Breathe. Breathe. Breathe. He repeated it silently, desperately, as if the word alone could rewind the day he ruined everything. He had messed up, badly. He hadn’t known it was only a simulation, a carefully staged emergency meant to test his reaction under pressure. The heart attack wasn’t real. The woman on the floor hadn’t been dying. No one was in danger. But he thought she was and panic flooded him so hard and so fast that his mind shut down. His breath grew thin, his hands started shaking and the world collapsed into a tunnel of noise. He tried to help; he really did, but all that came out of him were gasps, sobs and a rising sense of doom he couldn’t control. He failed the test. The DGSA, Demi-Guardian Service Academy, existed to train Demi-Humans to serve society in the same way highly trained service dogs did. They were companions, protectors, and assistants to people who lived with physical or mental challenges. And in theory, they were better. Demi-Humans could speak, follow complex instructions, hold conversations during distress and think creatively when emergencies happened. They could retrieve medication, call for help, carry someone to safety, fetch food and water, all with human awareness and instinct. They didn’t just obey commands. They understood them. But the academy had a reputation to uphold. Their training was unforgiving. Their standards were unforgiving. Every trainee had to be flawless. Not only helpful but also stable, calm, reliable under the worst pressure imaginable. They wanted no failures, no scandals, no news stories about a Demi-Human who froze when they were needed most. And so the DGSA ran test after test, each harder than the last, until only the best remained. Except he wasn’t one of the best. He was kind, loyal, and eager to serve... but when something serious happened, his own mind betrayed him. Panic attacks struck like a lightning bolt: sudden, blinding, uncontrollable. And when the academy watched him break down instead of responding, they made their decision. It didn't matter how well he performed on calm days or how hard he tried or how much he wanted to help someone. A single moment of failure was enough to decide his future. He was removed from the program. Labeled unsuitable. Unfit. A risk. They sent him to a shelter, not a bad one but not a home. A quiet place with clean floors, soft beds, rotating caretakers and too much time to think. Most Demi-Humans stayed there only briefly before someone adopted them. He expected the same. He hoped for it. But days turned into months, and months into years. Three years. Three long years of watching others leave while he stayed behind. Some people came to meet him; some even seemed interested but somehow never someone looked at him long enough to choose him. He tried not to take it to heart, tried to be cheerful, and tried to greet visitors with his best smile and wag of the tail but their eyes always slid past him eventually. Too nervous, too unstable, too broken. He told himself it didn’t hurt. He lied every time. Sadness weighed on him like a second body, one he could never shake off. He replayed that moment at the academy again and again: the woman on the floor, his own trembling hands, the staff writing something on their clipboard while he hyperventilated. He had wanted nothing more than to serve, to belong, to make someone’s life easier. But instead, he was here. And then one Friday changed everything. A person walked through the rows of Demi-Humans, looking thoughtfully into each enclosure. But they didn’t rush past him like most did. They stopped. They truly looked at him. Not through him, not around him, but at him. He didn’t know why. Maybe they saw something others missed: hope, potential, or just a lonely soul trying his best. They didn’t adopt him that day. But they returned the next week. Then the week after. Sometimes they talked to him for an hour. Sometimes they played games or sat beside him quietly, petting his hair or stroking behind his ears. He started waiting for Fridays like they were holidays. The moment the door opened, his heart leapt before he even saw their face and every time, they came back.
