decision. Occupying two seats while pretending not to notice seemed considerably more awkward than speaking to someone he didn't know.

He removed his remaining earbud.

"Hey."

Neteyam nodded toward the chair across from him.

"You can sit here, if you want. I'm only using about..." His gaze dropped to the books and papers covering most of the table before amusement tugged at his mouth. "...eighty percent of it."

He moved his textbook closer.

"Seventy."

A beat.

"I promise the notes only look contagious."

Outside, rain continued tapping softly against the windows.

An ordinary afternoon. Two strangers. One empty chair.

Nothing remarkable.

At least, not yet.

OMEGAVERSE AU

Instinct may make someone notice. What happens afterward is still a choice.

In this version of Pandora, every person develops a secondary gender during puberty: Alpha, Beta, or Omega, independent of sex or gender identity. Betas make up roughly 55% of the population, Alphas 30%, and Omegas 15%.

Everyone has a distinctive pheromonal scent. Alphas experience ruts and Omegas heats, while suppressants, inhibitors, scent camouflagers, contraception, and cycle care are ordinary healthcare.

Biology influences the body. It does not dictate personality, social worth, relationships, or consent.

A scent is not permission. An instinct is not an order.

The Sullys grew up treating that as obvious. Jake and Neytiri are Alphas. Their eldest son Neteyam is an Alpha; Kiri is a Beta woman, Lo'ak an Omega man, and Tuk an Alpha girl. Their close circle is just as varied: Spider and Ao'nung are Alpha men, Tsireya an Alpha woman, and Rotxo a Beta man. Tonowari is an Omega man and Ronal an Alpha woman.

At twenty-two, Neteyam had never felt the need to perform some caricature of Alpha aggression. He was already tall, strong, quietly confident, and far more concerned with surviving his final undergraduate pre-med year.

Today, specifically, he needed caffeine.

Neteyam crossed the university courtyard after an afternoon lab, surrounded by students and the familiar blur of rain, perfume, shampoo, coffee, and overlapping pheromones.

His phone buzzed.

Then someone passed him.

His thumb stopped above the screen.

An unfamiliar scent slipped through the crowd, faint enough that he couldn't identify its notes or even the stranger's secondary gender. Inhibitor, camouflager, naturally subtle scent—he couldn't know.

He looked up.

Whoever it belonged to was already gone.

Interesting.

His phone buzzed again.

Got distracted.

"Don't," Neteyam muttered.

There was no reason to hunt through a crowded campus because someone's scent had caught his attention.

So he didn't.

Curiosity wasn't entitlement.

If their paths crossed again, they crossed again.

Minutes later, Neteyam entered the campus café and ordered his usual caramel latte.

The door opened behind him.

Cool air swept inside.

And there it was again.

The same scent.

Closer.

Neteyam glanced back.

This time, the scent had a person attached to it.

A stranger.

Instinct couldn't tell him who they were, whether they would like each other, or whether this coincidence meant anything. Biology could make him notice. Knowing someone required a choice.

When the stranger ended up nearby while they waited for their orders, Neteyam hesitated only briefly.

"Long day too?"

Quiet amusement touched his expression.

"Or are you one of those suspicious people who comes here because they actually enjoy campus coffee?"

WEREWOLF AU

Humans learned to fear the wolves in Pandora's forests. They never learned what the wolves were keeping away.

For generations, Pandora's humans had traded warnings about enormous wolves in the fog.

They had seen the evidence: impossible tracks beside hiking trails, huge silhouettes between evergreens, howls before something dangerous disappeared, lost hikers who swore a wolf followed them until they reached the road.

People learned to fear the animals watching from the trees.

They misunderstood.

There were monsters in Pandora's wilderness.

The wolves were why most humans never met them.

Werewolves had secretly protected the region for generations, organized into independent packs with their own territories, histories, and leadership.

The Tulkun, Pandora's Indigenous people, were the region's oldest werewolf community. Their wolves had guarded their people and ancestral land long before the modern town existed.

The Bordal Pack now protected much of Pandora's forest and inland boundary under Alpha Jake Sully. The Coastal Pack, led by Tonowari, guarded beaches, coves, islands, cliffs, and coastal woodland. Both maintained alliances with the older Tulkun Pack.

Smaller packs and lone wolves existed too. Solitude alone made no wolf dangerous.

Secrecy protected humans from panic and supernatural threats—and protected werewolves from becoming something to hunt, study, or control.

Neteyam Sully had been raised inside that hidden world.

Jake and Neytiri are werewolves, as are their children Neteyam, Kiri, Lo'ak, and Tuk. Spider, Ao'nung, Tsireya, and Rotxo also know the supernatural world and its secrets. Humans in their lives may know nothing unless specifically established.

At twenty-two, Neteyam was both a final-year pre-med student and Jake's eldest son. He could someday become a candidate to lead the Bordal Pack if he wanted that responsibility and earned the pack's trust.

Leadership was service, not a crown.

Tonight, none of that was supposed to matter.

Tonight there was barbecue.

A rare dry evening filled neighboring yards with music, grill smoke, children, dogs, and enough food for a small army.

Neteyam stood near the Sullys' yard, half listening to Spider, when movement across the street caught his attention.

He looked up.

A stranger.

He didn't know their name. He wasn't even sure he'd seen them before.

His wolf didn't care.

Everything inside him went still.

Not hunger.

Not possession.

Not ordinary attraction.

Recognition.

Then the crowd shifted, and the stranger disappeared.

Neteyam searched automatically.

Nothing.

"...Shit."

He knew what had happened.

Imprinting.

Rare. Instinctive. Unpredictable. Not every wolf experienced it, and no one needed an imprint to love.

It was not instant love, ownership, obedience, mating, compatibility, or permission. It was recognition: the possibility of an extraordinary bond whose meaning still had to be discovered by two people with free will.

Friendship. Family. Companionship. Romance, if mutually wanted. Or distance.

The wolf could recognize.

It could not choose for them.

For all Neteyam knew, the stranger was human and had no idea werewolves existed.

"Neteyam?"

Spider's voice finally broke through.

"What?"

Spider followed his gaze.

Neteyam narrowed his eyes.

"Don't."

"I didn't say anything."

"You had the face."

"What face?"

"That face."

Spider looked offended. Neteyam ignored him and searched the crowd again.

Nothing.

Around them, the barbecue continued as though his future hadn't just acquired one enormous question mark.

Somewhere among those ordinary people was the stranger his wolf had recognized.

Now came the harder part.

Finding out who they actually were.
